  • Dr. Shapiro is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon who has practiced in the Scottsdale and Paradise Valley since 1992. According to Dr. Shapiro, he commonly discusses with patients activities they may do following a tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, to avoid doing the work which is a major investment. A proper protocol helps patients heal faster.
For the first week, patients have drains in. Dr. Shapiro also uses pain pumps to help alleviate some of the pain of the procedure. The drains and pain pump catheters can tie you up somewhat and most patients don't do much for the first seven to ten days. Once the tubes and drains come out, most patients feel much better and are able to do more.
Dr. Shapiro has had patients resume walking and low-impact exercise quickly. The most important thing is to allow the internal sutures settle and tighten the abdomen first before doing any activity that will undo the work.
During the first week, any activity that will strain the abdomen should be avoided. It helps to stay slightly bent for the first week while the sutures heal. During this time, the body should signal if activity is pushed too hard.
First the first six weeks, sit-ups and heavy lifting should be avoided, along with any activity that increases central pressure. Other activities that should be avoided include leg pressures and aerobic activity. Walking is good activity after the first week to reduce swelling and prevent blood clots. After about a month, most patients can resume a normal routine. Dr. Shapiro finds that results of the tummy tuck are very long-lasting and complications are close to zero if this protocol is followed.
Abdominoplasty is not a weight loss procedure but a means of firming and flattening the abdomen. After the procedure, you will need to maintain your results with a healthy lifestyle and regular exercise.
The tummy tuck recovery time can also be improved by properly preparing for the abdominoplasty procedure. This includes maintaining a well-balanced diet, quitting smoking, getting regular exercise to help you avoid gaining weight during the sedentary recovery time. It is also important to discuss any medical problems or medications you take with your surgeon ahead of time.

Depends on the person I got through the whole recovery without any help and was back in the gym and dancing after 4 weeks.. I was back to work at a call center after 5 days and walking straight and almost all the way normal after 1 week.. it's been 70 days now and I feel great 100% back to normal although I do have swelling sometimes.. it's not too bad I eat clean and wear a compression garment about 10 hours a day ...
