  • Sentences said in The Last Duel:
    - Semper amorem minui vel crescere constat
    - Unam feminam nil prohibet a duobus amari et a duabus mulieribus unum
    - the third sentence is by greek philosopher Plato and I couldn't find a correct latin translated version.
German, they're talking about the protagonist of a book (Parsifal):
    Jacques: Sag mir (tell me)
Marguerite: Er ist naiv und dumm (he's naive and stupid) / ich bewundere das (I admire that).
J: Er weisst was er will und er gibt nicht auf, bis er es erreicht. Grosse Geiste gehoeren zusammen. (He knows what he wants and doesn't surrender, until he obtains it. Great souls go together).
    In Silence:
-Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum, benedicta tu in mulieribus...
Quia tu es, Deus, fortitúdo mea: quare me repulísti? et quare tristis incédo, dum afflígit me inimícus?
    - Ne permittas me separari a Te. Ab hoste maligno defende me.
In hora mortis meae voca me, et jube me venire ad Te,
Ut cum Sanctis tuis laudem Te. In saecula saeculorum. Amen.

As someone who studied latin, I give kudos to the speed and self-assuredness with which he speaks, despite his hillarious english accent (not that mine is better).

Oh no they're not trying to do an English accent in this movie. They were trying to make something entirely new. Afterall they were at war with the English lmfao

As a German it's so weird to hear Adam talking in my language XD. I think he did a good job, it does sound like I imagine medieval German might have sounded like while keeping in mind that they're supposed to be in France. I love it when they recreate retro or historic scenery in movies, it gives you more of an idea how people used to live. Haven't seen The Last Duel yet but I can't wait to do next month! The acting is very nice already!

Germany and France have a tremendous influence on the spoken image of Europe. Where in some schools around the world English and Spanish is taught as a second language, in Europe it is always German, french and English.
When I was still at school there were Turkish lessons for my Turkish classmates. And I have no clue who needs Turkish in everyday life in Europe except for Turks among each other.
I always asked myself what my Turkish classmates needed it for and why there was something like that for the Turks. I also had Greek, Italian, Albanian, Polish and more rarely, Russian classmates, And very often, of course, Germans but they never got their own language as an subject except of course German because I live in Germany.
Only Turks had to take Turkish lessons. Usually German and English are only taught.
      Verstehe ich bis heute nicht.
(Entschuldige wenn ich nicht deutsch geschrieben habe aber ich wollte, dass es die anderen auch verstehen)

Regarding the comments on the accents and pronunciations of the Latin and German. Remember, you folks are comparing them to the current pronunciations of the modern version of the dialect. How it may have been spoken in 14th century France may have been different. English doesn't even sound the same, especially with cadences changing. A Frenchman speaking Middle ages German would probably NOT sound like current German.

People praising the cinematography and the actors Jodie, Adam, Matt. But Ben affleck also nailed his role as Peter II, Count of Alençon. IRL he was like that and remained hostile to Sir Jean. Everytime I saw Peter just hated him which proves how great Ben is.

Yes I've studied latin in high school! :) The parts in Silence are ok, especially the last one in this video, it's perfect. While the scene of the dinner in The Last Duel...uhm, he pronounces some words in a bad way, makes some mistakes with the accents but it's fine, we forgive him!! I just wish he had a better coach for the german language because I have a degree in languages and couldn't understand clearly, had to find a translation lol 😆 poor baby

Yeah, at least he tried his best and he kinda did a good job with that in both movies :) (since it's not easy to get a perfect pronunciation of a language that you may never have studied or learned on your own!).
Agree with you for the German part, I speak German fluently (but I'm Dutch), and when I saw TLD in English for the first time I didn't think Jodie and Adam's accents were quite bad lol, who knows if it was intended for the scene or just, as you said, the dialect coach didn't do a good job with them 😅

I want to see HOG in English too, also because I'm not crazy about the German dubbing of this movie (at the moment I live in Germany for studies and work), Adam's voice actor in this movie also voiced him in the Star Wars trilogy, I like him, but he doesn't have Adam's big and strong voice 😍😂
Nice to know! The best thing is that if you study German, you already have a good basis to start learning Dutch, one of the most challenging parts is the very similar vocabulary but with different pronunciations 👀

@@SjWhit It was difficult also for me, I just couldn't hear/separate clearly the words. Some say that it's fine in this way, because Jacques and Marguerite studied german (plus, in the Middle Age, so it could have some differences), but they were french, so their weird pronounciation/accent can be in a way comprehensible.

I'm not sure about it but this is what I've found about that "Parsifal" that is mentioned. "Percival (also spelled Parzival), was one of King Arthur's legendary Knights of the Round Table. First mentioned by the French author Chrétien de Troyes in the tale Perceval, The Story of the Grail, he is best known for being the original hero in the quest for the Grail, before being replaced in later English and French literature by Galahad".
