Hi Mike, what a fantastic looking model, I'm 65 yrs old and can imagine the real thing back in the 50's and 60's must've looked like something from outer space, never saw one myself but just wow!. Merry xmas to you and your family. Thanks for your videos , hope to see more next year. All the best, Kevin
Brilliant video Mike and your informative narration is absolutely riveting, please keep them coming in 2022. From halfway around the world I wish you and your family are the best for the festive season.

Love DP1 I remember going to the science museum many moons ago when it was in there . This was the loco that started me on a life long train love affair with railways ! I think I will have to get one of these even though i have no train set .
dont get a train set THEY GROW AND GROW I had one as a kid but by the time I was 15 interest waned sold it all BUT 30 years later my wife took me a model railway show AND IT ALL AWAKENED AGAIN today 140 locomotives later its practically taken over the house.
Indeed, happy xmàs Mike. It's more about quality than quantity IMO so your videos are worth 100's of some others on YT. Have a good break and see you sometime in January. Paul
Nice running and informative video. Great looking loco, mine still in box, whilst building work taking place. Looked great pulling coaches on your lovely layout. Thanks for publishing x The Bigfella x
I like many historic Diesels, but it has always seemed to me that the 'Deltic' both the prototype and those that followed are the only Diesels that share the majesty of the great Steam Loco's like the A4 and the Duchess's. Seasonal Felicitations to you and yours.
Thanks Mike for another very enjoyable video. My wife is getting worried that I’m now watching Diesel videos! I wish you a very happy Christmas and thank you for all your excellent uploads this year. Many thanks!
Very enjoyable as always mike, beautiful loco, happy Christmas and a happy new year to you and your family, look forward to many more interesting posts 👍
Your model of DP1 is as it is preserved. There was another run of this locomotive but with a cream contrail stripe that ran upwards at the back of the cab and then parallel to the top of the cab doorway. When Deltic started running on the GN mainline in 1959 it was soon found to be too wide to run past York to Newcastle because of clearances in the platforms so it only ran Donny to Kings Cross. On at least one occasion DP 1 hit 110mph with Bill Hoole driving it near Essendine on an up train, and cleared Stoke at 95mph on a down train. You stated that a catastrophic engine failure happened in 1961 and the bodywork had repairs done to it in 1963. These two items are directly related. In March 1961 while on an up express DP 1 hit a P'Way wheelbarrow full of materials ie baseplates and chair screws, that was in the V of an acute xing on a crossover opposite Essendine South signal box. Speed being around 100mph. The result of the collision was that the oil lubrication tank for the Napier engine behind the leading cab was punctured thus causing loss of oil pressure and the engine seizing up. Other parts of the locomotive were damaged causing a total failure of the locomotive. Sometime later the DP1 and train were towed to Peterborough where DP1 was removed and towed to New England Loco. Upon inspection the English Electric tech people decided to have their stricken charge towed back to Vulcan Foundry where it was built. This was done at night. The damage was found to be too serious to make it economical to repair as the production Deltics were being built but with modified bodies to allow running all the way to Edinburgh as the NE and NB loading gauge was slightly smaller than the GN one. As stated the DP1 was eventually had it's damage repaired and repainted and then put into the NRM. It's a pity it isn't able to run these days but at least it is preserved.
Feels almost like I was there. Informative and fun. The US Navy, too, used Deltic power. By the way, how are the hedgehogs? Will Santa be visiting them?

By the way, how are the hedgehogs? Will Santa be visiting them?
Many thanks indeed, we have one hog at the moment
At last an early mainline diesel that was a success and whose descendants gave good service on the expresses on the ECML.
Indeed a brilliant performer
did the big head light ever work on the real thing and does it work on the model?
Two no's there lol
