I have the same refrigerator with the same problem thank you very much for showing this in RUclips for the rest of us that don’t know it had a drain hole in there
Excellent instructions, clear and easy. After defrosting the fridge overnight (lotsa camping coolers in THIS family), it took me about 20 minutes to switch out the parts. Videos like this give us as consumers a definite edge in repairs.
Better than the instructions from the manufacturer I tried to follow a few months ago.. without success. Your instructions were very clear and finally fixed the issue I've been mitigating for the last year. Nice job!
Just got finished fixing my Whirlpool Fridge/freezer thanks to you. Your step by step instructions were PERFECT! Thank you for saving me at least a couple hundred $$'s. Took about an hour
Outstanding instructional video. I was about to call a repairman until I came across your video. Simple and thorough. I saw another video where the guy cut a slit in the nipple, I did that hope it helps. I also used my Shark steamer attachment and it took about 10 minutes to clear the hole. After that the water flowed straight through. Thanks again.
I have the exact model in the video and the instructions were wonderful!! Thank you so much for posting this video. I don't think I could have tackled this on my own without your direction. You saved this single mom from wasting tons of money with a repair man.
You hit the nail on the head on this one. There was lint in the nipple which blocked the water, so it froze up and blocked the drainage hole causing water to settle on the bottom of the freezer, and when that froze it leaked out. Thank you for the video!
Thanks CLS Allinone for this video, its saves our couple of hundreds dollars. Very easy to do after you instructions. We only clean the filter from the back and we didn't opened the fridge from front as its our is more complicated and also we have a extra deep freezer. We stopped the fridge for 6 hours and all the water drained automatically from the front. Thanks again.
Thanks for taking the time to make the video. I've been delaying laying a new floor the frequent water leakages would have ruined it! There is no way I could have worked out what to do myself, so you saved me a service call. Thanks again!
These instructions with some minor adjustments (same refrigerator--different drawer set-up) worked perfectly for us. Excellent, complete, not-too-intimidating video instructions.
We have this exact refrigerator with the same problem. Thanks for the video. You probably saved us $200 on a maintenance call. It took us a good part of the day, but it was time well spent. Much appreciated!
This is an excellent video. I have watched 5 different ones on the same subject and this is the only one that actually shows the critical part to remove. Thanks!
Nailed it! All of your instructions were perfect and I had this done in less than an hour. I will be putting a reminder on my calendar to clean the defrost drain check every year.
Just replaced this part today. It's a straight forward fix. I defrosted the fridge over night, instead of taking apart taking apart the lower freezer components and then using a hair dryer, chipping away the ice, etc. as shown here. The instructions in this video are good. I purchased the new design P-trap/Drain pipe. Only issue I found with the replacement parts is that the white plastic o-ring that needs to be installed over the drain tube that exits the freezer makes for a very tight fit installing the new drain pipe. I used a small utility blade to shave off some of the plastic from the inlet hole of the drain pipe, then applied a very small amount of plumbers grease to help make it easier to slip it over the white plastic o-ring. Worked like a charm. As shown here, the real issue is with the original rubber grommet that was used in production for these fridges. They get all gummed up over time and won't allow the condensate to drain into the drain pipe and down to the pan in the base of the fridge. Very poor design. The new drain pipe should definitely eliminate ever needing to do this again.
Worked like a charm! I ended up using a hair dryer because we had a huge build-up of ice. And then I had to pour hot water down the drain hole to clear the ice plug. Thanks for the instruction!
Great video. I have a Maytag version with different top basket mounts that caused some delay in re-fitting. That crazy "grommet" RtoR ( round to rectangle ) caused all the problems! I changed it slightly so it cannot plug up again. Believe it or not, we just experienced this leakage the day after our new tile floor was laid!!! Good video, saved me a service call.Steve.
This was GREAT! We bought ours in 2011, had it repaired under warranty where they tech did a "hack" and cut open the nipple a little. Today 9 years later, the problem recurred. ONLY to find out there was a class action suit about this manufacturers defect for $21 million. EXCEPT it was only if you had bought the unit within the previous 5 years!
Thanks! Second time in 5 years I have had ice build-up. So bad it got into freezer light switch and froze it to OFF position. This video also works for Ikea fridges (of 2011 era and others) as they are Whirlpool. Ice maker and drawer arrangements are a bit different. Took the opportunity to get rid of that ice maker as we don't have water line. Suppose I should get P trap to replace the rubber grommet next time it happens. Used a hair dryer to melt ice, and shop vac to suck up drain reservoir water.
OMG! I can't believe what has to be done to fix this problem. Wish I had known before we bought this fridge. Icemaker has been a problem too. I get chunks of ice mixed in with the cubes as if its leaking water in the tray!!! Thanks for the video on how to fix it!!
My freezer developed the same exact problem. Thanks to your excellent video I was able to repair it my self and I can assure you that I don't normally tackle jobs like that. Great job!
I would like to say that I followed your video, and you were correct only mine is a Maytag and it has draws in the bottom . Got them out of the way and everything went good. Thanks for the info.
We've had water leaking out onto the floor for a year. You showed us exactly how to fix it. I have liked and subscribed. Is there any other way I can reward you?
Best video for fixing a leaking Maytag etc refrigerator. A few things I would add, I had three things that I had to fix before I corrected the problem. 1. Check and make sure the drip/evaporator pan in the back of the refrigerator is not cracked (mine was) Part number is stamped on the bottom and is easy to order on line. 2. The little black rubber nozzle leading to the drip pan was clogged. The only way I could clean it was with some "goo gone". Soap and water wouldn't touch it. 3. I had build up of ice inside the refrigerator. Make sure all the ice is all gone, especially the drain hole. I finally cleaned mine with hot water until it flowed freely into the drip pan.
Thank you so much! I have a Kitchenaid fridge with the same problem. I followed your instructions and it saved me a new fridge. One thing I did a little different to speed things up is use a hair dryer on the frozen areas. Thanks again.
Thank you SO much. I have a Frigidaire (same company, right?) which was leaking all over the floor. The local appliance guy wanted $90 just to walk through my front door. You saved me a lot of money. It was easy following your instructions. Thanks again!!
Just did it just under 2 hours from the time I started to empty freezer to putting everything back in. Was so simple with this video. Not sure exactly how much money I saved but sure it was 2 to 3 hundred bucks. Thanks
The best video ever! Easy to understand! And I think this video applies to all of those modern refrigerators. I have Frigidaire professional, and this worked!!
This video is perfect... My maytag has the W in the model # but almost exactly the same. I am "great figure of a man" ..... At least for today... THANK YOU.
Took about an hour to get the drain to clear. Used the turkey baster and warm water as suggested. I am ordering the p-trap kit because the small rubber nipple has degraded and feels sticky. Thanks for the video and tips.
+73mckey Did you use a hair dryer only, or hot water + dryer? I wonder if I can unplug my fridge and hold a hair dryer there for 40+ mins without taking it all apart...?
Thanks for uploading the video. I have the same ice built up underneath the freezer section. Mine is an LG, but I guess they all work about same. I was really baffled by why the ice was building up, now I know why, and how to fix it.
Thank you so much for this step by step video! My handywoman skills are limited to hang a picture, change a lightbulb etc. but with your video, I fixed my fridge. Your explanations were very easy to follow. I had to show my husband the video to see what tool you used as my knowledge of tools includes hammer and screwdriver. That might be obvious to anyone else but for the novice it would be helpful to mention the name of the tool. Also, I couldn't figure out how to unhook the water tubing on the back of the fridge but I had turned the water off just like you showed in the video and the tubing was long enough to remove the panel with the tube attached. My model of fridge had some additional wire in the back that I had to disconnect but again, very easy. To anyone out there contemplating following this video to fix your fridge: this should give you confidence that you can do it with this video. I have zero experience or even knowledge of the tools (it was a socket wrench in case I'm not the only clueless one attempting this) but I now have a working fridge that doesn't leave puddles of water for me every morning!
Thank you so much for this. I don't have this same exact fridge but it was the same exact fix. I have the fridge with a separate vegetable drawer. You rock!
Great instructional video! Wouldn't using a hair dryer expedite the melting of the ice in the coil area of the cabinet? Couldn't you use a small shop vac to remove the water from the collection pan in back? If the nipple clogs and causes this problem, couldn't you expand the orifice so that it is less likely to trap debris? I just got one of these refrigerators and I have been reading all the complaints about the ice build up and water leaking problems. I am trying to figure out how to prevent this before I have an issue. Thanks for taking the time to make such a helpful and detailed video.
You can order part number W10619951 @ no charge to effect a permanent fix for this problem. I ordered mine via live chat yesterday and it shipped today. Call Whirlpool @ 844-200-5460 or request a chat sessions @ www.whirlpoolparts.com. Have your model and serial numbers handy.
+Dave Cook I tried like heck to have them ship it @ no charge but they wouldn't budge. They claim they have no claims for this problem with my model gb2fhdxwq06. But the problem and my freezer look just like the video. I wanted to have everything I need for the permanent fix before I go to attempt this, even if I have to pay for it, but I'm not even sure if this part works for mine.
+dc2257 I had to insist that I wasn't paying for a service contractor to do the work. They finally agreed to ship me the part. My fridge is apparently still covered under the warranty, so that was good.
I have the same whirlpool refrigerator issue, where ice builds on the bottom every 2 months. So far replaced the freezer gaskets and clean the black nipple at the back, cleaned the drainage too, but I think I didn't remove much of the ice. Well next time I will do a better job. Thanks for the video.
+skeeter Sampler Did you use a hair dryer only, or hot water + dryer? I wonder if I can unplug my fridge and hold a hair dryer there for 40+ mins without taking it all apart...?
Thanks for the clear instructions - one question though. Can I just skip the manual defrosting - seems like a lot of work to take apart the trays and back panel etc. I was thinking to unplug the fridge and let it naturally defrost then once that is done, clean/replace the grommet - is there any downside to this approach?
Thank for taking the time to make this video. I tried other videos, but too much wasted time. You cut through the unnecessary wasted time and went straight to the point. Thanks again. Why do they make such a system with that pinched off rubber plug that gets clogged? I wonder if it can be run without. If it happened once, it'll happen again. Quick Note: I guess that grommet has a slit so the water can't drain too fast into the outside tray? Anyway, I used an electrical zip tie around the grommet up where the slit is. Using the zip tie, I compressed the upper part of the grommet which opened the slit up slightly more than it was originally. I hope this doesn't cause any problem. Oh, yes, the grommet was clogged with all kinds of bunched up lint and junk, and the lower external tray was dry as a bone.
Thanks for the video! Did as you said and didn't really find a clogged drain but a huge chunk of ice covering some copper line and electrical part. All cleaned now. My leak came when we ran the dispenser. Maybe drain had slight clog but I was able to clean it all. Thanks again
Nice!!! *Would this also lead to the freezer not getting cold enough to freeze [just staying around fridge temps]?* Thanks for this video, it's definitely part of the solution I need!
Lol. I've had this problem for about a year and I blamed my ice maker! Disconnected it, problem still there! Then I checked this wonderful thing called Google and U-tube. Found the problem right away. What really bugs me is that Whirlpool will NOT cover this replacement part for their fucked up design. Fridges are basically the same design, but I`m not buying anything with name whirlpool on it anymore. Order came up to $52.00 which includes everything. I don`t think that would've broke whirlpool! But they just lost this customer!!! Thanks for your help C.L.S Allinone:-))
Thank you so much! My "nipple" was just packed full of black dog hair from both of my dogs. Once I cleaned out the nipple, the problem was solved. I did not remove all the baskets at the front; I just went straight to the nipple at the back. Thanks!
Everything worked great - removed the tube in the rear of the frig and cleared the plugged area but after defrosting and clearing the ice build up around the inside drain, it still will not drain - thought there was more ice build up in tube but been defrosting for a few hours Any suggestions ?
Just know that if the drip rubber valve isn't clogged up it is something else causing your issue and a lot of times in 2 to 3 weeks its back been through it, some of the other issues are the condenser fan right above the coil that you use the hot water to unfreeze also seen a lower freezer door that looked like it was sealing and was not causing this issue as well as a ice dispensor seal on bottom of ice maker where the ice comes out not closing or broken and also of course this problem.
Great video. I just cleaned mine out and THEN watched the video. My suspicions were right -- the nipple hd some lint in it. I cut the slit opening with scissors to make it a little bit more open. Can I just cut the bottom off so it is competely open? Also - I did not remove the inside cover. Instead the frig was emptied and defrosted for 3 days. Good enough? water flows freely down the chute.
+Coffeedogs04 Yea as long as it defrosted you are good most people are unable to wait three days for fridge to defrost on its own. Be careful cutting too much off the nipple it may splash on to floor if it flows to freely. Keep on eye on it. Here is the permanent fix for the drain tube they offer from whirlpool now. docs.google.com/file/d/0BzIiBNwRIV4NNWJNNmx0andROGs/edit
What's the purpose of the rubber grommet? I have a kitchen aid fridge and have already made this repair twice. Got a year this time but stepped in a puddle last night. Just wondering the purpose since it gets clogged often? Can you just bypass it?
I just had this issue. About once a week, I'd have to clean the sheet of ice out of the bottom of the freezer or it would leak. Then I started having an issue with the freezer frosting up. I was scared it would completely ruin my hardwood floors so I broke down & had a Whirlpool tech come out. Whirlpool covered the parts since this is a known issue and he charged $129 for labor. It took him about 30 minutes.
Thanks for this video. This was my second time doing this repair (last time was 3 years ago). I liked the ear plunger idea. I was half thinking of just leaving the little rubber funnelly thing off so this wouldn't happen again. What benefit does this thing have?
+B MacK In another great, very similar video the technician replaces the nipple (huh huh, i said nipple ..) with a solid open round piece with no flow restriction. The nipple is apparently about as useful as male nipples...
Great video, this is my project tomorrow. I've been experiencing these issues for a while, but assumed that the cause was related to my ice maker being broken. Is it possible that the leak could be up in the ice maker area and still leak down into the freezer compartment?
+David Mayhew Me too. I'm having this issue and thought it was the ice maker. I've had the water shut off and today used my heat gun to remove about 4 lbs of ice to the bottom. Then, I noticed water again. Now I know the issue is that damn drain. Very poor engineering Maytag/Whirlpool. Maytag's quality is crap. I'm currently in the process of replacing all my Maytag appliances.
This is a common problem on Whirlpool refrigerators. My drain line froze up and I used a hair dryer, hot water, and compressed air to clear the drain. I never had another problem with the drain. One of my relatives junked his Whirlpool refrigerator for this problem. He refused to have a repair guy come out to his house and fix it for him.
Just made the fix on a whirlpool 4 door refrigerator, thanks for the video. I used the P trap they sent me but would not pay for labor...shame on you whirlpool you should take care of this pain in the ass fix on a $2000 unit you made the design flaw on. Oh well i have already purchased my next appliances and they are not whirlpool...... THANK YOU.... LG
Also, there’s a class action law suit for this problem going on now via Whirlpool only , go to Freezersettlement.com to fill out claim form. 1. Reimbursements for all money paid for repairs 2. Call whirlpool and they will send repair guy with fix kit that replaces the grommet for no charge. Gotta get it done ASAP, Jan 2020 in the date to put claim in so n/c fix it reimbursements. Hopefully you got a postcard, but I’m sure many will lose out on claims for many reasons. Sadly the lawyer group will get a huge pay day they are asking for $1.8,395 million, wow! That does not include Whirlpools n/c repairs, that cash money settlement, I’m sure at the most claims will kit equal the settlement they may get. Bet lawyers come out with at lest $1 million maybe more. So unfair as everything in life right! FYI! I hear ya frustrations with this, I think my floor is damaged from continuous leaks, water you can’t see under fridge, see a buckle of the wood. Freaking idiots who made this grommet design
Is that rubber nipple even needed, I need to take mine apart same issue, Thx. Once a month I have been taking the big sheet of ice out of the bottom, when I see a little water on the floor.
When I installed the new p-trap drain and noticed the drain pan was dry, I thought that was normal. After installation, condensation still persists. So now I will have to take the freezer drawers out and heat up the coil to clear the ice, correct? One question, where do the water go from the drain pan? I know the drain pan won't hold much water.
Correct ice needs cleared its actually faster to scrape ice out versus hair dryer I have tried both . The water evaporates but if there is too much ice build up it could possibly overfill just use rag or sponge to drain pan as it thaws.
Hi. I am a single Dad and this just saved me potentially a couple hundred bucks. I can’t thank you enough. Merry xmas!

sewashburn0529 great news .. unfortunately the fridge drainage design was a poor one causing alot of unnecessary leaks for alot of people out there.

Just a quick note to thank you for the video, it's as if you were looking at my refrigerator when you made it. Diagnosed everything spot on.
awesome
These instructions with some minor adjustments (same refrigerator--different drawer set-up) worked perfectly for us. Excellent, complete, not-too-intimidating video instructions.
Found this by googling my model #, and sure enough, it was spot on to the issue at hand. Thank you for the step-by-step!
your welcome

They get all gummed up over time and won't allow the condensate to drain into the drain pipe and down to the pan in the base of the fridge. Very poor design. The new drain pipe should definitely eliminate ever needing to do this again.
I have a side by side Whirlpool. Little bit different, but pretty much the same process. I know you saved me $150 to $200. I owe you a beer. thanks!!

Worked like a charm! I ended up using a hair dryer because we had a huge build-up of ice. And then I had to pour hot water down the drain hole to clear the ice plug. Thanks for the instruction!

Condorcounter Whirlpool should give everyone a $500 refund for this terrible design. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the how-to video. I just performed the repair myself with only a sliced finger. Seriously, you saved me 200 bucks easy.

Awesome news glad my video helped you out . Good job
Thank you so much for sharing this! No more leaks!😊
THANKS SO MUCH! Best informative video I've ever seen! Worked perfectly!
Thanks for the video. I used a hair dryer to speed up the ice melting process in the freezer. Very easy video to follow!!
+skeeter Sampler Did you use a hair dryer only, or hot water + dryer? I wonder if I can unplug my fridge and hold a hair dryer there for 40+ mins without taking it all apart...?
Both
Thanks for the video, I have been hating on my Maytag for quite some time now. Now I know what is causing my ice build up and leaking.
Thanks dude. Totally worked. I had a massive iceberg hidden there.
Dorron Margalit your welcome thanks for watching. Please subscribe
Yes you can do it this way it just takes a long time depending on how much ice there is.
+Paul Zacharias your welcome
Thanks for the video! Did as you said and didn't really find a clogged drain but a huge chunk of ice covering some copper line and electrical part. All cleaned now. My leak came when we ran the dispenser. Maybe drain had slight clog but I was able to clean it all. Thanks again
your welcome. glad I could help
Thank you so much! This fixed my problem, and saved me so much money!
This video is right on. Follow every step and you will solve your problem. Thank you
Nice!!! *Would this also lead to the freezer not getting cold enough to freeze [just staying around fridge temps]?*
Thanks for this video, it's definitely part of the solution I need!
Thanks!
Rita Smith your welcome
Love this. I have a slightly different model but using your video, I zipped through this. Thanks a bunch!
awesome
Nice video. Whirlpool has the updated drain tube those are horrible. Also a steamer works great.
Everything worked great - removed the tube in the rear of the frig and cleared the plugged area but after defrosting and clearing the ice build up around the inside drain, it still will not drain - thought there was more ice build up in tube but been defrosting for a few hours Any suggestions ?
Vito Giambalvo great to hear
thanks,
I bought a 1 quart steamer to remove the SOLID block of ice in the coil.& on the floor,
still took 40 minutes .
sweet device
+Steve Mccull Glad to hear you got it fixed. Thanks for watching
I'm in the middle of doing this right now. But I waited too long and I have a bunch of ice built up in the back of the freezer. thanks for the video
You're the best man! Save me a lot times when watching your video before taking it out....Thank you so much for uploading this video!
your welcome
Thank you so much for this walk through. I followed your instructions today and was able to fix the frost/leaking problem. Much appreciated!
Thank you. Your fix was perfect and made the job go very easy.
I have the same problem, frozen water, cooling fin have frozen ice and I hope following this video tutorial quick fix help my problem too!
Thank you for the video and instructions!! Worked perfectly, excellent directions!
Molly Kiegelis your welcome
Thanks for the instructions - they were very informative and easy to follow!
I cannot give you enough thumbs up. Thank you
I just had this issue.
B MacK I agree, why bother replacing the nipple?
+MerrymanFins
X3??
+B MacK In another great, very similar video the technician replaces the nipple (huh huh, i said nipple ..) with a solid open round piece with no flow restriction. The nipple is apparently about as useful as male nipples...
Will the leak still be due to clogged drain even if the icemaker hasn't been connected/used? Thanks!
Great video, this is my project tomorrow. I've been experiencing these issues for a while, but assumed that the cause was related to my ice maker being broken. Is it possible that the leak could be up in the ice maker area and still leak down into the freezer compartment?
David Mayhew Its possible but not as common. There should be some sort of water/ice trail on interior walls if its coming form ice maker.
Thank you for your video! Just fixed mine! Worked on Kenmore models as well.
Thank you so much Your video was awesome and I fixed our fridge in just a couple of hours.
Bonnie Flowers your welcome. thanks for watching
Great video, saved me tons of time. Thank you very much!
Todd Fister great news thanks for watching
I am just wondering if I can use hair dryer to defrost the ice quicker instead of squirting hot water on the frozen ice?
yes it works also just not as fast.
Thank You for the excellent video. It is greatly appreciated
Could you use a blow dryer to help speed up the ice melting process?
Yep
Awesome presentation
Is that rubber nipple even needed, I need to take mine apart same issue, Thx. Once a month I have been taking the big sheet of ice out of the bottom, when I see a little water on the floor.
Good job on this video. You should do a tutorial on the "anatomy of a DIY video" for YT.
Thank u! Worked out just like u said!
Next project, fixing that floor!
Dave broderick your welcome please subscribe. Sorry to hear it screwed up the floor too that sucks.
Worked like a DREAM!!!!!
good to hear
Perfect Video Instructions! Thank you!
thanks man
When I installed the new p-trap drain and noticed the drain pan was dry, I thought that was normal.
C.L.S. Allinone Thanks for your prompt response. I'll work on it tonight.
