Cross-tabulation (CROSSTAB) of Multiple Response Findings in SPSS

  • One survey strategy is to give survey takers a list of items and ask them to identify their “most important” response, which can have only one answer. Then we follow up with a question that presents them with the same list, but this time asks them to “check all that apply”. But using this powerful strategy can create problems for us later. Some people may check one response, or none, or all of the responses. We want to plan ahead for how to treat these multiple response items in SPSS.
We learn how to create a response set that we can cross tabulate with another (yes or no) item. We illustrate the concept using a survey from the fictitious Passagassawakeag River Watershed Alliance, as they ask respondents about their most important use of a river, then ask a “check all that apply” question.
This video uses the CleanRiverMulti.sav dataset.
This video teaches the following commands and techniques:
    Multiple Response
    Define variable Set
    Frequencies
    Crosstabs

Great video! Thank you so much for your help! I am cross tabulating two multiple response questions. I have defined both of them under Analyze > Multiple Response > Define variable sets. When I want to perform a cross tabulation of both multiple response variables, it does not give you the option to select for a chi square test statistic as it does when you cross tabulate non-multiple response variables. Is there any test that can be done to produce a chi square statistic for a cross of two multiple response variables?

That is a good question. I have not run into that. I am going to try to replicate what you have described. Having said that, you may try the Analyze -> Descriptives -> Crosstabs and see if the multiple response item shows up there? There is a legacy-option for chi-square but I doubt that will work. Not a lot of ideas right now, but I will look.

@@ResearchByDesign The multiple response items don't seem to show up under Analyze > Descriptives > Crosstabs as suggested above (unless I'm doing something wrong!). As an alternative, I selected Analyze > Tables > Multiple response sets... creating my two multiple response sets this way. I then created a custom table combining both multiple response sets and selected chi-square under the Test Statistics tab. Does it make sense to do it this way, or am I creating an error somewhere?

4:10 the total number who answered the question on SendInfo is 600 but on the Crosstab, 8:09, the total was 597. Why is that?

Wow...good catch. I don't know off the top of my head, but I may have used a slightly different dataset or maybe there were some missing values? I'll pull up the videos and see if I can figure it out. Thanks
