    You should normalize it next time before hardening. ;-) Been watching Alec Steele since his channel was smaller than yours. = P Along with since picked up a bunch of others like Jason Knight, Torbjörn Åhman, and Hoffman Blacksmithing. Normalize to relieve the stress in the grain of the metal, then quench and use a vice to catch any warps and continue cooling it off while out of the oil. Understand how the grains interact in metal and it's like seeing a secret to the universe. You'll be able to make metal do whatever you want it to, as long as you follow the rules ;-)

    • @jakemakes
      @jakemakes  4 года назад +1

      So the stresses in the steel cause the warping? Dang I've been watching bladesmithing videos for years and never heard a person say that. Seems like a duh.

    • @BlueEternities
      @BlueEternities 4 года назад

      @@jakemakes Yeah when you heat it and hit it, it squeezes the grain. If it's at welding temperature the grain shrinks to a point where it doesn't create stresses but everytime you hit it while it's hot, you suck heat out of it with your hammer blow so the grain starts to regrow as it cools and it able to be squeezed tighter than it wants to be so when you heat it to harden, they start to expand and move, but then contract in the rapid cooling cooling and warp the blade.
      Pretty much, if you heat it till it's not magnetic anymore and then let it cool to room temperature a few times, all those stresses are relieved. The more you understand about the structure of steel and how it changes, the more you find that when it's hot enough, it acts like clay, but at every temperature before that, it works differently, mostly based on exactly what the composition is. Low carbon means you can move it more when it's cooler and won't warp as much, but also can't be hardened as effectively. Takes a lot of practice but if you know how it works, it'll just speed the learning process.
      Sorry to go on. I just see a lot of potential in you and more importantly, the eyes of someone who really just loves screwing around with stuff to make cool shit. Those are the people that make great things with the right information. Do what you enjoy, but not for a second longer than you're enjoying it. Good luck in all of your endeavors. = )

    • @jakemakes
      @jakemakes  4 года назад +1

      I know all about grain structure and normalizing, but for some reason never put two and two together as to the warping in the quench. Much appreciated!! I'll be putting that knowledge to good use in my future builds

    Jake! New subscriber. Just watched literally all your vids. Liked as many as I remembered too. I love tinkering as well. I have posted a few videos og myself. Anyways I have been working on a shotgun primer only gun to shoot projectiles. Much better than the firecracker gun you tried. Anyways again, I challenge you to make a shotgun primer gun. The base of mine is a corpsman 2240. You can use whatever you want. Besides an already made gun obviously.

    • @jakemakes
      @jakemakes  4 года назад

      Okay that is a WAY better idea. How much power does it have? Can you shoot good sized steel ball bearings?

    • @brandonleuchtag8022
      @brandonleuchtag8022 4 года назад

      Jake Makes ill tell you what I’m not to far into testing myself. I’ve fired 15 times. Some bugs I’m fixing. I have been shooting 50 caliber 3 gram ceramic type slingshot ammo. I’m working on consistency and accuracy. But wherever it’s going, it goes fast. Can’t even see it. Blew up the ball a couple times. So you really just gotta play with it. Might need steel to withstand the blast.

    • @jakemakes
      @jakemakes  4 года назад +1

      Nice. I'd never thought of shotgun primers for actually firing things. Im def going to have to give this a try at some point, that is EPIC. Pop quiz: since it IS using combustion for firing, would it not be considered a firearm albiet low powered? Hehe. (in all seriousness, I'm pretty sure it would fall into that vaguely defined category of potato cannons..... ain't nobody knows how to classify it.)

    • @brandonleuchtag8022
      @brandonleuchtag8022 4 года назад

    Great build but wouldn't it been easier to use a broomstick instead of sanding forever?
    I especially like that the handle is a railroad spike as it can also act as some sort of war hammer. But copper is too brittle for this usage right? Too bad you can copper coat steel because you could have done it sturdier out of steel coated with brass tubes but it probably wouldn't look as cool in "goldish". Why didn't you make a sword with a bevel, are there any particular reasons?
    Anyway great build, I guess some little improvement could be made to make it "perfect" but it's already great.

    • @jakemakes
      @jakemakes  4 года назад +1

      Broomstick: Because I had to halve the wood to glue up the blade, it was easier to use a square stock. Pretty hard (and a tad dangerous) to cut round wood on a tablesaw. If I had left off that stupid flat bit at the end of the blade tang I could have just drilled out the handle instead of having to cut it in half, in which case yeah i would have used a broomstick or something. Copper isn't too brittle or soft, but I would want to pin the RR spike to the copper tee if I was planning on using it as a war hammer. Right now it is just friction fitted (albiet VERY tightly) and with extended hammering theres a possibility it would come loose. The reason I didn't do a regular sword blade is one, a RR spike doesn't have enough material to make a wide blade that long, and two I didn't want have to grind double bevels on a sword sized blade with my little bitty belt sander. Its a real pain in the butt. This design is super simple and works great for the simplisity of it... to make it better the main thing I would change is figure out some sort of full sheath inside the bottom copper section, and some sort of more secure latch to hold sheath and sword together. The friction fit works but a real lock in place deal would be nicer. But then the build would get real complicated soo... Yeah I'm pretty happy with it. Thanks man

    • @lecobra418
      @lecobra418 4 года назад

      @@jakemakes Thanks for the very detailed answer. If you know how to make an OTF system you might wanna think about the possibility this system offers. Like making a Bō who could also deploy a blade to transform into a kind of spear, you could as well do a deployable cane and millions of other things like weaponized boots or a glove with deployable claws (kinda like Black Panther except it would be scalpel blades)
      I'm not smart enough but I'm pretty sure you can also sort your armsword/tonfa issue by using the otf system, using it the way it works inside Assassin's Creed hidden blades coupled with electronics, a servomotor rotating the wheels inside to open or close with a simple push on a button. Obviously, all wrapped up inside a nice glove, kinda like the Doom Slayer with bolts on the knucle and forearm to make it even deadlier.
      If only I were rich my time would be greatly used... Anyway I look forward for your next video. ;)

    • @jakemakes
      @jakemakes  4 года назад +1

      @@lecobra418 Hahaha oh man I've half wanted to do a springloaded OTF forever.... but man its hard to do. Complicated as crap. Unfortunetaly I'm a deplorably lazy fellow so who knows if I ever will XD I did draw up a design a few weeks ago for an OTF cane... so it might happen.
