I often attend the races at the Meadows just outside of Pittsburgh, and it was my great and good fortune to be able to hear Roger Huston call the races there for over 4 decades. It's not the same without him.
Oh god I was there that day, it was Interdominion night 1997. Everyone thought this guy was hysterical. As he only called the winner Repaki Lad over the line Terry McAuliffe the then regular SA harness caller had to take over the mike and call the rest of the running order haha!
For many years the American tradition was to call just the winner then turn off the mic. Most recently it has been to call the finishers which are involved in the Parimutuel order. Australian born presenter Michael Wrona (currently at Los Alamitos in Southern California) used to review the complete order, but I believe was instructed to stick the betting finishers.
Messiah nailed to the rail! Long remembered this race, a bit of variety something we rarely see/hear in racecalling. But international callers are pretty lazy when it comes to calling anything behind the winner. Most call 'the result' rather than the 'race', so too bad if you finished fifth...
Not a lazy announcer. That is the American style, although in recent years track announcers will also call the first 3 or 4 across the line, depending on whether there is a trifecta or a super in that race.
