  • We dive deeper into exploring and summarizing categorical data with SPSS. We review levels of measurement so you can determine what kinds of data you have. Both nominal and ordinal are categorical variables because they each have limited number of distinct categories, but that ordinal data also have a meaningful, underlying order. Using the demo.sav data set, we learn how to get summary descriptive statistics, a bar chart, and a frequency table with the Frequencies command. We learn how to compare averages between categories using the Means command. This will give you a set of tools to examine categorical data and teach you how to think about your first-level analyses depending on the level of your data. You can do data cleaning and data exploration with these tools.
    Each of these examples uses the data set demo.sav, included with SPSS.

    Hallo Sir..thank you for everything especially these nice lecturers you are giving us..all the from German,kindly asking for your help in this;
    A question is; How do you perceive the brand "The Body Shop?
    -Luxurious
    -Unique
    -Daring
    -Sustainable
    -Affordable
    -Natural
    All those are labels and in the values you are given
    1=Totally Disagree
    2=Rather Disagree
    3=Half,half
    4=Rather agree
    5=Totally agree
    My question is do you enter each label independently so as to know who (Totally disagree,rather disagree,half,half,rather agree or totally agree) with luxurious,unique etc or?

      Thanks for the question about perceptions. First, the good stuff: when you use a scale of 1 to 5, make 5 the "most", as in most agreement, highest perception, etc. You also balance the "totally" and "rather" for the 1&5, 2&4. #3 might be "neutral" or "neither agree or disagree". Good. You would want to ask about each of your six descriptions ("Luxurious", etc.) in a separate question and each of the six would have its own scale. The question might make more sense if other brands are being compared...you could compare means. On the other hand, "unique" means "one of a kind" so there is not a 1-5 scale of unique, and "Daring" might be too strong an association. Is "natural" sufficiently different than "sustainable" or are they measuring the same underlying "thing"? So...use six questions, each is rated 1-5, create means from the scores, but do not read in too much to the findings because your prompts might be too vague. It gives you a nice beginning for comparisons, though. Good luck with your project!

    Hi Dr. Todd, hoping that you can help me with running dummy variables for categorical in multiple regression. May I email you the details or should I ask away here as it might be long to explain the problem.
    Thank you.

      I am working on a script about dummy variables in regression right now. I might be able to help. Or maybe we can learn together. Send me an email through the channel ...I have it posted there. (Don't want to post in the comments for fear of spam)

      Will send the complete email soon. Please let me know if you happen did not get the empty email so I'd know I get the wrong email.
      Thank you.
