GFR was my 1st concert in 1970.I was a mere 12 yrs old and a drum student since I was six filled with glorious anticipation of seeing a real live "rock band." My parents let me go because my music teacher suggested the exposure would be good 4 my musical future. Our neighbors son was a student radical and about 22 yrs old....my parents bought his and his GF's ticket 4 taking me/ a practice that continued for years and included concerts by Zepp, Tull, Sabbath, Purple-all before 1973
I love this song!!!!It sounds like fun and you can see it on their faces! T.N.U.C still sounds fresh.I takes me back to 9th & 10th grades. Thanks for the memories
REPEAT AFTER ME!!!!! THEY'RE AN AMERICAN BAND! one of the most underrated bands of the seventies, grand funk railroad could rock with the best of them - they were pure rock n roll plain an simple, i can never get tired of listening to these guys, they were serious head music... heavy & hard... grand funk railroad forever...
I grew up in the 70's listening to these guys. I still have a few of there albums, but don't have a turntable to play them. I've started watching them and there old songs on RUclips and I had forgotten how good Mark, Don, and Mel really were. In t.n.u.c Don is really outstanding on the drums. He is often over looked when it comes to Rocks all time best drummers, but I think he should be in the top ten.Grand Funk is Bad To The Bone.
Don Brewer and Ginger Baker are the two best drummers in the rock world even to day. They are the one reason I play drums today. Keep up thwe great work Don.
Wow..I used to listen to this at my friends house. He had an older brother. I was probably about 12 he was a year older than me. That puts me it about 1969-70. This and Led Zeppelin. My introduction to rock other than the more popular stuff back then. The only album I ever owned by GFR was the red album. I'm sure I still have it too. Three guys. Rock n Roll... What more??
I was in Viett Nam when i was listening to Grand Funk Railroad as much as i could, and we got to go to cambodia to a live concert they did for us troops in nam,I thought it was awesome then and still do they are still one of the greatest bands of all times
This is energy and music at it's best! I saw these guys do this at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City a loooong time ago, when they were still on top! The show they put on was incredible,I tell you.WHEEEEEEW!! Mark can still sing this great, too.Oh,and his hair was so long it was below his belt. He wound up cutting the pony tail off for charity, selling it for a whopping $13,000.00!
I saw Palmer, I saw Pert, I saw Paice (on DVD) - but Don Brewer wins the Best drum solo award. Listen to the crowd - no other drum solo ever got the crowd into it like this one did!
I always come back to this one.energy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!better than todays "the world sucks" vibe. even though it does.you can forget it for a few minutes with this.
That drum set belongs in the Rock&Roll Hall of fame,Don gave that set away to someone that needed a set of drums,he said he knows what its like to need a drum kit refering to what Terry Knight did to them.
i am a drummer myself and i have listened to the best drummers doing solos, but man. this guy takes the prize. BEST DRUMMER OF ALL TIME. sorry john bonham, but he has kicked ur ass.
One thing I see with Grand Funk Railroad, they loved to play their music. Thats why most of their songs end after five minutes...but start back up for another two minutes. LOL
Back when the Drum Solo was cool! Somebody needs to have a drum solo channel from back in the day. Led Zepplin, Iron butterfly all had great drummers who played extended solos in concert.
I was exposed to these guys when I was a kid... back in 1970. Eventually took my brother to see them when he graduated College. Great band to this day! And SS66, I think I hear the cam comparison at about 7:43 or so. Bumpity bump bump!
Don was part of the trio I called the Killer B's(Baker, Bonham & Brewer). All were great, but Don sure seemed to enjoy ever second and just had fun doing it.
It's amazing what Don can do with 4 drums and as many cymbals. A lot was done back then with less and that included other major bands of the time. You had in effect what are by today's standards a bar band set up in an arena or concert hall producing amazing sound. Of course the amplifiers were of 100 watts or more but the set up was indeed minimalist.
One of my ALL TIME favourite albums is 'Grand Funk - Caught in the Act - LIVE', a great live album from the same era (Frampton, Deep Purple, KISS, Nugent) of analog recordings that sound exactly like they should - no compression! Picked it up on CD - a great concert!
Arena rock icon’s, the first commercially successful American rock band, and even though the media hated them, the crowds loved them! In fact they broke the Beatles Shea stadium attendance record by selling out in just 72 hours,And if that’s not enough to convey how popular they were during that time then consider this…they opened for Led Zeppelin and manager Peter Grant gave the order to cut their power and have them removed from the stage because the audience responded so well to their show.
Saw them at the Filmore NY in 1971 and when they introduced this song Mark says,"everybody is wondering what this song title is, well it's just plain CUNT backwards". True story. Actually lost my hearing for few days after that concert. Totally awesome group.
Mark, Don, and Mel. Saw them in 1996 at a county fair and saw the Chili Peppers at a much larger venue. If only the fools at the Peppers concert knew what they were seeing had already been done better 25 years prior.
@gcm2645 if you're talking about this vid, it's LA, not Tokyo. I've had this show for almost 20 years! I know there's a Tokyo show from like 83 with Dennis Bellinger on bass...parts of it were on the boxed set.
You got that right, nobody sounds like him. When i was working in Louisville the reunion tour he tried to buy his west amps back from me,Those were the ones that gave him that sound.Check out westlabs.. and a you know what com Dave West is a genius.
dg0557: Last I heard he was still living in his farm in Petoskey, Michigan. I still wish they would put personal differences aside and get back together as the original Grand Funk. Best kick ass band of all time.
@DsveysNavy this is from a video recorded and originally only released in Japan of the 75 All The Girls In The World Beware tour. A visual document of the Caught In The Act record. You can get it in the U.S. now from ads in the back of music magazines.
Great solo.Saw a fantastic drum solo by Mitch Mitchell many years back.Awesome due to Mitch's jazz drumming expertise. But this solo is a great "pure rock" example!
@47tooter Hey hey, I appreciate that. I'm going to check that out for sure! Thanks. And just so you know, GFR was the very first concert I ever went to in either 1973 or 74 during the shinin' on tour. Wet willie band opened for them.
Not to many people comment on Mark and Dons harmonys but it doesn't get much sweeter.Don Brewer your awesome,I met Mark in 2007 and if your anything like him your probably just as cool as he is.I have the same key as you Don and my band and i have done alot of GFR tunes that you guys didn't play live like Pass it around,Stop lookin back, and Queen bee,and i feel like a real dink because it took me 20 years to figure out what t.n.u.c. mean't duh. Get back with Mark for Heaven sake.
Was there a studio version of this song, because Don Brewer was absolutely dynamite in this one. I don't use the word "dynamite'" very often, but this is simply phenomenal.
I don't remember there being any energy drinks back them...These guys were the very BEST !!! So good in fact they opened up for Led Zepplin(also a great band) and were booed when GFR left the stage.
@frasierdf ...nice to hear (read) there are some young folks out there that appreciate GFR&R...keep up the good fight with your band mates...if you play it, they will come...
Don Brewer with the butt-kickin' drum solo on this song.....Would have been cool if Don Brewer would have drum-battled with Buddy Rich or Carmine Appice in this concert clip. Looks like this concert was roughly from 1973 or 74 when keyboardist Craig Frost joined up with the band. PUT GRAND FUNK IN THE ROCK HALL OF FAME!!!!!
No way....Mark Farner parted company with Don and Mel years ago only to reunite for the Bosnia concerts in 1998...Right now Don, Mel and their band tour under the name of Grand Funk Railroad...whereas Mark, who was the brains and the talent of the whole thing can't use the name Grand Funk...only "formerly of Grand Funk"..what a kick in the ass for Mark...without him GFR would have never been the great band that they were.
@frasierdf I could be your bass player!!!!!!!! I love metal, but GFR are the KINGS!!!! Only a bass drum and a lot of ATTITUDE!!!!! Greetings from Mexico!!!
Are there any REALLY GOOD GFR tribute bands around? If so, I'd love to see some vids with them in it. ESPECIALLY doing this song. If anybody does do a tribute to GFR, they should have the same energy level as GFR otherwise, it would just be a waist of time, because that is one of the outstanding attributes of GFR!!
Actually when gfr presented this song to the record company to be produced, the record company could not publish the word "cunt" on the cover but did after the word was read backwards and printed. Best performance by The Don Brewer!!!
Cream never did what GFR did, gold record in less than 3mon, 10 platinum albums,10 top 40 hits sold out shea stadium faster than the Beatles, up staged led zeppelin,
@yucchhiiowwee Yes , There is the " Back City Rockers " A Japanese Band , and they are very good ! They have a bunch of videos of them doing Grand Funk songs.. And they do T.N.U.C. But the one I was impressed with is Black Licorice.. Watch a few videos , They are fun.
Fair exchange: put Grand Funk in the Hall Of Fame, take out ABBA, Lovin Spoonful, Rascals, Mamas & The Papas, and you got a deal. People talk about Madonna all the time, but I do believe she belongs in. She redefined pop culture as we know it, so give her that much. Too bad she don`t rock like this!!!
Farner still gets it, see him every year up here. Lives here in Northern Mich.
What a great presence on stage!!
the sky wasn't even the limit for these guys. truly one of the greatest bands that ever was and ever will be.
GFR was my 1st concert in 1970.I was a mere 12 yrs old and a drum student since I was six filled with glorious anticipation of seeing a real live "rock band." I always come back to this one.energy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!better than todays "the world sucks" vibe. even though it does.you can forget it for a few minutes with this.
I really like this alot! I dont think anyone could rock this hard today. Its all a bunch of Lame Chords. Theses guys had it!UL.
Don Brewer is the most "FUN" drummmer in rock and roll...he loves to play and it shows
thank you Don!!!!
My cousin used to go to the school with the band and Mark Farner was a very good friend of his. I was along for the ride at the backstage parties
@frasierdf sounds like you were born to late because YES! this is 1 of the Greatest BANDS of all time! BADASS!
Great Classic GFRxR video from The Fabulous Forum 1974. Thanks for posting cho!
don is the sole reason i respect music the way i do these days. here's to the most underrated musician ever in rock and roll; don brewer
No the whole band, you can't say that and not put mark farner in that statement, let's be real
One of my favorites !!! Wish they would get together for a Reunion.

Mel Schaucher inspired me at a very young age to dump guitar and devote my life to bass. 35 years later Im still at it.
I wish it was released in DVD quality.. I would cry for it.. Or maybe a remastered version.. I wish nothing more in my life .. period
@gcm2645 if you're talking about this vid, it's LA, not Tokyo. I've had this show for almost 20 years! I know there's a Tokyo show from like 83 with Dennis Bellinger on bass...parts of it were on the boxed set.

donnie and bonzo ....they did it all with one bass drum !!!!!!!!
awsome
dg0557: Last I heard he was still living in his farm in Petoskey, Michigan. I still wish they would put personal differences aside and get back together as the original Grand Funk. Best kick ass band of all time.
Anybody remember the movie "HEAVY METAL"???? Grand Funk Railroad had a song on there called "QUEEN BEE"! It's also on their lp "GRAND FUNK LIVES!!!!!"
I stand corrected. What's ten years.....
Still one the best collections of talent of all time, the original three.
Is Mark back on his Michican farm?
@47tooter Hey hey, I appreciate that. I'm going to check that out for sure! Thanks. And just so you know, GFR was the very first concert I ever went to in either 1973 or 74 during the shinin' on tour. Wet willie band opened for them.

Don Brewer is The King. This was a great band with Mark Farner! Search PackedFunk for more GFRxR.
Speedy & powerful...perfect. Thanks for posting.

I don't use the word "dynamite'" very often, but this is simply phenomenal.
Don Brewer is the most underated drummer in rock & roll history.
I wish I had Don's hair, Mel's sweet mustache, and Mark's moves!!
And all the money Terry knight stole from them
Bewer is THE MAN!!!! He has one of the fastest triplets in the world!!!!
Energy dudes this is the most important thing in music, so who says that this drummer is bad, is an ignorant
THE 3 B`s Brewer,baker&bonham
Totaly ROCKS this one
"The bong rattling bass of Mel Sherer"-Homer Simpson
the wild shirtless lyrics of mark farner,,the bong rattling bass of mel schacer,,the competent drumming of don brewer..
such good grand funk and roll.
This band is one of the main reasons I became a musician
T.N.U.C., If they spelled it correct it would have never made it on the album, it is a great song. Long live GRAND FUNK!!!!
@DsveysNavy I believe its their 1974 tour in L.A. , its just like their " caught in the act " live album,,,try it,, its really good.
I don't remember there being any energy drinks back them...These guys were the very BEST !!! So good in fact they opened up for Led Zepplin(also a great band) and were booed when GFR left the stage.

The bong-rattling bass of Mel Shocker? The competent drum work of Don Brewer?

¡Esto es ritmo y comunicacion !
The albums have been re-issued as 24 bit remasters, worth revisiting
@frasierdf I could be your bass player!!!!!!!! I love metal, but GFR are the KINGS!!!! Only a bass drum and a lot of ATTITUDE!!!!! Greetings from Mexico!!!
me encanta esa rola !!!!!!!

greatest drummer ever so under-rated : (
Gotta love Paul Gilbert. Amazing guitarist and a very nice guy.
Who?
There's no Paul Gilbert on that stage
don brewer such an amazing performance...
@tjrtherocksponge I gotta tell ya...Donny Brewer is STILL an animal on the drums. He does an awesome solo that'll knock your socks off
Great song! What does t.n.u.c. stand for? Is it something else spelled backwards?
Amen.....nowadays they are just Grand Funk Revisited.
Actually when gfr presented this song to the record company to be produced, the record company could not publish the word "cunt" on the cover but did after the word was read backwards and printed. Best performance by The Don Brewer!!!
Feel love Grand Funk!
Funny how Mel started off with the wrong bass line! Love when that happens :)
I wish i was as good as him on the drums but unfortunately i'm just starting out i'm a big fan of his!!! :)
"The BONG rattling BASS of Mel Sherer" -Homer Simpson
Don did a TNUC on Mark. I can't believe a friend would do a friend what Don did to Mark.
Leave It To Brewer! Best Caucasian Afro in the biz! :-)
fantastic
T.N.U.C. is spelled backwards. Search PackedFunk for more GFRxR.
It's good to see the afro is largely in tact these days.
hahahah at mel's bong rattling bass, perfect description sagn
I think you overlooked the Cream, arguably one of the best three piece bands ever with Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker and Eric Clapton.
@DanielGonzalezC I beileve its on both live cds , caught in the act , and live album.
Brewer is a madman!!!! OHH BABY!!
very very great and hotttttttttttttttttt!!!
