The arcade truly was a magical time/experience.
When you found something rare or different that you’d never seen before, and very likely would never see again it was incredible.
I can’t imagine an experience like that with games the way they are now. It was a singular experience, unlike anything I have experienced since.

I went to a local arcade that opened quite recently. It was FULL of people, kids, familly, older people playing on pinball tables, etc. One game took me by surprise, it was a huge panel made of small LED lights forming pixelated, yet very colorfull, retro image. It was a 2P game and the mother and son playing it seemed to have a blast. It was great and impressed me much in the same way you just described it. I think the spirit of the arcade can still live up today.

Yeah I still see it out there which makes me really smile both on the inside and the outside. It's not like it was but the spirit carries on where it can, and I'm glad that it does.

It’s much better experience now though objectively. We remember these days with a nostalgic lens - but we like to forget how 90% of these games were horrible or setup so you’d die in the stupidest ways to spend more tokens

    • @JohnDoe-wq5eu
      @JohnDoe-wq5eu Год назад +1

      @@jjmah7
It's definitely different nowadays when you can just get a ROM/ emulated version with unlimited credits. Yeah there was nothing worse than a cool game that was just a total quarter muncher let alone an awful game that was the exact same way. But it's a lot like movies we only tend to remember the good ones and we totally forget the bad ones. I do think once we are able to push the nostalgia out of our eyes/minds we can see a little more clearly.
But the problem is for some it's very difficult. I know I have gone back and revisited a lot of games that I absolutely loved as a kid or young adult that I can't stand now. I would say you're right about 10% are still absolutely amazing. Many are just a novelty and fun for maybe one full playthrough but most aren't.

    • @jjmah7

@@JohnDoe-wq5eu YES! Absolutely! I got a raspberry pi emulator a few years ago that had like literally every game ever: Nintendo, sega, Neo geo, etc…and I gotta say, outside if the hands down classics, a lot of these older games were just so boring to me haha

Dear GAWD, I miss the arcades... Kids today will never understand what it meant or feel that sensation of the noise washing over you, your eyes darting from cabinet to cabinet & inserting that coin & playing something that just couldn't be done at home... It was an amazing experience.
Nice video SLX, more of these please... bonus points for using the phrase "rare as rocking-horse shit"... confirming my subscribing to you was utterly justified.

@Kefla Arcade games exist, sure, but have you noticed that most have late 2000s graphics even in 2023? There's nothing that totally pushes the boundaries, with a quality that is totally unavailable at home. I would be surprised if most arcade games even today run as high as 1080p, much less have graphics that can blow away someone who has a modern-gen (or even last-gen) console or decently powerful computer.

Another great video SLX, so thanks again, as I grew up in the 70's, 80's so arcades were my church growing up in Los Angeles. While I lived in arcades when I got the chance, there are still tons of games I never saw, or ones just lost to my memories due to time passing. While I never got to see the 2 screen Rastan game, I was lucky enough to see a few of the 3 screen ones, and they were a sight to behold(Darius & Ninja Warriors). Darius was my favorite of the two, as the field of vision was insane, but the level of depth was even better.

I love Fantasy Zone II on the SMS. I think it has some of the nicest background art of any game on the Master System. As you learn your route and start to find the hidden secrets it becomes easier... the warp gates link together in a simple loop so it's not as mazelike as it seems at first. You do need to always know the shortest route to a shop that sells an engine, because if you're caught without an engine upgrade you won't live long.
The remake is great too, but so different it's really a whole new sequel.

I have dreams to this day of finding sequels to random arcade game at the local arcade (which has not been open for over a decade). I think the most common one I have is finding a sequel to TMNT, which was 6 player like X-men. Shredder's Revenge was a literal dream come true for me, though in my dreams Venus was a playable turtle. I also dreamed a lot of non existent pinball games, like Sonic or Zelda. Those too are kind of real now, since there's a variety of high quality Visual Pinball creations based on those (and just about anything else you can think of).

Quite surprised to see a mention about Power Instinct: the second chapter was quite popular in my homeland (Italy), but the "Groove On Fight" chapter was a half disaster in my opinion. The guys at Atlus tried to do something different but...man, that was way too different: gameplay, style and colours belong to a totally different series! In fact, the real comeback of Power Instinct was "Matrimelee" on the Neo Geo. (IMHO)

Awesome list of games. I can see a progression with some of the action/adventure games you covered, whereas the originals were strictly side scrollers (Robocop and Rastan) the sequels expanded into beat em ups likely in response to that genre showing up around that time, Golden Axe, Final Fight, Double Dragon, TMNT etc...
Turbo Outrun really captured the rivalry of those 2 supercars at the time, the Ferrari F40 and the Porsche 959. Sega likely didn't acquire the licenses for either of these brands...😂

oh man, TRUXTON 2! I did play a little bit of it in MAME I remember EGM saying when it was released it was huge in Japanese arcades! it is definitely a tough shmup. For PC fans, Bitwave has been porting several of Toaplan's other great arcade shmups (including the original truxton) so I can only imagine it's a matter of time before they get to bring the sequel to PC as well!

    6:00, Turbo up!
    7:27, a huge glow-up.
11:53, Sega made a sequel to Atari's game?
16:00, really reminds me of Battle Garegga.
18:15, XD That's one way to describe it.

Sega Lord X, originally Sega released 2 different versions of Super Hang-on at the same time being the Sit-On arcade (Easy course) and the Stand-Up arcade (Hard course). As the Sit-On was harder to steer (Easy course) each stage starts with easy corners and the corners become harder (tighter) towards the end of the stage, every stage is designed like this... The Stand-Up which was just the handlebars and was easier to operate did the reverse for each stage, stages started with harder corners going into easier corners towards the end of the stage. Generally the Stand-Up is a harder version to play any way.
The Sega Megadrive version is based on the Sit-On easy course, the Atari ST and Amiga versions are based on the Stand-Up hard course.
The Xbox 360 version contains both versions of the arcade and can be selected via the options as to which one you'll play.

I hope you talk about OutRunners, that is a wonderful arcade game. Sadly SEGA never released a home port that was even close to the arcade. Why sega keeps so many of their classic arcade games locked away I'll never understand, some might be licensed issues, but most can be worked on around. I'll love of they released a true arcade collection of their older titles. From the 2D scalers to the newer on 3D games. Heck, they could release them in collection packs and fans would love to buy them all.

Operation Wolf had a sequel called Operation Thunderbolt. While Wolf had one player with one uzi, Thunderbolt had two uzi’s, letting you play with a friend. Or if you were like me, I’d just play both players using both uzi’s Rambo style lol
