      He just tapped him with the tool box which appeared to be empty.

    • @BigMac8000
      @BigMac8000 4 года назад +24

      @@dbodooley You can hear it's empty, and made out of tin or aluminum. A glancing blow might cut, but not kill. It's rectangular, it'll be spin when met with an object. You can see it fly, and he didn't swing it like a hammer down. A square box against a round skull isn't going to be that bad. Rust adjusted when he picked it up, which you can see it didn't have any heft, so he went for a glance.
      A full toolbox would also come at you much, much slower.
      We all think of toolbox's being maxed out, because that's how it usually is, but in a shop half the time they splay the tools out, which Rust notes on the way in. He stands right in front of it checking it out, sizing up the room. He likely meant to either bash or throw the toolbox at the "weaker" dude who would likely go down, stay down, and not fight the situation so he arm-lock the other guy. Just tossing that toolbox into someone's chest, if full, would likely put them on the floor but not so bad they couldn't mitigate the crazy damage of it knocking them over -- a pop-up during the throw would make it better, because again, hitting your head on pavement and knocking your teeth out is possible as well as concussions.
      In normal cases you'd be technically right - if dropped down on you, you're in serious trouble.
      But you wouldn't be able to swing a set of tools like that, the lid might likely pop as it inverts (due to the sudden up-down-up of the tools inside). Even if it was full, the weight wouldn't be balanced, you'd hit with the box, THEN the tools would fly to the end on the other side, making a double tap, unless they were secured. If you angled down of course, all that would be solved and bam, you're dead.
      Not to diminish your point, a toolbox is HEAVY normally, you could definitely kill someone with one.
      A smaller toolbox that's more secured would be super dangerous. A cop in a situation like this wouldn't risk blunt-force trauma, that's a lawsuit waiting to happen, even in the 80's - 90's.... and an obfuscation of the case. Rust wouldn't risk that.
      Definitely worth noting these details, alongside the fact that a head-injury from a cop is full of character to be mined about Rust, I'm just adding not trying to be contrarian.

    • @BigMac8000
      @BigMac8000 4 года назад +15

      @anon e muss When you're cheating you're often moving fast, and feeling guilty --- can't sneak a shower in if it doesn't fit your cover story. Also this was a different time, washing your hands was laughable back then. Even if you wash your hands, too, it kinda lingers honestly, unless you really wash with great intention. This isn't so much a testament to sanitation, but to the strength of your nose. I don't think it's sexual, people make jokes, but really it's more "curiousity" than anything else. Y'know when you smell something awful in life and you just desperately want to tell someone to come over and smell something, and to your surprise they do despite FULL WELL knowing it's terrible? It's just a weirdly strong human compulsion.
      It's one of those weird oddities of living.

    I love how the first 3 episodes slowly reveal Rust Cohle is a bad man, then shows just how true a badass, how far he will go, with ep.4, "who goes there" imo might be the best overall episode with its themes of identity and Marty being outed for his affair and double life while we see Cohle fully for the first time, in a sense Crash was his true identity and Rust Cohle of Louisians State Police a disguise, when he came out of the psych ward it's like he buried his old self and all the hurt and tragedy that went with it to go somewhere noone knew him, they wouldnt be able to find out much, and he could completely immerse himself in the work, but you cant hide from yourself for long.

  • @jimmy2k4o
    @jimmy2k4o 3 года назад +113

    I love how Marty tries to tell the story as accurately as possible without ratting on Cohle.
    “He had a nose for weakness”
    Is better than “he suspected these two mechanics were lying so he beat the shit out of them until they gave up the location of the bunny ranch.”
    Even if it’s 17 years later and Marty nor Rust are even cops anymore.
    Rust is even surprised that Marty didn’t tell the Detectives about his drug flashbacks and hallucinations.
    After Reggie Ledoux........., I bet Rust could even screw Marty’s wife and Marty still wouldn’t rat on him.

    • @jimmy2k4o
      @jimmy2k4o 10 месяцев назад +2

      @@Firespectrum122 I think when he told the detectives about it, he was surprised he had too or they acted surprised about it.
      I can’t recall the exact thing that gave me that impression, I could be wrong.
      But I still think that Marty wouldn’t rat on Rust about anything, probably because they’re partners and especially because Rust immediately started covering for Marty after Marty killed Reggie. Even including murdering Reggie’s partner because he was a witness, all without knowing why Marty did it, he just trusted it must have been a good reason.
      Both Marty and rust saw each other break the law multiple times. Even if they hate each other, it endangers themselves to bring attention to their conduct. Also if one rats, the other probably will. So it’s mutually assured destruction.

    This is a great show..perhaps the best series I ever watched (along with Chernobyl). But see? According to European double standards it is ok to use violence (blunt force trauma) against men....imagine if he had to do this to women? Oh the double-standards. And btw good job on allowing transfolk into girls' toilets. Well done, US.

      The plot in this show is as clearly cut a patriarchaic system as it gets. You might want to learn about the tolerance paradox according to Karl Popper, to understand what you perceive as "double standards" regarding power (and thereby ultimately physical violence). Compromised, supposed "double" standards still beats having no standards whatsoever by a lot.
      Oh and about your last remark: If a man wants to enter a women's toilet to se*ually assault someone, well, he could just do that anyways. Why the hell would he jump through all those hoops like psychological assessments, months of hormone therapy, possibly even plastic surgery... when he could just walk in there? Where the fuck do you live that you have to show your genitals before being let into a public bathroom? Piss off with the trans / queer hatred you ignorant shitheel.

    This was my least favorite scene in the entire series. I felt it was so out of character for Russ. It completely clashed with the strong intellectual narrative the show had created. IDK I guess to me it would have been cooler if he could have used his wit to grab the info rather than force

    • @ChrisBrown-ir6sf
      @ChrisBrown-ir6sf 4 года назад +5

      A intelligent guy doesn't means his is all talk and no action. The beating was necessary to get the location quickly as they certainly can't afford to waste time. Also it would've boring to watch Rust is playing games with 2 random for some whorehouse. He realized they knew the location and he figured out how to get it fast from their mouth. It was best move and smart.

      You didnt watch or get the show well enough.
      Rust is a realist.
      He saw the reality of them lying to him, avoiding eye contact. Short concise answers. Insincere apologies.
      He read that shit and approached it differently.
      Its like the famous line in this show from Rust himself.
      "The world needs bad men. We keep the other bad men from the door".
      As a realist, you accept the bad decisions you have to make to try and prevent the bad decisions of someone worse from succeeding.

    • @jefflockaby702

      The reason for this scene is Marty's narration that Rust had about a good an eye for weakness as anybody he'd ever met....in their world, a cop's eye for that & the interview skills to get confesssions are HIGHLY prized...which is very realistic...good Detectives know only three things result in a guilty verdict
      1) physical evidence
      2) an eyewitness
      3) or a confession
      & good Detectives know that without 1 or 2..the only thing left is sharp interview skills..reading someone & getting into their heads... that gets confessions..just like Rust
