Turkey has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 34 times since its debut in 1975. Since the introduction of the semi-finals in 2004, Turkey has only failed to qualify for the final once, in 2011. Turkey won the contest once in 2003, and hosted the 2004 contest in Istanbul.
Turkey finished last on its debut at the contest in 1975, and went on to finish last with nul points in 1983 and 1987. They reached the top ten for the first time in 1986. Şebnem Paker achieved the country's first top five result in 1997, finishing third with the song "Dinle". The country went on to achieve five more top five placements after the introduction of the free language rule and televoting, with Sertab Erener giving Turkey its first victory in 2003 with the song "Everyway That I Can". Turkey's other top five results are Athena (2004), Kenan Doğulu (2007), Hadise (2009), who all finished fourth, and Manga (2010), who finished second.
The Turkish broadcaster TRT announced in December 2012 that it would not participate in the 2013 contest, citing dissatisfaction with the rules of the competition. 2013 was the first time since 1973 that there was no television broadcast of the Eurovision Song Contest on TRT. The country has not returned to the contest since.

See a pattern? Whenever they chose to sing in English instead of Turkish they would get higher rankings. So many of these songs honestly deserved higher rankings especially Deli by Mor ve Ötesi

I can see that. I doubt Everyway That I Can would've been able to win if it was sung in Turkish. A strong part of its victory was that it presented a song inspired by traditionally Turkish melodies in a manner that appeals to Western audiences, including an elaborate performance and lyrics that they can understand.
I feel like its the same reason 2007 and 2009 placed higher than the other songs.
That said, the Turkish language is beautiful and I have no problem listening to it.
If you are going to say a national and emotional song, it would be more logical to sing it in your own language, but if you are going to say a happy or joyful song, it would be more logical to write it in English and Turkey is a cheerful song, they said it in Turkish, that's why it got a low score, it is the fault of this, it would be better if you search for "TRT", who forced the song to be sung and forced to sing it. I don't have much knowledge.

Türkiye has not participated in Eurovision for a long time due to unfair voting. If Eurovision holds a truly fair election, Türkiye will participate in Eurovision again with the approval of its government 🇹🇷

It's fucked up that only when they started singing in english, they started getting good results
To be fair, they got 3rd place in 1997.
However, you're correct in that their higher placements only resulted from singing in English. Only *ONE* winning song in the 2000s was sung entirely native language in 2007, while Wild Dances in 2004 won with a partial segment in Ukrainian.
It's kind of sad how most winners in the 2000s were sung in English.

It's normal to think that Dinle sounds good to your ears. Because Dinle was written together with linguists and the words were carefully chosen to sound good to foreigners' ears.

Turkey always had some of the best musics. Deserved to win several times. It’s funny to see this videos and realise I still remember some musics from the late 80s and 90s and I was a very young child from Portugal.

Sertap Erener'in kalitesi tartışılmaz; birinciliği de çok çok değerli. Beni üzen ilk dörde giren tüm şarkılar yabancı dilde. Müzikaliteden çok siyasi işlerin döndüğü tırt bir yarışma.
o cok bariz bi gercek ve bunu tum dunya biliyor ama bu yarısmadan cekilmemize sebep olmamalıydı. bizim cekilmemiz de sadece bu sebepten degil :)) bir zevkimiz vardı o da elimizden alındı. avrupadan uzaklasmak, araplasmak icin her sey yapılıyor ve bunu oyle bir yapıyorlar ki.. sonumuza ornekler var

Dum Tek Tek and We Could Be The Same are two of my favourite Eurovision songs of all time. I forgot what incredible songs Turkey would send to Eurovision. I really hope they come back one day.

Turkey was originally relegated from 2003 until EBU reduced the number of relegated countries. Turkey would have missed their first win.
Turkey was really lucky. The EBU should have gotten rid of that stupid rule sooner anyway.

@sexfactor7681 There was a relegation system between 1994 & 2003 (excluding 1993 & 1996). Countries with the lowest average amount of points over the previous 5 contests are relegated from the next. Turkey didn't do that well between 1998 & 2002 & was originally supposed to be relegated from 2003.

56 yılından 96 yılına kadar puanları jüri veriyordu, 97 de televotinge (halk oylaması) geçildi. 2013 de %50 jüri %50 halk oylarına geçildi halende güncel olarak bu var.

@@Orhan_simsekspeak for yourself. Not every country has to win. Cyprus hasn't won a single time since 1981 but they still participate. Just because we couldn't win in 2010 why not participate again?
As a Turk, we had to continue singing our songs in our own language even if we were behind in the competition rankings. I think every nation should sing it in their own language. This is not just a singing competition, but also a program for a country to promote and show itself.
It's a shame that only less than a half of all Turkish songs are on Spotify...

I personally think they deserved a top 3 finish in 2000. I also love their 2002 entry, not the English parts though, the song should've been sung fully in Turkish. The 2000s was definitely their best era. No bad songs and almost all performances were great. In 2013 we lost a major powerhouse 😢

We know us better and we know how the system works so. I miss those days but it always was so obvious that it wasn't just a music contest and for that not being there anymore is fine😏
