If I had spent as much time just rewatching season 1 of True Detective as I have watching random, out of order clips of it on youtube, I could have watched the entire season again by now.
Alchemy Phoenix ditto and same with td s2
Going by this theory I've rewatched The Sopranos 50 times over then
Dude I know exactly what you mean lmao
And again, and again.., and again.
Alchemy Phoenix I’ve done both.
“Most of the last decade I’ve spent stone drunk. Functional, but hammered.”
Idk exactly why, but I love that line.
That's exactly what Rust is. He hates himself and drinks to medicate his self hatred, but still disciplined enough to know he needs to stick around and be functional to see the job through. He never forgot the debt he still needed to pay and he wasn't going to waste away without paying it.
Functional alcoholism. Many people, including myself, suffer from it. They say alcoholics are actually extremely intelligent people. Stay frosty.
That Rust could limit himself to only getting hammered is awe inspiring. Had my eyes seen half of what his have and my ears heard and heart been crushed by death, corruption, loneliness, betrayal and futility I would strip down and climb in a bathtub of Ladeaux Brew of every intoxicant known to western culture and use every pore, vein and orifice to get those intoxicants on the inside of my body.
@@stephendouglas4343 ain't nothing wrong with it. Keep on keeping on!
@@michaeljmobleyur wrong….Rust doesn’t hate himself he knows who he is and he even says “I can’t say the job made me this way, more like me being this way made me right for the job….i used to think about it more but uh, u reach a certain age u know who u r…..now I live in a little room out in the country behind a bar…..work 4 nights a week in between I drink……and there ain’t no one there to stop me. I know who I am….and after all these years there’s a victory in that”

Those 2-3 years were unbelievable. Suddenly TV just exploded . Breaking Bad,True detective,Sherlock,House of Cards,Game of Thrones,Peaky Blinders ,Fargo. All of the leads were movie stars and all of them gave distinctive powerful performances. Not only that all of those had an actual plot which seems to be missing in current time.
That's art for you, just be glad you got to experience it
Bkoz its start new era of TV-shows, new, modern era of mastering talking stories and entertain peoples.
And TD S1 is manifest-atoin THING of it's new era.
Although it wasn't this tv-show that started this era.
And that era of TV was kick started by the sopranos
And now we got garbage like Rings of Power getting a 2nd season. lol
It was great, then the left turned the entertainment industry into woke DEI shit and started pushing politics everywhere. I miss the good old days.
Best mini series of all time
+Aidan DePaul Shitty? It's far from shitty. We knew it was not going to be better than Season 1. I accepted it for what it is and I enjoyed it very much.
+Aidan DePaul yeah shithead season 2 was fine, but they should've stuck with one director the whole season.
I thought season 2 was damn good. Heard later it was rushed- got a different director- you know once money rears its ugly head over art and time. They certainly had a lot more time to produce season 1...
being as they didn't know what they had and that it was going to be such a hit. Can't blame the actors in season 2- they were really good and all look they did their best with what they had.
It was compelling enough.
compared to season 1 ....it IS complete and utter shit....that being said it was enjoyable and colin Farrell was the man
band of brothers
This scene embodies the spirit of the show, to me. When the opportunity to just walk away comes up, something calls you to stay. Call it honor, duty, loyalty, or something else entirely - it drives you. A True Detective.
I thought the same thing. The fact these two didn't give up on a case even when they weren't on the force anymore is the definition of a "true detective"
Very well said.
“So what, we’re supposed to be some sort of, True-Detective-Squad?”
Very well said
Beautifully articulated
nah... Rust had leverage on Marty because of the truth of how things went down in 95; Marty fucked it up and Rust saved his ass. It's a subtle threat to have the truth exposed if not helped. It is not until Marty watches the film that he realizes what he already knew deep down; that Rust was right all along and that there was much more to the case than Ledoux. After that he willingly takes on the case.... and he eventually cracks it.
I watch the sopranos when I want to eat I watch true detective when I want to drink.
Hahahah
Now THAT is a succinct and accurate observation. I concur. Well done, sir. :-)
Good stuff
And peaky blinders when u want to smoke tf outta ur lungs
I think you end up drinking just to get through the show without losing your mind or being traumatized once you realize these horrors are very very real.
When Rust says that Marty has debt, you can tell Marty knows exactly what Rust is talking about. He just doesn't want to jump back into that dark hole again, but he knows he needs to.
That’s the best part of this scene. Even if the darkest, most serious scenes of this show, there’s still that subtle pitch black dark comedy. Rust drops that blackmail on Marty cuz Rust knows that’s the only way that will get Marty to hear him out. And Marty knows that’s the only way he’ll be convinced to stay. The difference between them is that Rust never forgot and never CAN forget; Marty, however, lives in blissful ignorance. Rust crushes Marty’s reality by reminding him of the past.
@@fullofcrapiamand one of many things I love about the end of the season is that both characters seem to, at least to some extent dispell with the worst parts of their own personalities and adopt the best of the other. Rust realizes that existence may actually have a meaning, that light winning against the darkness is something to be optimistic about. Maybe he'll be able to live without constantly dwelling in that abyss of all the horrors of the world and his own life. And Marty, isn't so blissfully ignorant anymore. He's a lot more open to facing reality and not pretending to be some good guy.
"If you were drowning, I'd throw you a fucking barbell."
Jesus...
"you're eyes seem kinda brittle" mirrors what dewall said to rust in that bar years back
"Father time has his way with us all. Looks like you must've pissed him off." That line kills me!
+Salomon Villamonte
I'm not a bro, I'm a chick! LOL! :) And he actually does say "Father Time," he just says it really quickly.
+Salomon Villamonte
It's okay, Boo! :D
"Time rots everything, Booker."
sorry what's the meaning of this sentence? is it from some kind of story?
SiuKar628 It's in the scene. About the passing of time.
The intelligence that is shown in the writing and story telling of this show is outstanding.
95 - Rust and Marty go to a bar after Marty’s infidelity is discovered. Marty wants to talk to Rust about it but Rust doesn’t want to hear at. Rust convinces Marty to go and see what he has to show him ‘you’re going to love this jacket I’ve got’
Marty blames Rust for the breakdown of his marriage ‘this is part on you, creating tensions’ Rust stays obsessed with the job.
2012 - Rust and Marty meet and go to a bar.
The location may be different but the environment is the same, the conversation is the same. The only real difference this time is that in 95 Marty desperately wanted to talk to Rust. In 2012 he’s the last person he wants to see. The conversation is still the same, Rust obsessed about the job, Marty blaming Rust for his marriage breaking down, leading to Marty going with Rust to ‘see what he’s got.’
The time is a flat circle concept runs so deep in this story sometimes it’s right in front of us but it’s not seen.
I could talk for hours about this show. Marty thinks he’s a people person, this unavoidable Adonis who people want to be around, yet who’s the person at the bar with him in 95, who’s house does he stay at in 95? Marty loses people as the show goes on ending up alone. Rust saves him from the inevitable outcome of the detectives common fate, too much time, idle hands, drinking, loneliness, suicide.
Well written

Superb acting on both parts. I have rewatched the series probably 5 times, watch clips on here and it still blows me away.
Wendy Sullivan possibly the greatest single season of any show ever.
Rust is one of those characters that you would go to hell and back for and also that one dude to have your back hands down no questions asked.
"I dont dwell on the past.."
".. Well that must be nice."
That look Rust gives him is perfect, Marty can be so god damn condescending
Marty can be condescending, in comparison to Rust?? Lmao. Rust is one of the most condescending characters I've ever seen on television.
Yeah, but he has a “big ass dick.”
algo but rust is a genius. Marty is condescending and childish and stupid at times.

Terrence Aybar those five words brought me here after a year after watching the episode, i remembered it and had to find it , such a powerful scene symbolizing the weight of how deep the shit they are in and how they have to come together now to get through carcosa and get through it
You've got some fuckin sac
Your typical reunited-lovers-running-thru-the-pounding-surf-into-each-other's-arms scene.
Despite all the shit they went through, Marty knows he’s innocent. Love it
Best show in TV history, still going strong.
0:43 ...Woody was EQUALLY good in this series and had the HARDER role of the two in my opinion as sometimes playin the Straight Man/Normal One of a given "Dynamic Duo" isnt so easy as it seems. At that :43 mark there's an uncomfortable short silence and he wipes away imaginary dust on an already clean table..somethin similar we ALL do if in similar spots. Woody will get his Golden Statue one day GUARANTEED.
He's not normal, he cheats on his wife and can't control his anger and has serious issues being suppressed. That makes it the more complex role.
100% agreed. As a character, Rust was inherently more interesting. However, that does not mean McConaughey was the better actor here (not saying he wasn't great). Harrelson's character was more complex. A lot of layers. Had to walk that tightrope between straight-laced family man, drunken loser, under-performing detective... his full of shit facade about how he acted like he was a better man than Rust. While being a complete hypocrite. Then, also somehow managing to show you that he had a good heart when push really came to shove. Harrelson was phenomenal.
Without Harrelson, I don't think Matthew would have done a better job. It takes a certain type of chemistry that only two actors that immensely respect each other have in order to make there roles mean something.
actually there is stuff all over the table, but I agree WH is amazing and one of my favorite actors along with MM. Having them both together, man this season was just too perfect. It ruined all other shows for me in a way.
1 Bad Jesus Two power houses of talent and woody did great as always , i agree heavily
This fuckin show, I swear, I've watched the whole thing 6 times, and I'd STILL rather watch it a 7th, over any of the schlop currently being shown.

Absolute masterpiece.
And you will watch it again and again. Because time is a flat circle...
@@Soogen_Govender omg, are you the Yellow King?
@@daweller no sir. I know nothing about no golden king or yellow king. Im just your friendly neighbor who cuts grass...
Just finished watching season one, a truly outstanding work.
I
You can watch and listen to this dialogue a thousand times and you never get tired. Episode 7 is for me the best in the whole series. Wonderful acting from both of them. Woody Harrelson is a hell of an actor, so is Matthew in his forties. The chemistry between them is amazing. Being long time friends in real life helped a lot to build this wonderful cinema monument called True Detective Season 1. Pizzolatto and Fukunawa won't approach ever to such a miracle. Almost flawless, almost perfect (excepting episode 8 maybe, ruining all the mistery from the start.)
Episode 8 was amazing, what are you on about?
I love the subtext of the ending of this encounter. Marty tries one last time to intimidate Rust by getting in his face, because if Rust cracks, shows one sign of fear, weakness or hesitation, then his character and therefor his accusation is broken. If you can discredit the man, you can discredit what he's saying and walk away. But by standing strong, not backing down, not showing fear, keeping eye contact, basically having an unshakable rock solid frame, Marty can't ignore what Rust is saying and has to face what he knows deep down inside, Rust was right, they DID have unfinished business. Such a masterful scene.
There’s a very touching moment in this scene: Marty explicitly says he knows that Rust is innocent, despite being given evidence to the contrary. Despite the hatred and resentment they had for each other for so long, they were truly best friends and knew each other to the core because Marty never believed for a second that Rust was the killer, and Rust knew that Marty knew that and so he didn’t hesitate to talk to him and share everything with him. Yes, the debt they both owed tied them together. But it was true friendship that brought them back together.
Woody's expression with the instrumental when Rust says he has a debt... Goosebumps every time
I love that Rust kept the debt that Marty owes him for 17 years for when he knew he'd actually need something
A man remembers his debts.....
and the tax man collects...
“Because you have a debt....”
That’s how you get people to do what you want. Don’t appeal to their mercy by pleading with them. Appeal to their self-interests instead. Which in this case was Rust’s ability to convince Marty that he can’t live with himself if he doesn’t help fix what was left undone.
This was something more.
Nah, Rust wasn't trying to manipulate Marty. Marty killed Ledoux and this allowed the real killer to continue killing children, even 17 years later. What Rust said was true, Marty had a debt and they needed to solve the case together.
Ladeaux deserved to die that was justice. They don't know that Marty killing him changed anything but they might have got something out of him even inadvertently as he was high as kite and doing plenty of talking but not making too much sense( Rust learned how most people feel when he's talking) but the hints were there the "king sees you he sees you" etc. That there were others unaccounted for. Bottom line though is they were tasked with bringing Dora Langes killer to justice and in that one Reggie and Dewald were just accomplices and not the killer. Rust staged the scene to cover for Marty and they were partners so they both have a debt. Rust feels that the clues were there and even with Reggie dead they should've kept looking especially for other unsolveds and like he said the murder didn't take place there but nobody was in a hurry to bring that up. The only thing tying Reggie to Dora was Charlie and the meth/lsd as well as the sculptures but no physical evidence tied him or Dewald to her nor her to there torture shack. They were messy even though they were careful it stood to reason something would be there and there wasnt. They didn't get there man though they got some sick puppies. Reggie screened Errol so to speak and he did it twice when Rust was talking to Errol and Marty got the info back and honked had that not have happened it looked as if Rust was possibly about to go deeper like "you got keys to this school how about you show me around" he would have noticed the scars and how tall he was but Reggie Ladeaux and then catching him with the kids put heat on Reggie and saved Errol to kill another day.
Rust and Marty would be close friends forever. The bond and experiences they shared is unbreakable.
It takes Rust the whole scene to convince Marty that this isn't about his little marital drama.
like always, its the same as the last bar scene, "i dont wanna hear about it"
Rust looks kinda heartbroken when Marty said he’d throw him a barbell. Rust probably made his peace with the entire situation and completely empathized with Marty years ago. It was a look of pure disappointment to see Marty (the closest thing he’s ever had to a friend and someone to relate to) be so selfish and small minded that after all this time he still couldn’t or wouldn’t care to see how Rust’s life was completely ruined by the exact same event. One that Marty 99% created. Now in his time of need, with nothing and nobody else to help while he sacrifices what little he has left to try to do the absolute right thing, he has to resort to guilt tripping him.

Should have stopped after this season. They made what I believe was masterpiece. There was no reason to try and duplicate it.
Agreed, season 1 is absolutely special. But I must say season 3 was excellent as well!
The way I see it season 2 didn’t try to emulate season 1 at all, and that was why it got so much hate. If anything season 3 tried harder to duplicate season 1, and that’s why I respect season 2 a lot more than I used to. Give it a rewatch, it’s actually not that bad once you stop trying to see season 1 in it.
It is a Masterpiece. Nothing can match it.
@@caesarplaysgames Season 2 had it's moments I agree with that. Only saw the first episode of season 3. So I can not judge it.
@@caesarplaysgames that's what i said, season 2 had a whole different story and had really awesome moments. Ray was my favorite character, and you felt for him. Season 3 try so hard and it was just boring, It was like a clone of season 1 except Rust is black and he is trying to solve an old case. They had build up just to end it with a crappy ending
The layers in this show are remarkable. I keep reading numerous RUclips comments to see the varying analyses, lol! One other element of influence in True Detective is the Ciudad Juárez feminicides. They went back to the mid 80’s and really entered Spanish speaking media in the 90’s, eventually becoming mainstream news by the 2000’s. Ciudad Juárez murders were said to involve multiple actors: city/state government, legal authorities, maquiladoras (mostly owned by transnational corporations), federal government, and everyone in between. In the end nothing was really resolved in Mexico and hundreds of women lost their lives. I like the little allusion to this when Rust mentions the “meth for the maquilladores” when he’s talking to Ginger. So many influences that led to such an amazing show.
Best tv show for ages full stop.
Season 1 yes
So true
I rewatch S1 about once a year ever since I first saw it 5+ years ago. I’m now almost 23 and for me one of the biggest themes of the show that resonates most is the commentary around “closure” and perseverance. The carcosa case intertwined so intimately with practically every aspect of rust and Marty’s personal and professional lives, and it’s clear that them taking the leap to go back into that dark place was a last ditch effort to reclaim some of what they lost during the years they worked together. Despite the dark and lonely paths their lives took it feels like that by catching the killer it made all that pain somewhat (if very little) worth it. It’s well known how profound season 1’s exploration of morality and human wickedness is, but I really appreciate how it demonstrated human perseverance too. It doesn’t take much for these two embittered individuals to put aside resentment and unfinished business that simmered for over a decade to do the right thing, and I really find comfort in that.
Solid analysis!
Shows like this and mad men are a nightmare when you're quitting smoking lol

I realized that the saddest thing about life in our modern culture is that I feel exactly like Rust about nearly everything, yet have no personal tragedies on which to blame my nihilism. Its just what comes from living in this soulless society while still having a moral and ethical standard for your own actions.
This conversation and the mention of Alaska ties into Season 4 episode 2 possibly.
