Great advice! I started off working in wedding videography, I actually did my first 3 weddings for free, to build a portfolio, after getting the experience with the kit and dealing with clients I started charging and then expanded on to corporate work. The long list of content that you make over time helps to cement your credibility as well as client recommendations. I still do some fun projects for free, like kickstarter videos and helping out on short films, as I originally got into this profession not to make money but because I enjoyed telling stories.

Great tip, I've fallen for this trick by companies, never again. was promised so much work, even bought more equipment to help with future projects, but nothing came of it, its a massive lesson, will get there commitment in writing next time.

I totally agree! If you want that bigger client sometimes they have to see that you can handle bigger jobs. That might mean doing something for free.

I completely agree Simeon! I ONLY work for free when it's my idea to do so. I NEVER work for a commercial business for free if they ask. The only exception is when I am occasionally asked to DONATE my services to a charity for which I know i will receive recognition and a tax deduction for my time and effort.

Depends what you mean by "free". Should you ever blast the whole budget of a project to make something great every now and then? Id say yes.

  • @ShaneBeimer

i've always kept "free" work to projects that i could spin off to other things, something that may open a door so to speak.
