- On International Women's Day Irish voters are voting in a referendum to decide whether or not to switch out language that is deemed sexist and old-fashioned in their constitution.
If approved, the new proposals would largely be symbolic. But they have still caused controversy and a lot of confusion during the government-led campaign.

☝️
What a linguistic twist:
It does NOT mean that it is a woman's duty to stay at home, but only that she is not forced for economic reasons to give up duties that she has taken on in the house.
A huge difference.
Conversely, this means that the man, or the state, has the obligation to make this possible for the woman!
This means she has a PRIVILEGE that, according to the wording of the constitution, is withheld from men.
☝️
There is no sexist language in the constitution. The original Gaelige text refers to the ‘household’.
Do your research - yes campaigners appear to be mainly paid performers.
well said!
A woman's right to be recognised and be economically provided for in her unique position as a 'Mother' within the home home. This is not sexist!!. Voted No against this referendum 🇮🇪
This isn't what the constitution says
They are trying break up the family structure.
Its a No No...So proud to be irish today...Another knock back for the PC world order
Early results say No.
It's not sexist, and we voted NO!!!! Another news clip based on misinformation.
I voted No No
DW is twisting the language..
For Gods sake get it right..
It’s not sexist when women / mothers do 90% of the work with children & in the home. Never did it stop a woman having a job outside the family. The constitution didn’t say the woman’s place was in the home it gave women specifically mothers the option to not have to go out to work through economic necessity to the neglect of her duties in the home specifically to her children. That isn’t sexist it’s fact and gives women & mothers recognition for the work they do in the family. Removing the only reference to women in the constitution and generalized the terminology to be more inclusive while erasing women & mothers is sexist & misogynistic.. it wouldn’t correct the balance of work done predominantly by women and give credit to all even those that contribute nothing. Fact is most women and mothers have a caring nature and end up looking after everyone else to the neglect of themselves and their own needs. It was a gaslighting manipulative move on behave of the government holding the poll on international womens dat and 2 days before Mother’s Day as if they were doing something great for women.
Although in the constitution they promised to help mothers they never fulfilled that. Most women & mothers work outside the home through economic necessity. Women on job seekers social welfare payment get 2 months maternity leave and then they are hounded for proof they are actively seeking employment or get their job seekers payment cut despite the fact they will find no one or crèche to take a baby of 2 months.
Perhaps it’s time women & mothers of Ireland demanded their rights under the constitution.
Ireland voted no and no
What the constitution says is, a woman cannot be forced to leave her children if she choses not to. There is no law in Ireland that insists a womsn has to stay at home.
There is no law in the constitution that say a womans places in the home ,the people of ireland knew the government was fooling them up tothe2 eyes &they voted No By74 % ,Women &MOTHERS WERE DELETED FROM THE CONSTITUTION IF THIS WAS PASSED TO SUIT LEO ,varadkars Woke. Agenda,he is anti woman &family 😢
Ireland voted NO and NO to 2 referendums. Nothing is changing here in this constitution...the people have voted!
Article 41.2.1° “In particular, the State recognises that by her life within the home, woman gives to the State a support without which the common good cannot be achieved.”
Article 41.2.2° “The State shall, therefore, endeavour to ensure that mothers shall not be obliged by economic necessity to engage in labour to the neglect of their duties in the home.”
This is what you are reporting on in the Irish constitution. Where is the sexism or repression in this? It's intention is to protect mothers who wish to raise children and be a housewife rather than engage in the workforce. Judges in Ireland have even commented on this defending it against claims of sexism, so DW News obviously thinks it knows the meaning of the Irish constitution better than Irish judges.
It doesn't say anything of the sort. It will be academic no anyway, early poll tallies are indicating a resounding NO/NO result, as high as in the 90%s in some constituencies.
Will DW desist from calling the Irish people sexist for excercising their democratic right to reject a referendum for many reasons, none of which have anything to do with sexism?
It's shocking but true
that no woman has ever made it to the 7-member Chinese 🇨🇳 Standing Committee since its creation 70 years ago.
Wow...
voting yes gives women less rights
Get it right up ye, DW. 🇮🇪✊
False again!! Another media outlet stating false information and bending the truth. Please read the two articles and reference them correct.
Jesus Biased much?
True but not an excuse for blasphemy.
@@biulaimh3097sadly this is a very common occurance in Ireland.
@@biulaimh3097 Yea it is a bad habit ,point taken.
lt does not say that
Your report is just not true. I strongly suggest that you correct the error.
Don’t you think it’s deliberately wrongly worded?
@@dareemmanuel6079 The report gives a completely false impression of the actual wording in the Irish constitution and suggests that it states that women should remain at home. That is just not true and the Irish people voted overwhelmingly by a majority of over 2:1 to retain the existing articles of our constitution
Since women have stopped taking care of the home, societies have fallen apart. People are more selfish, less intelligent, and have a whole list of emotional and behavioral problems. We all depressed and on drugs.
Lolwut
@@willfungusman8666 I made a typo!
you forgot this at the end > /s
So in your patriarchal mind, that is women's fault?
The economic realities that forced women into the workforce, cost of living , low wages, has nothing to do with it? If women went back to staying at home. Can you men financially carefor those women and their children
@@RA-ms3je Did wages lower before or after women liberated themselves into wage slavery? I know the answer, let’s see if you do.
downvoted for biased title. It ISN'T sexist language.
Based Ireland
First the Irish and Western Europeans should define what a woman is
Noooo! This is your Work from home loophole! :p
The guys who put that in were testerical.
How so? The article protects Irish women who choose to stay at home and care for their kids. It is brilliant and beneficial and millions of women have benefitted from it.
And what about men's duties? "Women's place is anywhere she wants it to be." Is men's place also where he wats it to be? Hypocrisy?
This is a very poor analysis of what the constitution actually says. No Irish woman is compelled to stay at home with her children if she would prefer to be employed outside the home. Many would like to stay home with their young children and cannot afford to do that, however.
No,No.
What a waste of time.
Men can be, yes.
nope chief
Just another woke talkshow. Nothing to see here
Its not sexist
puppet journalism
the irish should remove the british monarchy first
Thats the UK and has nothing to do with Irland why do you ask Irland to remove another countrys simpolic monarchy o.O
The countries full name is 'The republic of Ireland'
@SI-vb7hd it actually isn't...thats a football team...look at your passport it's Ireland or Éire...the Irish government once dismissed an extradition order because the UK addressed it to the 'Republic of Ireland'
Whataboutism. A logical fallacy. Cringe.
That sounds extremely based. God i hope they won't
Testerical lulz
I think it is good idea. Living in Russia and facing this language, I am witnessing how same language is used by more militarised part of society.
But this reform should also take into account more education on why this is important, how violence is connected to this mindset.
And also it is important to create spaces where people can meet a spouse. Because not everyone who is feminist is against creating families. It is about stopping imposing roles.
I would also like to add that I read some materials about gay people relationships, about people who changed gender and who detransitioned. For me it is also obvious, that violence pays significant, I repeat, significant! role in oorientation. Violence in society, glued to strict social roles lead to attempts to escape.
It is important to educate people.
Опять мущинки угнетают?
Nosnece ,What you are trying to change is human nature
which can at best tempered but not changed.
If passed, it's up to the courts to sort out any issues arising. Lawyers should be delighted if the country votes Yes - more work for them. As usual, the Aontu party will be on the losing side, hand wringing and angry at their own incompetence. Whatever Aontu thinks, the opposite will be the better version.
The vote predictions say NO!
There is a difference in men and women. We are not the same nore equal. The level of degradation in America reflects that.
Going to jail for words. Western democracy at it's finest 👌.
See this dude? See him signalling? He wants authoritarianism for the world. He thinks he'd still matter.
What is point of having wife that don’t like home duties?
I can't even believe a European country has that language in it's constitution 🤷🏼♀️
Debora are you Irish? Because if so, your ignorance is astounding. If not, how is it your business? The article allows legal protection for women who CHOOSE to stay home to care for their young children.... it also allows women who have spent years as homemakers to claim a state pension. It is a fantastic article that has protected women like myself for decades.
Never did us any harm did u read our constitution Does not say that
