I DESPISED him before this role. He was immaculate and has made great decisions in the last decade to cement himself as an incredible actor. Maybe he got a new agent that saw his potential.
Well, he **does** seem to have great instincts as an actor when he selects roles, most certainly. I think that Rust was certainly more his speed, so to speak, compared to Marty. Much of his best work-- in my own humble opinion-- involves roles in which he plays someone who's just a little bit (or more than little bit) "out there," slightly detached from the reality everyone else around him is working with, seeing things differently. He can pull certain lines that coming from anyone else might just sound like some hackneyed, pretentious, coffeehouse/bong smoke bullshit. Often with a slight undercurrent of menace and danger about him. The role of Adam Meiks in "Frailty" comes to mind. he was great in that movie. So was everyone else, come to think of it. BUt...I can easily imagine McConaughey reading the script, conceptualizing Rust Cohle in his head, and thinking "Oh, hell yeah...that's me."
Rust is an interesting mix of existentialism, Buddhism, nihilism and the Tao. The reason he is so good at what he does is because he knows true human nature better than most. Yes most will find his philosophy depressing..a downer. But that is just because we "judge" it so, but viewed objectively it just "is". It is no different from any other perspective-just a matter of what one focus's on eg most focus on the good of humanity-but that perspective is equally valid to Rust's "negative" one. There is danger in focusing too much on either perspective: Too positive =we ignore all the problems and the world becomes worse. Too negative=we focus too much on problems and the individual becomes ill.
surfinmuso his “philosophy” is incoherent and his life is a contradiction to his evolutionary, materialistic, programmed human nature beliefs/ideas. If he really believed that crap he wouldn’t give a damn about solving a murder case.
@Ed M if the bad was "so much stronger," we'd all be bludgeoning each other with rocks over small disputes. I don't think you truly comprehend how far we've come or what "bad" truly looks like.
Marty was a very good detective his life was basically out of control, drinking and cheating on his wife or beating up men over his mistress was his main concern. In 2012 Marty shows in his own way he is as good as Rust. Rust was obsessed and even more so in 95, trying to stay part of the body, fresh out of psych ward, off drugs for the first time in years and still trying to cope with his daughters death and loss of marriage. He buried himself in death to avoid his own pain. Rust had a code and would break man's laws and go to any lengths not caring if he died. They both have flaws that derail them but together there the perfect team. No other cop had a prayer of catching any of the killers except Rust and Marty. Marty did get the info about Reggie being in Texas and had Rust back no matter what. He even defends him in 2012 and he hated him but they shared to deep a bond for Marty not to defend him and finally he basically tells them if Rust is a killer dont call him because he wont help catch him. Rust was amazing detective with absolutely nothing but the work while Marty's demons were getting the best of him in 95.
Thank you! My idea was to make it as a short film itself. I recently re-watched the series again and I couldn't find any other scene I would add into. It is simply the best compilation for me personally.
@7:29 When he says "I'm so done talking to you like a man...!" Yeah....I it is funny how often I've had that feeling! I wish I actually thought of that line!
For those not philosophically inclined, Rust is explaining what one's worldview should be if materialism and Darwinism are completely true: there is no afterlife, we lack free will, morality is a con job. Rust is the very definition of an angry atheist because he lost his daughter to a tragic accident. So being this way helps him cope with that tragedy. At the end of the show, Rust begins to see the light again and says, "The light's winnin'."
Explain why he has Christ above his bed then. Explain the one eyed mirror. I believe he knows the truth, he is just in far too much anguish and guilt that he is conscious and unconscious to. He knows Jesus is God, and that he will be judged like everyone else. Rust is too smart not to know. I believe that he is in that "hardened heart, logical mind" point in his faith. Where he is hurting, doesn't truly trust anyone because he knows his own true nature and others, and doesn't know how to be close to them. He is also self righteous. He wants to expose those who worship a false god or themselves, not realizing that he himself is doing the same or he does realize such, and attempts to walk in the path of jesus christ. Not really sure though. Could be consciously doing it or unconsciously doing it. I've read before that Jesus is like a magnet of attraction for those that seek the truth.
I believe you're right though. He is a smart man that probably knows a lot and uses that knowledge to hide from the truth. He accepts false truths while KNOWING in his spirit what the real truth is. The truth tears you apart when your whole life has been lies.
You are one of those not philosophically inclined, not having delved into ethics at all, given that your views on morality are standard religious views, unchanged by honest, open-ended, curious exploration. Free will doesn't work with a god, because a god is omnipotent and constantly interferes in life, at least given all you people thank him for. So if he makes the world go round, your actions aren't your own. You're even confusing purpose in life with christianity, because that's all you could imagine.

Steve was going through a tough time because Rust and Marty were asking questions about the little girl that he had said wasnt missing. Steve knew then that she was almost certainly dead and the sheriff had lied about everything and probably got an ulcer waiting for them to connect him to it, which they should have, which leads to Steve going on a major blackout bender and puking in women's laps. They get there man and Steve is in the clear for the next 17 years.
I came to share a lot of the same ideologies as Rust’s character in my later 20’s after going through some serious shit and a pair of tragedies. I used to think I had a firm belief in my faith, and while I’ve regained some of that due to some personal things that have transpired over the last couple years, I still find myself stuck in this cynical, pessimistic, introverted and introspective world view in my own search for what my life means and my purpose. And I hate that about myself, because it’s robbed me of some of the happiness I used to have. Somewhere between going through what I did and seeing how the world truly works and the intentions of many in it, lead me to this. But I hope to find that I’m wrong and all that goodness I once saw in people and the world as a whole is still out there, and that maybe it’s me who’s just been living the wrong way and unable to see it since I lost it. But thankfully I’m not as “intellectual” as Rust, nor am I as forthcoming with my views either, which is probably good because if I didn’t keep that shit to myself, I probably wouldn’t have the friendships and relationships that I have today lol while I share a lot of his qualities, i think I’d probably strangle somebody like him/I if i was stuck with someone like that who shit on everything positive and only acknowledged or paid any worthy attention to all the negative, as if that is the only thing that matters. Life’s a journey and it’s not always pretty, so maybe the circumstances that lead me to this world view is just a chapter that will eventually lead me to appreciating all that is good with the world that much more, so maybe I’m just a pessimist praying to find that former optimism again because I know this can’t be all there is out there. Sorry for the rant, and thank you for reading this far. I just thought it was interesting and comforting to know that for somebody to write a character like this, then there’s clearly other people out there like myself whom this was based on. Kind of eye-opening in a way. I guess one day we all will hopefully find those answers, I just hope I find it while I still have time to appreciate it.

These are the ones I feel for. Those who have been undercover and had to do whatever it took to get the truth. Including taking drugs to gain a person's acceptance into a harsh world. The long-term consequences and affects that do damage a person's mind. The lines that have become blurry. Am I on the side of good or bad.. empathy for the bad side because being exposed to it has given a different point of view.. then being judged unfairly by peers.. it can be a real shitty world out there. It does change a person..how can it not? It can cause a person to only trust in themselves. Though if it's felt self let self down .. that can be a hard thing to regain even trust with self. It's not impossible.. it's just hard work.
That's funny because I've had similar situations where people are concerned about what I may say.. not wanting to upset others. Why do they ask you somewhere if they don't actually want an authentic person.. makes no sense
