As a previous owner of a 2014 Disco 4 SDV6 from new, I was really unconvinced when this new model was released. But it’s really grown on me and your assessment is absolutely spot on. It now genuinely out rivals the large German luxury SUV’s and offers Range Rover level quality & refinement. For the same price as the base European rivals, basically everything is included even on the SE model. And it has proper off road capability that the others simply don’t offer. So a far better proposition in my view. If off roading isn’t a priority then the new Volvo XC90 is also a cooler and financially smart alternative to the German rivals.

I think they look awesome. The interior is mint and I could not care less about the offset number plate as you can't see it when you are driving. There is a few people who can do a numberplate conversion to centre it. I would have one over the German equivalent for sure.
Because I live in a quiet place, I've only seen one. Its certainly a commanding vehicle ...but light years away from the defender ethos of bolt on a another bit or fix it yourself. I think LR may have to make another new model for the utility market. There is a bit of a gap there for a much cheaper, much less complex off road vehicle
greatly I'd say. Disco numbers have tumbled since the (2020) Defender line was released. In fact I've heard since some of the parts are shared between the two, Defender's get priority as they are simply in higher demand. (I have a '22 Discovery 5 and happy not to have the "cargo space challenged" Defender 110 with that annoying swing-gate which I considered ;)) good to hear that JLR recently announced the Disco will continue in some form, there is a market for it.
Had ours since 2020 - we absolutely love it. We tour with our caravan and it might just be the perfect towing car. With 3 kids and a dog, we never feel short on space, even on a 3 week caravan trip. Personally I find it a joy to drive, even towing a near 8 meter caravan. I also like the look of it, we have the HSE luxury with black pack, and 22" black matt alloys and I think t looks the biz, I admit the vanilla low spec models do look a bit dull.
I recently bought a 4' after loving my 3. The styling is growing on me with the new one and I'm glad it has the various nods to previous models. Never forget where you're from. :)
As a Disco 5 owner, this is a fair review. It’s a bit ugly at the back but apart from that it’s comfy, capable and straight-line quick. Corners not so much, it’s much better driven wafty. Oh and completely reliable in two-plus years of ownership.
I had a mark 1 disco, with 3 doors. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it proved to be a excellent family wagon, when the kids were little. We had great fun camping and towing things. It wasn't too bad for reliability either and fairly cheap to fix. Rust was the biggest issue in the end. These newer ones are not going to make good cheap runners though, in a few years. Too complex.
I have had a D4 for 6 years now and it has been a pleasure to own, only issue I had was MAS air flow filter which I took out and cleaned myself , problem solved. I am now looking at an 19 plate D5 and must admit on the test drive it handled really well, Thanks for the review Matt was very helpful
My neighbours are in a line of work that sees them towing heavy trailers through all sorts of rough terrain and muddy fields. They have Hilux, Discos, RR and RR Sport. They say that the Discos are the best in all-conditions.
I have had a succession of large 4x4s as my wife is disabled and have to carry a disabled buggy , dog cage and lots of luggage as we always holiday in the UK. I don't need 7 seats. I started with two Isuzu Troupers ( Superb quality and one light bulb change) , Merc ML (badly designed and not good quality) Audi Q7 (old model , great car but eat tyres) then a Disco4 which was faultless , not an issue at all and good for the tyres. New Discovery had come out so did I buy one? No, I drove it and felt the driving experience in my 4 year old Disco 4 with 60k on the clock was better . The new car looked like a jelly mould that was top heavy and the boot was not as good as the Disco4. It had shrunk. So I went back to the new model Q7 with the uprated engine. As a drivers car and quality simply superb and no issues at all. The tyre issue had been sorted on the new car. I am due to change and really liked the look of the Defender as this looked like a proper replacement for the Disco4 to find its boot is far too small for me. Oh I also had tested the Range Rover and RR Sport and the boots were too small. So I may have to go to a Volvo XC90 to have something different or hope the LWB version of the Defender may have sorted my boot size issue. So sorry your review may love the latest Disco but its not for me for practical reasons and its looks.
Matt, you should get a gift of some sort from Land Rover for this glowing (and genuinely fabulous) review of their much improved car! Keep up the great work! Car variation on this channel keeps me yearning for more reviews (from older classics to modern whips!!)
I owned a D2, currently have a D3 and D4. I like the look of the new discovery, I also like the look of the new Explorer. I can't tell the difference in the 2 and don't have any desire to pay the Rover tax until this changes.
Love the interior on these, but don't like the heaviness of the styling from the D pillar back. Interesting that you mention not to look at this as a Discovery, as I think that's why they have sold less of these than its predecessor. People don't see it as a Disco anymore. I think that slot is now taken by the Discovery Sport which is also a seven seater albeit an occasional one.
My first disco was 1994, another in 1998, 2003 and 2006, loved them until 2006 model. You are right it was a far nicer car to drive, more refined, but it was just to far from a rough tough car I need. I moved down to defenders then, bought two new in 2010 and another two in 2016, my last of them as well, great cars even if the hand brake dug into your leg. But unfortunately Land Rover has moved right away from what I require, you see old Land Rover were for every day bush work, you and Land Rover talk about real off road ability, but you are talking about driving off road as a one off for a bit of fun. When you live and work in rough country, your car does far more dirt road with corrugated miles than bituminised tarmac, Land Rover no longer builds anything for that. I have now bought an Isuzu d-max and mix, not as good as my old rovers, but at least basic with no electronic wizardry for the dust to infiltrate and go hay wire, plastic bits to fall off underneath. As to Land Rover reliability I always found most people who talked about it never owned a new Land Rover, they had bought a 10 year old one with 250,000 kms on it and had no end of trouble with it, then when they bought their new Toyota it was much more reliable. Sad for not been able to buy Land Rover cars now, I loved them, don’t blame Land Rover really, we who actually need a bush car are a niche market I know, the 4wd poser market if far larger and more lucrative, I just wish with defender they could have stayed true to the brand and kept at least one rough tough truck for us to buy.
Frankly relieved by the comments and the video having just traded in my 2016 100k disco 4 landmark plus £38k for a 2021 Disco 5 R Dynamique with just 10k (yep!) on the clock. I really don't like the exterior styling, the 4 still is the best shape in my view and I found the offset rear plate hateful but, I can't see them from the luxury driving position and when you need or want 7 adult seats, I've not seen anything come near it.
I like this new 'Disco 5' It is modern in terms of tech and mechanicals, and I like the styling a lot. I do still like the Disco 4 too though, they do look more robust than the 5 I think.
crankshaft issues are putting me off from disco 4 and disco 3, if those issues never existed I think Disco 4 would be the best Land Rover ever(Personal view!)
Hello Matt , superb video . Where are you filming these ?! Stunning scenery again ! The mk 3 and 4 have an ageless , iconic design that the mk 5 doesn’t. Not helped by the discovery sport , which came out first , has exactly the same design, just shrunk in the wash ! Very smart though and rubs shoulders with the Range Rover, indeed . Tempted ?! 😂👍
The new landrovers/Rangerovers are stylish cars, but the elephant in the room is reliability. This company needs to follow in the footsteps of Lexus and build into their vehicles reliability and good customer service. With the high cost of these vehicles, surely customers deserve the aforementioned.
Love undying loyalty to JLR Matt. They should hire you as the Global Marketing Director. Couldn't help having a chuckle when you said the 2.0 engine may not be reliable at 100000 miles. Thanks for another great post.
Im upgrading my Discovery sport to a Disco 5 turbo diesel, used of course. Never had major issues with my discovery sport since I got it new, only thing was a turbo assembly replacement after 100k km. With this one it has more bells and whistles to go wrong and it will be a average milage used. But I plan to get a certified used from LR lot and extend the warranty. I get worried about reliability but Im confident it wont be extremely expensive to maintain like a Range Rover. I do take these cars offroad for camping with the family and sometimes tow rental trailers in Canada, so this car fits the bill.
Hi Mat, I had years ago the first model disco on a J plate V8 and loved it, i dragged our club dive boat around the country and even to Scotland well scapa flow actually on 2 occasions and never a problem. i am sure this new version is worlds away from that.
I have one and it is great. Silly comment about a farmer paying £80K for one; as a workhorse you would buy the commercial version for about £50K or a Defender
Looks very nice, but if I were buying one I would go for the Petrol version, either the Si6 or P250. Those SDV6 engines like to snap cracks randomly, just like in the Disco 4's. Also you can buy a conversion kit to centre the rear number plate, deffo a must buy !
But, the reg centring kit means you have to cut part of the boot. Kinda put me off getting one, although I did think I’d do this until I noticed the butchering you have to do!
Whenever I see one from the front or side I love the look of it. When I am following one I think it is the most confused design ever. Enjoyed the review.
My brother has one , he’s had no end of problems the worst was the windscreen fell out and the inside filled up with water as there was no seal around the windscreen, three things broke from when he picked it up to getting it home on his very first day , a lovely car to drive but it’s not reliable he can’t wait to get rid of it , just don’t buy one
I work for a JLR dealership. I have to fill out the warranty paperwork and return the parts on a daily basis, and I don’t mean bits and pieces, but 4, 5, 6, roller cages a day. Nice cars to drive when they work but I wouldn’t buy one. I don’t drive off road and many Land Rover owners don’t. I own and daily drive a Lexus RX450h. Nice comfy car to drive, outdated tech but it works, ugly to look at but it is totally reliable, driving in town traffic I get great mpg because it’s a hybrid but motorway miles it’s not so good, which is the case for most “self charging hybrids”. If I wanted a big comfy off roader it would not be a Range Rover but, a Toyota Land Cruiser, a bland, reliable, capable vehicle. And you can now gat a LWB 7 seat RX450h, not that I need one. It comes down to do you want a reliable car that you can get in and drive, or a badge that 80% of owners are on first name terms with the warranty manager, hi ya.
Move the rear plate to the centre there is a kit you can get. Fit some roof bars takes your eye away from the rear hump. Would be a good looking vehicle.
A friend of mine just leased one these. He has no need for 5 seats let alone 7 seats and choose it over the cool new cheaper Defender because it’s big and imposing . If it was my money it would be Defender all the way, my favourite SUV hands down.
Another great review. True the D5 isn't to everyone's taste, I've spoken to a few people who own one & they're all impressed with it as a vehicle. One guy tows a lot & says its streets ahead of the D4 he had (given the D4's track record on towing, that's some claim). I'd avoid the 2.0 diesel though. Personally I think the vehicle is just too big for a 2litre diesel engine. My mate has one & it's just dumped it's engine oil all over the road at 3 1/2 yrs old with 40k on the clock. The dealership is confident JLR will help as there's a known issue with the 2litre Ingenium engine.
It’s a great car Matt. I’m heading back to New Zealand 🇳🇿 later this year and I’m replacing my Range Rover with the latest Discovery, let’s face it the interior is all Range Rover components, plus I need the full 7 seater with 4 kids. I might go for the petrol SC V6 - fuel is cheap in New Zealand 🇳🇿 👌
I don’t understand the haters of this vehicle, each to their own though. The back end does look a bit,,,odd? But when you’re inside it’s not something you see. Another great review 👍🏼.
@@HighPeakAutos not improved much, still likely to Grenada without warning. The real improvement to this Ford/Peugeot engine (the v6 diesel I mean) happened only recently when Ford put it in its F-150 pickup truck and finally solved the problem.
@@naturshoot8448 yes, thank goodness. But the v6 diesel he recommends here is not a safe recommendation AT ALL! Sorry but it’s true. Snapped crankshaft will happen on all of them snd it’s new engine time, the LR extended warranty specifically excludes it. Believe it or not I’m still a Land Rover fan boy but this PSA Ford engine is one to avoid.
As a Brit Expat now living in the US, I can say we had the D1 and D2. And that it was called the Discovery 2 (I had one before trading it in on a L322 RR). The reason LR went for LR3 and LR4 name was to distance them from the Disco name because of piss poor reliability. I mostly refer to my LR4 as a D4. You are correct that it's called plain Discovery here too (I thought it was called the D5).
The seats look like a comfy place to spend several hours - which is good as it’ll break down at some point, if my experience with previous models is anything to go by.
Beautiful cars, but my boss had a jag, and my colleague a landrover, whilst I had a BMW, they know all their mechanics by their first names, I say hi to the blonde girl on the bmw service desk once a year. Id love a disco or RR, they are beautiful and with a great ride height, and so comfortable too but although I can afford the monthly payments, I couldn't budget for a lot of extra regular garage trips - let alone do my job if the cars in the garage either.
G'day mate what a great review ,love the car or not your review is fair dinkum and to the point. No namby pamby big girls blouse beating around the bush crap. These vehicles are great, not only off-roading but also eating up the kilometres here in Australia. No one vehicle is ever going to please or satisfy everyone's needs but the name Land Rover is still held in high esteem. Looking forward to future reviews.
Disco has great presence and stands out from the somewhat bland German offerings (you know they all look the same) 😏 Fav comments: Moving the Titanic with a jet ski engine The back window a mile and a half behind you 😂😂😂😂 I’ve still got a Disco 4 SDV6 HSE - used properly (constantly muddy) great motorway cruiser, supremely comfortable seats, 174k miles and never missed a beat - if I had the money I’d go for a D5…..but I’ve spent all my money on a new Tesla Model 3 performance so I’ll have to wait 😀
Once again the car featured (after Matts in-depth,interesting & humerus review) I yearn to own. Always had a soft spot for the disco & if the big, split tailgate Rangie didn’t exist this would be my no.1 lotto win car…

Totally with you. Its almost like they do it on purpose 😉
greatly I'd say. Disco numbers have tumbled since the (2020) Defender line was released. In fact I've heard since some of the parts are shared between the two, Defender's get priority as they are simply in higher demand.
(I have a '22 Discovery 5 and happy not to have the "cargo space challenged" Defender 110 with that annoying swing-gate which I considered ;))
good to hear that JLR recently announced the Disco will continue in some form, there is a market for it.
Best car I've ever owned. Just sold me 2017 model with a lot of tears. Going to lock in another new one without hesitation
"The Mercedes makes you look like a rich housewife from Weybridge" so accurate haha!
Looks very luxurious but I can never get past the fact the rear door looks like a walk-in bath! :D Really enjoy the channel. Cheers!
My neighbours are in a line of work that sees them towing heavy trailers through all sorts of rough terrain and muddy fields.
They have Hilux, Discos, RR and RR Sport. They say that the Discos are the best in all-conditions.
Brilliant video Matt and an absolutely stunning vehicle. Thank you for your efforts 👏👏👏👏👏👏
My pleasure!
You are gifted with words love your comments
Thanks
I owned a D2, currently have a D3 and D4. I like the look of the new discovery, I also like the look of the new Explorer. I can't tell the difference in the 2 and don't have any desire to pay the Rover tax until this changes.
I have driven one (for work) , it's like an armchair on wheels an absolute beauty to drive, way out of my price range however
Love the interior on these, but don't like the heaviness of the styling from the D pillar back.
You’ve actually given me a new appreciation for JLR cars Matt! Have me spotting Discos and RR sports I like!
Just got myself 2018 one and it’s by far the best large 7 seat suv.
Love undying loyalty to JLR Matt. They should hire you as the Global Marketing Director. Couldn't help having a chuckle when you said the 2.0 engine may not be reliable at 100000 miles. Thanks for another great post.
Haha thanks. Would be a nice job
I am actively looking at one of these for my Wife, this video couldnt have come at a better time.
That sounds like a good swap 👍
Im upgrading my Discovery sport to a Disco 5 turbo diesel, used of course. Never had major issues with my discovery sport since I got it new, only thing was a turbo assembly replacement after 100k km. With this one it has more bells and whistles to go wrong and it will be a average milage used. But I plan to get a certified used from LR lot and extend the warranty. I get worried about reliability but Im confident it wont be extremely expensive to maintain like a Range Rover. I do take these cars offroad for camping with the family and sometimes tow rental trailers in Canada, so this car fits the bill.
Best of British. Liking this new styling, looks purposeful especially in a dark colour.
Thanks for always backing up jaguar land rover products
Awesome review. Really appreciate the information you shared here. You changed my preconceived notions on this car now and wow! I think I love it.
Thanks for watching
Quick, sharp and to the point👍🏻
Oh how I miss the brutalist styling of the Disco 4.
Me too, this model looks a like ladies or boy racer street car. Bring back the disco 1,2,3 or 4.
The new Disco 4 is now called Defender 😂😂😂
Whenever I see one from the front or side I love the look of it. When I am following one I think it is the most confused design ever. Enjoyed the review.
My brother has one , he’s had no end of problems the worst was the windscreen fell out and the inside filled up with water as there was no seal around the windscreen, three things broke from when he picked it up to getting it home on his very first day , a lovely car to drive but it’s not reliable he can’t wait to get rid of it , just don’t buy one
Oh really. Thats disappointing
Another car out of my price range yet I love your reviews 😍
Thanks for watching
If the ingenium lump gets beyond 40k, it's normally good for 150k +. The suspect ones were the early ones when the QC was a bit lacking.
It's a smart car, not as brash as the Range Rover
The design grows on you...
Great review as normal
It’s a great car Matt. I’m heading back to New Zealand 🇳🇿 later this year and I’m replacing my Range Rover with the latest Discovery, let’s face it the interior is all Range Rover components, plus I need the full 7 seater with 4 kids. I might go for the petrol SC V6 - fuel is cheap in New Zealand 🇳🇿 👌
The V6 would be nice I imagine. Good choice
Can’t afford either, but I’d have one of these over the disgusting Q7 in a flash.
The q7 s the most useless and ugly suv immediately followed by its smaller versions. How expensive the car you drive isn't a measure wealth
@@DR-uc4bj nobody said it was. There is a market for everyone and the q7 has a place and so does the Disco.
I don’t understand the haters of this vehicle, each to their own though. The back end does look a bit,,,odd? But when you’re inside it’s not something you see. Another great review 👍🏼.
I wasn't a fan when it came out but its grown on me to the point where I now love it
Another excellent review. Cheers
It's hard to believe that this is essentially the same engine as found in the Discovery 3, just improved over the best part of 20 years.
Thats right
@@HighPeakAutos not improved much, still likely to Grenada without warning. The real improvement to this Ford/Peugeot engine (the v6 diesel I mean) happened only recently when Ford put it in its F-150 pickup truck and finally solved the problem.
Gone now... replaced by a new straight 6 mild hybrid with the refresh.
That explains it. Cheers
Secret compartment, not so secret any more, 😂😂😂👍
I was thinking twice about buying a land rover. This video helped me make my decision. Thank you
Thanks for watching
Disco's are brilliant, i ve had 5, two Range Rovers and a Sport, The Disco is the best.
Gorgeous best looking Disco to date.. very nice and great review.
The highways England traffic officer ones are great just a shame they got the 3.0 d but are not allowed over 70mph!
Thanks for the feedback
80k new? Wow. Car prices are nuts just now, bad for us, good for you Matthew.
Good video, that Disco is really slick looking.
Great review matt. Just ordered a 69 plate 3 litre hse. Ìt can tow ,is a great family car and I'm a farmer so it will go off road 😀
Disco has great presence and stands out from the somewhat bland German offerings (you know they all look the same) 😏
Fav comments: Moving the Titanic with a jet ski engine
The back window a mile and a half behind you 😂😂😂😂
I’ve still got a Disco 4 SDV6 HSE - used properly (constantly muddy) great motorway cruiser, supremely comfortable seats, 174k miles and never missed a beat - if I had the money I’d go for a D5…..but I’ve spent all my money on a new Tesla Model 3 performance so I’ll have to wait 😀
Back in the 60s, a car that could do 30mpg, was considered economical.
Once again the car featured (after Matts in-depth,interesting & humerus review) I yearn to own.
Always had a soft spot for the disco & if the big, split tailgate Rangie didn’t exist this would be my no.1 lotto win car…
Another very fair review. JLR are upgrading a lot of their models at the moment. The new diesels are incredibly quiet and the Pivi Pro is a masterpiece. Just waiting for the new shape RR I have on order for 2022 .
Thanks for watching. Is that when the new RR is released? I've not seen any spy shots of it yet. Hope its nice
@@HighPeakAutos Information I have hopefully Sept 2022. If you can get an opportunity to drive EPace FPace go for it . The new Mhev diesel are sublime and the interiors have really stepped up a notch . Pivi Pro is a real gamechanger too !!
@@68tonyn what’s pivi pro?
@@HighPeakAutos Pivi Pro is the new infotainment system being supplied on new 2021 JLR products . It is night and day better than previous . It also upgrades over an inbuilt WiFi meaning you don't need to visit dealer to do software upgrades . The new dash electronics are miles better too
@@68tonyn that’s very clever
