  • What a pleasant surprise!
If you're looking for a beautiful and powerful new movie, then AV Rockwell's A Thousand and One (2023) is definitely worth putting on your Watchlist.
In this movie, Teyana Taylor puts in a powerhouse performance that has potential to earn her some awards nominations come the end of year! I was moved in so many ways by this film, but in this review I break down the many strengths of this film and why I believe it's one of the best of 2023 so far.

Two things I forgot to mention.
    1. I loved the subversion of the expectations on step father portrayal in this. I'm so glad his character played out the way he did. Brilliant stuff.
    2. I wish I could have gone into how much each shot really meant but here's the Letterboxd review which may give you a bit more of my thoughts letterboxd.com/filmexpress/film/a-thousand-and-one/

So happy you loved this one. Caught this at Sundance and it was a homerun!

Oh wow I'm so jealous you saw this in a festival setting. I always feel like I love films more when I see them at TIFF.

Being a child is hard. Harder for some than others. This beautiful film brilliantly portrays the universal struggle of love and family and growing up

I TOTALLY agree! I had some of the same thoughts in my review. I remember being on the fence when this popped up at Sundance, but it honestly blew me away.
The performances were so impactful, especially from Teyana Taylor. I also agree with some of the directing influences you mentioned.
So happy to know you had a chance to see this, and that we're on the same page with this one. 👌👌👌

Isn't it great when us harsher critics find a gem of a film we unanimously agree on? Thanks so much for watching and sharing your thoughts man. I think the film was on my radar ever since I first saw your review actually! I'm glad it lived up to the hype. Teyana Taylor completely rocked me with this one. What did you make of the final shot?

@@filmexpressreviews Ah, gotcha! Didn't realize you had seen that review, but I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I was also on the fence about the final shot. I appreciate ambiguity, and I "get" the ending, but there was also a slight disconnect there for me as well. 👌👌👌

In reference to the oscar bait stuff it felt to me as if Rockwell was attempting to challenge those oscar bait norms and actively navigate it without hitting it, like curving around a straight road.

I can see what you mean there. I could agree too. It definitely tried to be unconventional as often as it could which is a big compliment.

Something similar happened to my cousin and her son. He didn't learn the truth until she was dead and his "father" ws married to a woman who knew nothing about him. So the ending doesn't seeem unrealistic to me.

The final shot works for a lot of Black women. Because Ines gets a second chance at life. And she gets to put herself first. For the first time. A lot of people didn't get the ending and its because we are not used to seeing Black women get a happy ending. I get the confusion.
