As someone who never had abs before no matter how good of shape I’ve been in, and now have them at age 40, pardon me for not ever wearing a rash guard.
Wearing shirts under a gi is totally fine! Definitely understand hesitating to wear a rash guard for that reason, was hard to put one on for the first time for me for similar reasons, but ended up preferring it to my own surprise. Thanks for watching!
I'm on the other side of the spectrum. Best shape of my life, but still got some stomach fat and whatnot... Feel freaking jacked/ripped with my rashguard on 🤣
Depends on the gym right? At some everyone has a rashguard underneath, others all barechest (save for the women).. we do the 'wear whatever you want as long as its hygienic' approach 😂
Back when I first started training guys only occasionally wore anything under their gi top. Nowadays it seems like fewer people go barechested like me but I’ve never had anyone tease me about it. I also don’t like how tight compression shorts are and have never had any issues with impacts to my groin while lacking them.
Thanks for sharing your experience I’ve definitely witnessed plenty of light hearted joking about it from students and teachers Wild how much it changed
You never explained your point only to say that other's prefer that you wear something under the Gi? and you'll be made fun of if you don't? Where did you get that? We have a mix at our gym and I have heard zero talk about wearing nothing under the Gi.
@@unitewithch For me personally it is two-fold. The first consideration for me is that only some training partners have been comfortable training without a rashguard or shirt on underneath the gi in my experience, and I'd rather make it the rule to wear something underneath to be broadly compatible. The second one is that it cuts down on chafing and marginally lowers the risk of skin infections.
@@jiujitsujunction sure, I got those points from the video, which I believe is self evident. If someone was uncomfortable, I’m sure they wouldn’t continue to do that thing that makes them uncomfortable. I meant why would you or anyone else in a gym feel the need to ostracize someone for not wearing anything under their Gi? Why would you even care?
@@unitewithch Idk personally doesn't bother me at all, but it does bother some folks. I've seen it happen a couple of times but it wasn't ostracization, just poking fun in an environment where expectations included wearing a shirt or rashguard under the gi.
I hear you, my gym gets over 100 degrees inside in the summer, I still make myself wear compression shorts though and just suffer a little extra haha. Thanks for watching!
Im curious what event organizers you went to that they wouldn't allow rash guard under your gi as ive been doing tournaments since white belt (brown now) and never ran into that problem thankfully
Sorry but you are just incorrect about going shirtless under the gi. This is quite normal to not wear one that how it was originally done and it allows you to have better cardio by allowing your chest to dissipate heat. I do agree that its better to defend against skin infections. Edit also if not being able to wear a rashgaurd effected your performance then your not training hard enough or lack confidence in your technique something as small as that shouldn't effect your game or cause mental anxiety.
I agree that it is better for heat dissipation, but for most people training day to day I think it’s a good idea to match the school norms which are far more often wear a shirt or rashguard underneath. Thanks for that comment, it’s something people can consider for themselves in a school that allows it!
I’ve been to schools with that culture and that’s fine to me tbh but I think most of them encourage putting something on under the gi 🤷🏻♂️ Thanks for watching!
The all point of doing GI is so that you can show your cool abs when the belt falls, hater detected opinion deflected!
Whoops! Forgot that part haha. Thanks for watching!
Duh
Nah the people who are actually in shape you can tell are in shape with a rash guard on
Thats just ego talk 😂

@@jiujitsujunction - 100% disagree.
As a girl in her 20s, pardon me for not wanting to roll with you because I don't want your sweaty bare chest rubbing all over me.

“Do your laundry and take showers” is good enough for me personally but yeah it depends on the gym.
I like your simple one sentence approach 😂
Thank you we are new to bjj i just put my child in the class and wasn't sure how to dress her appropriately, now know thank you
Happy to help hope she has a great experience training

I believe it was Grappling Industries for me 5ish years ago
@@jiujitsujunction I can't remember if I I've done grappling industries or not probably not if it was within last 5 years
IBJJF doesn't allow rash guards
Women need to wear sports bras. No rash guards for them either.
Whats the point of all my mat time if i can't show my abs? 😂
Haha touché! Maybe there’s another set of rules for people with washboard abs? Thanks for the comment!
