    I’ve been shopping around for big block Chevy crate engines and stumbled across this 540. I think I’m going to order one for my 72 chevelle. I like the idea of the one piece rear main and this has everything I’d want in a bruiser NA street car engine. Car was my dads he bought it in 78 without an engine. It’s had small blocks in it since. It was originally a 454 car so it needs another big block i think

    Very nice 540cid engine guys...it would also be nice if you could show (on the video screen) the RPM that the engine's PEAK TORQUE was made at as well as the RPM the PEAK Horsepower was made at... I know you showed Graphs, etc, and mentioned some words about the power the engine made, but when you're whipping that camera around every second it makes it very difficult to zero in on the all the info... especially the peak Torque and peak HP at their given RPM... thanks

    i myself wish that these kind of vids disclosed fuel amounts used in testing. or even a deliberate 1/4 throttle run timed until 1 gal is used. this really speaks to the quality of mind behind the build !!!!!!!! i can make mass power but can i make it reach max fuel efficience as well .... NOT an easy feat. more than likely the owner doesnt give rats a** about gas as its not often a dailey. with gas at the price it is it would be nice to see builds that show both power and power with mileage. cuz it just might be cool.

    Are higher compression ratio motors on higher octane fuel, lets say 11-12:1 applicable for street use ? I’ve heard the higher compression you go, the more likely the motor is to break or need maintenance.

    I will be 67 in a few months and at age 20 i built a 67 RS Camaro to Yenko Specs so it was a 427/425 with 456 gears and a 4 speed, engine like these weren't even a dream then, that would be amazing in a 1st gen. Camaro and a good solid 5 speed. What would be the cost of something like that just for reference?

    • @davidleary823
      @davidleary823 Год назад

      Do the 540. Or sell the GM and buy a Dart so you can run the mark IV pan and timing cover. 502s can sometimes be bored to .060 but there is a wire that runs in between the bores that isn’t always centered and will get hit sooner or later boring.

    • @firebirdjone
      @firebirdjone Год назад

      @@davidleary823 I bought the crate engine new, to sell it now would be pennies on the dollar so not really an option. It was intended for another project but have now switched gears to install in my 454 Chevelle. I like the 540 idea but it's really going to depend on parts availability. Over the last couple years I've just avoided ordering anything that hasn't been in stock and ready to ship. Rotating assemblies have been hit and miss. Pistons have too but .030 over (509) pistons seem to be more readily available. We'll see what's out there the first of the year, if the rotating assembly happens to be available I'll do the 540. Otherwise the stock forged shortblock will suffice with some pistons to boost compression.
