  • The colour and excitement of a day at the races captivates thousands of South Australians each year at tracks from Kangaroo Island to Roxby Downs, Morphettville to Oakbank.
But behind the scenes there’s a much bigger story.
In this video, Thoroughbred Racing SA explores how the benefits of the racing industry flow into the economic, community and social fabric of South Australia.
We speak to the jockeys, trainers, breeders and club officials who work tirelessly in helping the industry generate more than $280 million in economic benefits to South Australia each year - and they are just the tip of the iceberg.
Racing is the second highest attended sport in the state - second only to AFL- and employs more than 2500 South Australians.
Thoroughbred Racing SA Chief Executive Officer, Jim Watters, says the aim of the video is to highlight the tireless work that goes on behind the scenes in the South Australian racing industry.
“We want it to be a conversation starter, both within the racing community and outside of it, about how we can work together to grow this magnificent industry in SA, and make it stronger,” Mr Watters said.
“The wider community often only sees the glamour of our major feature racedays. However, we are an industry which is vital to the state, requiring hard work and dedication from thousands of participants.
“It is an industry which provides opportunities and employment, economic and community benefits right across the state.”
So sit back, enjoy, and don’t forget to throw your support behind thoroughbred racing in SA.
As leading breeder Sam Hayes says: “if we’re the best at what we do in SA, we can be the best at what we do in Australia and the world”.
