I worked in a machine shop for a long time and if the airport needed custom parts for the radar, they certainly could have ordered more than one so they had parts stocked for such an enormously important piece of equipment. That's just crazy they wouldn't have any extra made parts in stores. 😳
i doubt a machine shop would build a fixture, write a program, setup the tooling, do touch offs and setup, prove out the program, and then only run one part. the ATC was likely just counting on the machine shop having more, and waiting for them to ship it. that being said i agree they should have had spares on hand at the ATC.
My dad ran a Cancer clinic for decades as a radiation oncologist and the treatment room had a massive lead door to block radiation from the treatment room that had to have custom hinges to hold the weight, as it required a ceiling mounted crane to lift and even move it. after 35 years the hinges were wearing out so he went back to the welding/machine shop that made the first set (Smileys in Mount Vernon, Washington) and Smiley just led my dad to the back without saying a word and there sitting on a shelf was an extra set he made back when he made the first ones.
