  • Learn to split a dataset so that you see output for subgroups separately. You have a scale variable (Income) that you want to examine between males and females (nominal). By default, SPSS includes all of the cases in your data set when you do an analysis. You can split a file then perform a separate analysis for each subgroup, such as considering descriptive statistics or correlation matrices separately between groups. Apply this technique for any analysis using nominal or ordinal grouping data. Split-file processing is a skill for data handling in SPSS.
This video teaches the following commands and techniques:
    Split File
    Organize output by groups
    Analyze all cases
    Correlate
    Frequencies
    Syntax - SPLIT FILE OFF
This series uses the data set demo.sav, included with SPSS.

This was the most helpful video I have watched for comparing groups. It was easy to follow. I can write chapter four of my dissertation and feel confident about the data. I am posting this on social media. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!!

How to find out the frquencies like median, s.d of the likert scale data by splitting overall group into different groups and find the frquencies of each group...Like this group median is ...and s.d is......i am only able to find the individual frequencies but not the group ..hope u understand my question and help me.

I have more than two gender categories. I want to split the file with only male and female participants. How would I be able to do this?

Hi Anita - the simplest solution would be to recode into a new variable with 1 = male, 0 = female, and all others being system missing. You could then use your recoded variable as the split variable for your analysis. Good luck

how do you compare the percentages of a descriptive statistic between the same group after split file?

I want to run a regression analysis for each category of the variable that I split. But SPSS won't let me. Any advice?

Hard to say without seeing the data, but I would suggest to make sure that your new variable is coded as categorical (nominal). If the split is ranges, make sure they are coded as integers (0-5 = 1, 6-10 = 2, 11-15 = 3, etc.) and use the variable labels for the ranges. If you want to run a separate regression for each category, you would need to use the SPLIT FILE command. hope that is helpful.
