Of the almost uncountable musical pieces that Ton Koopman has conducted, played or participated in, IMO this short, lovely and utterlly charming Cristmas Concerto Grosso by the immortal Arcangelo Corelli has got to be among the best. Many thanks to Orquesta Sinfónica Galicia for sharing it with us.
Music, Dance, Poetry, Sculpture, Writing, whoever is into these beautiful professions within time, learning how to express your feelings through an instrument, for myself, Violin, Strings,, communicate your language with your hands, fingers, light body movement, your head, shoulders, closing your eyes and hear the collective sounds in conjunctions and expression with adagio, allegros and vivace, maybe is the Spanish flavor, or the Italian, German, Russian, I don't think I have favorites. Excelente interpretación de esta composición barroca por esta gran orquesta dirigida por el genial y legendario Ton Koopman. BRAVO !!!. Saludos desde Zaragoza.
Carlos, You are absolutely right. A wonderful piece of music, with a plaintiff tone ( that wilting heart stopping melody in the middle) Great playing by Koopman. Look after yourself. We will survive this disgusting disease.
This is such a beautiful performance. The rapport between the conductor and the orchestra is so apparent, and it fuels the vitality of this lively performance.
At first I was terrified when I saw such a large orchestra, but Koopman and friends are able to keep this intimate. The piece itself is a little miracle, of course.
It’s a good point you make about the size of the orchestra. However, there is a large amount of contemporary evidence that shows that in Rome, Corelli played these concertos usually with an orchestra of between 30 and 40, and on special occasions, up to 80. We almost always hear these works played today by very small authentic/original instrument specialist orchestras, but the truth is, Corelli actually intended them for rather larger forces. If you want to hear a large-scale version of these works, rather than the normal chamber size performance, there is a fine recording of the complete Opus 6 by Ensemble 415, directed by Chiara Banchini and Jesper Christensen - the accompanying booklet is very interesting too - it is well worth searching out for a new insight into these magnificent concerti grossi. That said, I’m not keen on the additional winds - as found in Handel’s Opus 6 sometimes - added in this performance; the additional parts are unnecessary, and Corelli’s writing is idiomatic string writing by a composer who was himself a very fine violinist.
@@joangarcia-alsina2932 Just so everyone is clear, and for those interested, we know this from the payment accounts from the Ottoboni palace for example, along with first-hand reports from visitors like Georg Muffat and Giovanni Mario Crescimbeni who reported the details (indeed Crescimbeni says that the number of players rose on occasion to 150 to the astonishment of all as Corelli managed to keep the whole thing together).
Bravo!! Spasiba! Dzieki! Parabens a todos!! There doesn't appear to be anything this orchestra can't do to a world-class standard!! Thanks for sharing via your YT channel!!
Koopman's experience with period instruments allows this graceful interpretation. I can't see anything wrong with playing baroque music with good musicians. "Romantic" does not seem to be a drawback.
I enjoyed a lot this. I learn with surprise that Corelli used to play his concertos with larger orchesters as it is usual in our times. Koopman has been able to kerep all the things going OK, nevertheless I had the impression that the spirit of the concerrtino is absolutely lost, inmerged on the general sound of the ripieno. I fear I prefer the restricted mood.
Koopman supports the bass line, which is essential to hear the harmonic progressions. At the core of the greatness of Baroque music. The melody is developed along with the movement of the harmony in the bass.
@@daniel3231995 Hey, a fellow fan :D It's absolutely true, though. I admit that a lot of the classical music I know is from the Aubrey-Maturin series (which is one of the many delightful reasons to read/watch it!)
I wouln't say this is unknown: it is probably the most reproduced of all the Concerto Grosso from Corelli. The news here are that it is played by a large orchestra with doubling o triplig the instruments as in current recitals.
I enjoy the accentuated dissonances in the finale. They remind me of The Mosquitos (sic), the first mixed-race group in North Omaha. Wow, does that bring back memories. Hoomeyow!!

Thanks for the very nice music choice this month.
Lovely choice. Thank you Jennifer

Ton Koopman playing Handel’s Organ Concerti is a treat too....he’s a fabulous musician!
