My 01 KX250 smoked all the CRs back in the day. Sounds like this one needs some work. They’re great bikes if you keep up on maintenance and jet it correctly.

This kx looks minty, minor issues, with a bit of tinkering its would be beautiful.
My guess for a healthy kx 250 with stock sprockets was 78 mph depending on year and transmission.
I think it will run better with a bit of petrol in the carb. Did you forget that you said it was turned off ? You should just show what really happens mate, you can’t blame the KX for the fuel being off.

These guys are in love with cr250's. I'm not sure if it's just me but last time I was with my buddies, there was six guys, all stock, mint bikes. Me, on my 96 kx250, my 2 buddies, both on cr250's, one on a yz250, and 2 with rm250's. I completley smoked both of the cr250's, beat the yz250, and beat the 2 rm250's. We all raced 3 times. I'm not sure if it's just me but from what I've gathered the Kawasaki kx250 is one of the faster 2 strokes out there. And besides, y'all gotta clapped bike and comparing it to a mint cr250. Like no shit it's gonna be slower. Get fresh jets, new sprockets, and a fresh top and bottom end rebuild on that bike, and have a good, experienced rider on it, and I guarantee y'all that it will beat the cr250.

@@russellhelms2835 AWESOME. I'm jealous bro. Those are treasures to dirtbike enthusiasts, especially old-school ones like me. That bright lime green contrasting the dark blue seat with Kawasaki across the seat looks so damn smooth. That kx80 is the fastest 80cc 2 stroke dirt bike. I remember way back in 89 when I went on a dirt bike/camping trip with my best friend up in Michigan. I was on a 1980 Yamaha IT 175 struggling to go up a steep sand dune and this kid on a little KX80 probably almost brand new back then, like the same year as yours, came flying up behind me and passed me like it was nothing, having no trouble at all in the sand. 😆
@@christopherwalker6056 Ha, yeah those are great times! Those little KX80’s are really quick! My first MX bike was a 1979 KX080A, bought it used for $365. It was fast, never broke down on me either. Then I got a used 1982 Suzuki RM80Z…I had FUN on that bike! It was a whole different level of power & suspension. It was really quick; I ported my own cylinder on it…following the instructions in (I think) Moto Cross magazine😄it worked! After that was a 1985 YZ125 (modified), and it just kept going😎now I’m almost 53yrs old & STILL ride regularly! Love it just as much as when I was starting as a kid😁
Check the reeds on the kx250, if they're worn out or cracked it will run poorly, and be hard to start. Also check the jetting.
The countershaft seal is leaking that’s why it is smoking so much u can tell if it runs rich from the sound it is not rich but the counter shaft seal is leaking causing it to be hard to start , there will be a tad bit less compression the bottom end will rattle more and the bike will smoke like he’ll also your transmission oil will slowly go down
Check the top end it's a 2 stroke they need to be maintained that would make it hard to start, then clean and maybe check jets in the carb. I guarantee you'll be satisfied with how that bike runs when it runs right!
I'm guessing a powervalve issue because it was not hitting full powerband along with some carb issues.

Obviously gonna be slower than the cr250 if it’s not jetted right, geared slower and needs a rebuild. Not really the bikes fault it’s just that the cr has been taken care of.

I ride a '96 kdx200 and it will go faster than 64. It is running rich not lean, a lean 2 stroke makes more power but runs dangerously hot. Thats why it wouldnt start in the beginning. If you fix one up and rag on the other, of course the fixed up one will run better. I prefer kawasaki over honda anyday myself, in fact i pretty much dispise hondas. Treat a kawasaki good and keep it maintained and it will last. My 96 has a year old cylinder and pison and i took the head off a month or so back and the cylinder and piston both looked flawless and didnt have a single scratch on them except for a bit of caked on carbon. Im pretty sure the video is on my channel, im tellin ya though...put some time and love into the kawasaki and it will be the best bike you own. Hondas are too over rated, my buddy says hondas are better yet hes went through three quads in the course of a year while i've had the same bike for over a year and she still runs strong. Cant tell me 3 hondas to 1 kawasaki isnt coincidence or luck. Kawasakis may be heavier and geared a bit slower but adjust the gearing and it will be a very reliable fast bike, they are built to last.

If it needs a rebuild then chances r the crank seals r leaking too. If u take the stator cover off and there's oil in there , then ur burning oil and fouling plugs and it looks like ur running rich but ur not. It's gear oil mixing with the gas

Brian Stokes yeah but they probably won't do that but even with better gearing probably still won't beat the cr but the only reason you would change the gearing is for better top speed or better acceleration but has none of those slow in both perspectives
The kx is running lean
OGAstra running lean makes them more powerful but they blow easier when ran lean, it was too rich
I have mint 02 ktm 125sx 2 stroke. No nicks or dents has fmf gold fatty and turbine 2 exhaust no dents. Top and bottom rebuilt professional. Beautiful bike. 35 hun. MSTA

@@jaydensdream714 yeah but the problem I have with cr250's is that they develop so many malfunctions when you don't regularly maintain them. This obviously applies to all bikes but for some reason the cr250 line develops a lot of problems, my cousin has one and lemme tell you that bike was a mint bike at one point. And with only about 8 months of not cleaning it, it needed a top end rebuid, new jets, new spark plug, new air filter, and the frame rusted up and needed to be detailed. The bike completley just became clapped. Its not even because of weathering, the bike just developed so many problems that he couldn't keep up with them so he sold it for 850$. Cr250's really need to be mint bikes in order to have it running well, because if you have one issue with it, its just gonna keep on developing more. And I've let my kx sit, and only thing that needed to be changed was the plastics, everything else was good on it.

Tune the carb, new rings, a crank seal, new plug, oil, actually put good mix..it should be on par with honda 01 I believe the rm250 cr250 and kx250 make same power and within a pound of each other so it's not night and day
Spot on bloke. Looking at the shit coming out the pipe the crank seals are shot. Can happen from kicking them wrong as they do.

I have a 2005 CRF250R, with pro taper handle bars, pro action suspension, pro circuit pipe and others I can't remember. The first day I got it, it blew up but it's up and running again.
the later year KX 2 strokes were some of the best in the business. Hardly a piece of junk, you just have no idea what you are doing. They all don't just run forever without maintenance.

It was running pretty rich. But word to the wise. When you buy the Yamaha's and the Kawasaki's also ktm. 2-stroke even those brands in 4-stroke. They don't have much top speed because they are internally geared for the track with more power to pull turns in ruts. And if you watch some motocross vids they can literally come out of a turn coast right up to the base of any jump and drop the clutch and pin it and clear it a with no problem.
Not hating cuz i dont know who u are so dont want to make a bad impression but seems like you dont really maintain youre bikes... I have a kx 250 and it screams yes it does feel bad but mine had bar risers too and i got rid of them and it actually felt better to me and it put me in a better riding position but you might be having to rebuild and check the power valve didnt really sound like a good hit but it did get on the band once you do some mantinence it will go faster for sure

All these people bitching and moaning acting as if they boys are seriously invested into this bike. They literally buy and sell constantly and don’t really focus on building/maintaining every single bike they get. They will literally buy a POS bike for mad cheap, do a top speed test if it runs then flip it for a profit.

Nah but on a serious note that thing kicks way too easy and sounds unhealthy. my 98 does go about 75. It needed a top end rebuild which takes about an hour and you would have had a good bike. Kawasaki was the leading name in 2 strokes in the mid 90s to early 2000s until like 2002 when Yamaha started to surpass them. Honda 2 strokes are generally slow compared to all other makes stock to stock

@@jaydensdream714 Yes I have the same bike, that bike is definitely jeted with too big of jets if he where to drop down in jet size and start tuning from there it would run a lot better, hes also got a torquey sprocket set up on there, more torque = less top speed

Chase Wendel yeah when I bought it I knew something was up with it. Oh well I will go through it and see if I can diagnose the problem. Might just be the jetting or the gas mix. I never mixed my own gas for it yet,so I don't know what the previous owner mixed.

Bro you really need to learn 2 stroke jetting and the behavior of 2 strokes in different air quality and conditions. That bike is severely lacking proper jetting. It would drive the price of your 2 stroke projects through the roof if you’d just learn some basic steps.
