Preach! I agree with so much here, especially with Pelikan needing to bring the creativity back into their sub-m1000 lines. It really feels like the bigger companies have been phoning it in lately. I'm glad to see the 743 available in a US exclusive color, but it looks different in every photo I've seen.
This is a great video idea! I sort of knew of all these pens just scrolling social media, but it's nice to have them all in one place and any I missed.
This was a fun video. I agree with you that Sailor prices are hard to swallow, especially for those of us who are used to getting them for less. And their new releases are all mulitple variations on color blocking, so it has this "why not just wait for the next one?" feel to it. My Sailor pens are among my favorites, but I'm glad I accumulated several before the prices increased. I have this impression that they're increasing prices because they can in the face of increasing popularity and interest in this hobby, and as long as people keep buying, they'll continue to raise their prices. (Did you see the prices on the new Yoseka exclusives? I love Yoseka and buy from them often, but yikes!) ,Personal tastes do vary and I always pass on rose gold, so I guess that saves me some money. Right now, I'm trying to resist the TWSBI Mini in Grape. I don't need it, as the Mini I have works great, but I do want it. Anything over about $30 deserves some thought in my world. Overall, you make a good point -- we are being manipulated with all these linited and special editions, and it's important to think about FOMO and not buy every shiny thing.
I didn’t even think of the Yoseka Sailor; I think I was so shocked by the pricing I blocked it out. Yeeesh. I guess it’s the “Sailor Tax” we are required to pay here in the states. It’s kind of ridiculous that we have a global economy, yet we don’t get the same pricing as the Asian market special editions. Okay, I’m going to be like Elsa and let it go since it’s not changing anytime soon. 😖
Very interesting video. I kept waiting on you to tie up your hair into side buns, so you'd look like Princess Leia in one of those movies. Fountain pens I feel is now suffering from what every popular thing suffers from; pushing product. I find Leonard is extremely guilty of this. Leonardo drops a new pen, new limited edition every month. And primary manipulation and Brooks resins are everywhere. I am so glad that months, months ago when I thought they looked cool, I didn't buy it.
I didn't even think that Leonardo was doing the same thing with the number of pens they dropped...I guess I stopped paying attention after I got my custom 2 years ago out of Brook's Abalone. I just haven't been interested since you can't pick the exact one you want and knowing that you can send them rods and they'll make a pen for you. But your sentiments make perfect sense.
@@ferociousnprettypens Some people are just in love with independent makers. But I think they are just the new version of pen kits. May be I am wrong, but I think these makers are getting the rods, turning them, and adding a JoWo nib. They are not really making anything. Every couple of months Endless pens has some new Leo collab dropping. Last year, I kept seeing all these Leo Korean pens.
The Safari was my first fountain pen about a decade or so ago, but outside of the matte Dark Lilac or the matte Petrol, it's just not a pen I get excited about when special editions come out. I really want the TWSBI Diamond Mini and I'll probably be buying it as purple is my favorite color.
Also, I'm not buying a pen over $300. I just can't justify it, probably because I know the once I start, that budget will get higher and higher, but I'm the only person in my family who's into pens and I can already see my "expensive" gold nib pens ending up in the Goodwill when I pass because no one in my family knows the value of fountain pens.
LOL Gen, my pens will probably end up a Goodwill, too. HAH. That really got me. (Drying eyes from laughing so hard.) Luckily I've gotten my friends into FPs, so if anything happens to me, they know what to do with the spensive ones. But I hear you. I hope you got your Mini and you filled it with something amazing!
I love this video! Purple is so my jam. I pre-ordered the TWSBI, but I resisted the Leonardo - I have been on a fountain pen shopping spree since December.
I think Pelikan has released a Green demonstrator M800 some years ago. Apple Green I think it was called. Anyways, it was quite popular. Looks like that is the play. Just bring back what was popular. May be it's just with the Germans since Lamy released the Petrol and Dark Lilac.
If I had the previous release, I’d be a bit miffed they re-released a green m800. Especially if I bought it 2nd hand for more. I think these folks forget that there’s a rainbow of colors to choose from. 🤦🏻♀️
@@ferociousnprettypens It was the Transparent Green M800 from 2015. AKA the Green Ocean. May be this version is called Apple Green. But yeah, 2015. Imagine if Pelikan dropped a Transparent Eggplant M800, or I think a Cloudy Black. That would be gone in a flash. Or Indigo?
This was an excellent idea! And I get your thoughts on a $1295 acrylic pen - I think that everytime I see a „high-end“ demonstrator. Why would I pay €680 for an acrylic Aurora demonstrator? I admit, I adore Aurora pens, but I won’t pay that much for „plastic“.
I also could not resist the Endless Pens Leonardo. I’ve been craving a purple pen and have been interested in Leonardo’s in house gold nib. It’s like they were spying on my browser history. How to decide what purple goes in first. I am thinking KWZ Gummyberry.
Love this idea! I was a little surprised to find that we have purchased the a me pens from this list. 😮 I ordered the al-stars the day that Cult Pens announced they were available for pre-order. The purple leonardo MZG blew my pen budget for months but I think I would regret not getting that pen. Like you, I'm not into the cigar shape, and I don't like green (This is reflected in my green ink collection. I have 2; a light and a dark.) so those didn't appeal to me. The 1295 pen...!?!?!???!! I did not realize it was so expensive. That is ridiculous. 😳
Yay I love an anti-haul! 😅 I am one of the people who jumped on the Pilot Custom 743. It’s a really pretty teal, definitely has some blue undertones. But if the shape’s not your thing, then it’s totally unnecessary. LOL I completely agree on the Pelikan thing - it’s screaming golfing in the 1980’s to me. 🤣 Pass for me!
Your reaction to the 743 is the same as mine! I really can’t tell if there is a bit of blue in that green or some funny business was done to the photo.
TWSBI Persian Green is not a thing! I was dying! 🤣😂🤣 Totally with you on so many of of these! The Safaris, the Pilot, the Pelikan M800 - I love my 805s but see nothing appealing about that green demonstrator.🤷🏻♀️ Love Sailor PG's but, even in colors that are my jam (purples, teals) it's exhausting trying to keep up with the multitude of special & limited releases they're constantly coming out with. I have a few PGs that I love but I'm more prudent when it comes to which ones I buy. It's just too much.🙄
Glad you got a laugh out of the non-Persian Persian green. 🤣 I guess we’re pen twins with our tastes. 😂 100% agree on the release cadence being too much. It limits what I’m willing to spend. 🤷🏻♀️
Lamy phoned it in with both of those collections since they literally just gave them a minor tweak from previous collections, nothing new at all. I fall for Twsbi every time, I can't help myself, and I like the mini so yeah, bad me LOL and I may be one of the few people who just isn't that much into Sailor, idk what it is, but my brain just resists buying these pens.
Omg. I thought the saying was “dialed it in” and it’s phoned it in. 🤦🏻♀️bahahaha. I think there are others that just aren’t into Sailor or they’re not excited by the “flavors” available in their regions. Some of the Japanese editions turn my head, but they get expensive and are a pain to get unless PenSachi posts them. So…I don’t think you’re alone.
@@ferociousnprettypens I do agree that the PG shape of the Sailors is better than the cigar, which is weird since I don’t mind the shape in other brands. Yeah, makes total sense right? 😂
You are definitely not alone in not being a fan of cigar shape pens. Nope. I don't like 🙅🏼♀️ This is a very interesting video, and about a topic which sparked a similar conversation from me in someone else's video. Last week, I was trying like hell to find some Twsbis I had missed out on. 1 was before I was interested in fountain pens, and the other was from last year. It makes me so angry that if they are to be found, there is such a ridiculous mark up because they're "Limited Edition." I HATE Limited Edition. With every fiber of my being. It triggers the FOMO in people. Not because you have to have it because "everyone" else does, but because when they're gone, they're gone. Then there can be a 200% mark up (or MORE: do NOT even get me started on the Pelikan M600 you'd have to sell a kidney, a pinky toe, a lobe of your lung and liver, AND your friggen heart to afford), and no one can do a damn thing about it. Of course, there's 3 LE pens from different companies I really want right now. The money just isn't there, though. So I know I'll be stuck not having the colors I want (2 of which would be my 1st of those pens), and probably never be able to find them after the fact, or at a price I can afford (I know, first world problems). These pen companies know what they're doing. It kind of puts me off pens, if I'm being honest. I have what I'm calling 'Limited Edition release fatigue' 😮💨 It's fricken exhausting. Thanks for having this honest conversation! I think more people need to.
Yay! Glad I'm not alone on the cigar shape. I really like the phrase "LE Release Fatigue," it's so accurate! A few years ago, there was a black cat Sailor PG full size for a stationary shop in Japan I wanted to buy; it sold out and ended up on the 2ndary mkt for double the price. I got really miffed, and it's put me off of on all LE's since then. If I can't get my hands on something because my wallet can't handle it or it sells out quickly, I'd rather not line someone's wallet jacking up the price like that...so I act like Elsa and just let it go. If it's meant to be, I'll come across it someday. IDK if that's realistic, but it's what I'm going with.
Why do you hate green pens!?!? 🤣🤣 I am gonna rag on you the next green (teal included) pen you buy 😆 Lamy can make orange inks no one asked about but can't recreate Dark Lilac and they can make colored 2000 for everyone but choose not to - Proves that no one is home at Lamy. Pelikan's choices the last 2-3 years is making me think the Lamy people are running Pelikan. No words for Sailor as their LE prices in the US are a good bit more than the LE pens in Japan that also have custom nib imprints and custom finials we never get ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Fun video and appreciate the honesty.
