Thanks for the video. I've been watching in instalments over several breakfasts and decided to finish this one before I go to bed. I shared your thinking with the bell, but we have to have one here, and I realised that when I ring about 20- 50m away from pedestrians (and horses, we have those occasionally) they generally are happy enough. Some even thanked me specifically because it gave them time to get their kids/dog to safety before I passed. Cool to see these different types of things. And being able to have nice conversations with random people when cycling. Never happens when driving :)
Two Wheel Cruise Yeah I think a hub gear system with a chain is better but not better enough, unless you have a full chain case on an upright bike. And it’s true that EV drivers tend to chat while charging. But never talked to the car next to me at a red light :) And when I had a petrol scooter, no one ever talked to me. At 6:59 you pointed out the flood barrier control embankment engineering, yes that is exactly what they are for. Fun fact: the Japanese have been using this form of flood control since the mid 1500’s, Takeda Shingen is said to have started these sorts of river control embankments in order to stabilize the Kai and Shinano provinces (especially around the Kawanakajima Plain) during the warring periods of the Sengoku Jidai.

I want to go cycling in Japan someday so commuting videos like yours is really great to watch to get a feel of the atmosphere!
Thanks for the video. A couple points of interest... 1- bathrooms are abundant along the river and bike trails, as well as with bicycle rest stops (I saw one that actually had nice showers and a small cafe, near Isesaki), however, public urination is also very common and it’s not unusual to see guys just going along the side of the road. I once saw a father and his young son, standing side-by-side, relieving themselves at the side of a parking lot. If those options don’t work for you, the conbinis have very nice restrooms with “washlets”. 2- As you mentioned the high school kids are probably the biggest danger to a cyclist. Most of them totally disregard the rules. Senior citizens on mamacharis are dangerous too, mostly because they love to ride down the wrong side of the road. 3- I love dogs and the people walking them usually do a good job keeping them close by, but I missed a KOM by 1 second, two weeks ago, because a man standing on one side of the trail allowed his leashed-dog to cross to the other side to do his business. The leash was blocking the entire width of the trail, only a couple meters before the endpoint. I shouted out “sumimasen” a number of times, but he was oblivious. That 10km KOM was 4 years old. I was not happy to have put in all that work, just to be thwarted by a man and his dog. 4-Do you ever encounter any animals on the trails? I regularly see foxes, martens, tanukis, lots of cats (wild and domesticated), and occasionally, wild boars! One ran across the trail two days ago and he was large and fast. I also see civets, snakes and lots of frogs. In the mountains, I’ve encountered large groups of monkeys, deer, a bear and some wild boars.
Wow, a shower??? And wild boars?? Sounds like you got more action going on at your river path. I've had a couple koms interrupted by people walking in the center of the path / dogs as well.. well now you know you have the fitness to get it.. just need some luck now lol

I commuted to work at 12 AM for around 10 years winter and summer. It was only just over 3 miles unfortunately, but the main thing was dealing with the drunks on the weekends(collage town). I used my cycling jacket, toe covers, gortex helmet cover, lobster gloves, Breath face cover(to help with breathing the below freezing air), and sometimes a pair of snowboarding pants that had zippers on the outside of the legs. I have a special mount(hand made) for a strong (over 900 lm) flash light that attached to the arrow bars, a set of rear brake light flashers, and a lot of 3M reflective tape for passive visibility. Riding at night is very exhilarating(feels like you are going twice as fast), and I always felt better going into work on the bike. People kept asking if I owned a car though...........
Yea I witnessed a pick up tuck come around a corner and plow into 4 parked cars. This was while going into work. Instead of stopping the "guy" just floored it and kept ripping through the cars. It happened in front of another bar, I turned into a parking lot to put some cars between me and the truck. I called the police when I got to work but could not see the license plate number. Only 10% of people(U.S.) on the road will give you trouble in my experience. I don't know if adding more biking trails will make things better or worse. Most of my riding was on the road though.
I did watch the whole video!☺️ And I loved it. I'm a bike commuter myself. I do about 22 miles round trip in El Paso, TX. Before moving here 8 years ago, I commuted in Atlanta, GA from 1996 to 2011. It's funny to me what you said about buying more bikes because I own 15 bikes and they're all for me, no wife here😂
Nice route you have, loved the country side and especially the river route, I have the same privilege here as well. I do commuting with bicycle normally although now been working remote due to the circumstances. That truck was scary as the driver probably can't see you if you appeared in his dead angle. I share similar experiences and opinions e.g. using the bell, I think a vocal information that you are passing behind from the left or right side etc is better and usually met by a reply "thank you" .
I am Japanese live in Canada. (14 years) My wife is Filipino and we speak English each other. When you said neither of us is native.. that reminds me of myself. I miss Japan I used to bike to school back in the days.
The US is changing a bit a lot of old rail lines that are no longer used are being turn into Multiuse trails for people to walk and bike on. I live in the area of Norfolk Virginia and right now its a pain for me to get over into the Downtown area cuz there are only 2 ways I can take a ferry or I can cross a mounting or a bridge that isnt that wide really only for people to walk over. All the other ways I have to use a car. Now they plan to reuse the train tracks for a path over to there for a total of 20 miles of paths on the longest path so Suffolk area where I live closer to all the way to Virginia Beach where I work. Then there are also other paths that branch off that go further into downtown Norfolk to get to the ship yards and stuff like what most people in Va go for work. They also want to do a path up to the DC area so that would be really nice. I think a lot of people in the US are starting to see that riding bikes is a better way to get around its just we are still lacking over all in a safe way to get around.
@@TwoWheelCruise Please make some maintenance videos in the future...🙏🙏 I just got my front wheel punctured today morning...😫😫 It's been just two weeks since I bought my bike.
Love the different stuff you get to see on a simple ride back home. I've mentioned before how much I love Japan, yeah, the short daylight each day would not be a problem for me at least. Especially here I run from the sun, hitting 39° in couple days it sucks!! Lol Oh And the food/eating in your videos is always great to see! Wow I noticed that line of cars, traffic time, rush hour there too. Riding around Japan on my road bike and eating yep on my Bucket list! :-) :-)
Always something new each day 🙂 it's getting pretty hot here lately.. I guess it's nice for riding home for the sun to set early, but it can be demotivating for it to be dark when you get home
Love watching your videos! Looking forward to your video on which bike is best for commuting.. I've been wanting to get a road bike but the gravel bikes look interesting too.
Where will you be storing 5 new bikes? I gotta see that video! Also, I noticed that in your "event day" video, you breezed right by the Campy booth in a blur, never saying a word. Will they be throwing you out of Italy? LOL. Thank for the vid. The Adventure Continues....
That's future Cruise's problem lol.. I ran out of time that day, so didn't get to go over everything.. let's keep that on the hush side while I'm in Italy lol
Yes, the US is woefully lacking in bicycle friendly infrastructure. It pretty much does not exist. The small "city" that I live in recently put in bike lanes on a local road. The drivers were so confused they had to remove the bike lanes. Sad. Your commute looks pretty nice.
Your microphone is incredible. I don't know how fast you were riding at the start but there is almost zero wind noise and you could actually hear the sound of the wind in the grass but it should have been completely obscured.
Nice way home riding video. Really love the scenery on the river path on the dusk time. Singlespeed ftw for commuting less maintenance, you can use your track bike(or convert any bike to singlespeed) and wear fencing mask to fight against those flies. I watch the whole video XD
You mentioned that you dont need a big lock in Japan. Is Bike theft there no big deal? Here in Germany you cant ride an expensive bike in the city because it would get stolen immediately. I even had a bike stolen from my own garden. I was 5 minutes in the House and the bike was gone. Very frustrating. Edit: if you dont like Schwalbe you should try continental tyres. Not that expensive and good quality. I recently switched from Schwalbe to continental and it is a really big difference.
Still envious of the lock situation in Japan. Considering i have to take a two relativily heavy locks everywhere here in Berlin, Germany. Actually the main reason i do not commuter every day with my cyclocrossbike. Japan is anyway kind of a reminder of my Childhood. No real crimerate, everythink works and people are polite and friendly.
Would definitely be a lot more work to have to bring big locks everyday.. Japan is slowly getting more dangerous.. curious to see how it will be in 10 years
Enjoyed the ride along. Always loved Japan and it's culture. Also would love to see anything to do with their railway system as I work in that sector here in Australia. Any plans while you're in Italy to tackle any of the big mountain climbs if you get the chance?

Riding at night is very exhilarating(feels like you are going twice as fast), and I always felt better going into work on the bike. People kept asking if I owned a car though...........
Yikes, that sounds really dangerous. Fortunately drunk driving is very rare in Japan..
Loved playing this whole video in the background as I work on my engineering drawings and designs. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it 🙂
I did watch the whole video!☺️ And I loved it. I'm a bike commuter myself. I do about 22 miles round trip in El Paso, TX. Before moving here 8 years ago, I commuted in Atlanta, GA from 1996 to 2011. It's funny to me what you said about buying more bikes because I own 15 bikes and they're all for me, no wife here😂
Thanks! That's a pretty good collection! I'll get pretty close by the end of this year I think.. lol
(14 years)
My wife is Filipino and we speak English each other. When you said neither of us is native.. that reminds me of myself.
I miss Japan I used to bike to school back in the days.
Yes, i saw this video till end. And i dont regret
Yeah, we've got a pretty big rail to trail network in Michigan. They can do a lot to help, but need to be designed well
Great video! Love your channel :) Thanks!
Thanks julie!
Nice ride. I watched the whole clip.
Thanks! 🙂
*20 minutes late, here to support you until 1mil subs✋*
Thanks man! Appreciate it!
Nice footage and wonderful views
.
I love watching videos on Two Wheel Cruise
.
Super !
Thanks man! 🙂
At last, the long awaited video😎😎
No flats this time 🙏
@@TwoWheelCruise Please make some maintenance videos in the future...🙏🙏 I just got my front wheel punctured today morning...😫😫 It's been just two weeks since I bought my bike.
It's on my list!
@@TwoWheelCruise Thank you.
Having 266 likes and no dislike shows how well you integrated into the ultra-polite Japanese community.
Haha I was extra polite in this video..
excellent presentation. thanks
You inspire me to explore my city :)
Do it! :)
Love it, greetings from Germany
Thanks man!
Another great video, glad to see you didn't get any flats this time :D
Thanks! I was crossing my fingers the whole way haha
I guess it's nice for riding home for the sun to set early, but it can be demotivating for it to be dark when you get home
damn 54 minutes passed and didn't notice ,niceeee video
Love watching your videos! Looking forward to your video on which bike is best for commuting.. I've been wanting to get a road bike but the gravel bikes look interesting too.
Thanks! Best to go with the gravel bike unless you plan on racing or climbing a lot
Good narratives, thanks for sharing. Yeah, post ride meal?😁
Thanks! Next time! 😉
Good day, can you make a video regarding buying used road bikes in Japan. And also how to register a used bike. :)
Thanks for the ideas, I'll add them to my list!
Love Japan, thanks
Yes, the US is woefully lacking in bicycle friendly infrastructure. It pretty much does not exist. The small "city" that I live in recently put in bike lanes on a local road. The drivers were so confused they had to remove the bike lanes. Sad. Your commute looks pretty nice.
wow, that's pretty bad :/
i might be mistaken, but i think those are anti-tank thingies there at 07:00
cheers from germany, great content!
i think they are to control the tide , ive seen them in portugal but also could be mistaken
@@hughmungus3822 you are probably right...
sun sets early in summer but rises like 4:30AM or something, some weird time zone configuration.
Yep 🙄🙄🙄
here in Colombia the sun sets at 6:30 pm and rises at 6:00 am
Your microphone is incredible. I don't know how fast you were riding at the start but there is almost zero wind noise and you could actually hear the sound of the wind in the grass but it should have been completely obscured.
I've grown to love this mic..
Nice way home riding video. Really love the scenery on the river path on the dusk time.
Singlespeed ftw for commuting less maintenance, you can use your track bike(or convert any bike to singlespeed) and wear fencing mask to fight against those flies. I watch the whole video XD
I sometimes use my single speed fixed gear to commute. The low maintenance is great 😁
Lol, I might just try the standard masks they use here in Japan
@@TwoWheelCruise I forgot to ask, is your work place at urban non commercial area? it's kinda quite which is good.
It's a mix, but there is some busy section very close
You mentioned that you dont need a big lock in Japan. Is Bike theft there no big deal? Here in Germany you cant ride an expensive bike in the city because it would get stolen immediately. I even had a bike stolen from my own garden. I was 5 minutes in the House and the bike was gone. Very frustrating.
Edit: if you dont like Schwalbe you should try continental tyres. Not that expensive and good quality. I recently switched from Schwalbe to continental and it is a really big difference.
There is high theft, but mainly with low end bikes that are not locked at all.
I love the continental gatorskins and schwalbe marathons
Nice
38:36 - Sakura trees mentioned
Here's the link to where he rides through the same area while in bloom

Michigan lies less on more on similar latitude as Hokkaido, place where I'm living I can compare to northernmost tip of Sachalin :D
Thanks! I made one video about bikes on trains in Japan. I hope I get to try some of the big climbs here, but it depends on my work schedule
What is your family like back in the US? Also has do they feel about your life in Japan?
Very different from me 😅 maybe a good talking point for a future video
Another great video. It’s a beautiful place and your videos give me a great perspective on the lifestyle of the Japanese. I’m interested to know what average speed you manage over the 20km commute?
It's all on strava.. usually about 25km/hr, faster if I go hard
Hi TWC! New to the channel and I absolutely love your content! I wish I could commute like that every day to work too, but the cyclist accident rate is really high in my country so it's mostly reserved for recreation purposes only.
btw where's that "wife's dinner" that you promised?! HAHA kudos to both of you!
Haha sorry man, wife's dinner appears in many other videos though ;)
