Too much CGI ruins a lot of otherwise decent movies , I prefer it used sparingly with older style special effects like in Alien . That movie still holds up today very well .
+Lustria StormBorn That's actually how the T-600 was made in Terminator: Salvation! They had Bryan Steele inside a blue screen suit with fabricated parts, and CGI hydraulics were put in were they were needed! The same goes for the moto-terminators; in that scene where Christian Bale hijacks one and rides it to San Fransisco, they actually modified a Kawasaki motorcycle to look more like a terminator on wheels. As a matter of fact, there were only two machines in the movie that couldn't be done with puppetry. One was the harvester, and that thing was huge. The other was the H.K.
Stan Winston was one of a kind, I can't even begin to explain what that name means to me. His absences in movie effects is so noticeable. I really miss his work in movies, I absolutely adore the work he did in movies. He is a one of a kind and my absolute favourite in practical effects, and movies will never be the same without him.
Awesome movie, awesome acting, awesome effects, even compared to what digital effects are like now. But that aside, when it was said that the tiny little arms give a lot of character or emotion or whatever to the chestburster, is it me or does it look like he's passionately singing an opera?
Great debate, guys. We need BOTH. The best effect is the one the movie calls for. Most likely, the ones that make us gasp are begun with something cool on set to shoot & the seams are smoothed out in post. The real truth is we have a huge swath of fans, students & faculty comprised of genius CG artists. They LOVE practical effects and keep studying to make their digital work more organic. Anatomy and gravity are ideas that need to MASTERED. The best artists use it all.
The reason things like this were so scary was because they actually had a physical presence. The Thing, Alien etc were actually scary. CGI has literally never scared me and I dare to say most people find CGI less scary as well.
It's a very basic controller for cable actuation. If you check out Richard Landon's Cable Mechanism Basic Lesson on our site, it's all explained thoroughly by one of the dudes who moved the very chestburster you see here! - John
the technical achievement is so awesome and clever , I wonder if You guys could pull off making an human android coupled with a 3rd party Artificial Intelligence !
Stan Winston Studios has been going since around 1972 & is one of the best visual effects companies in the world. It'll probably outlive the individual artists involved. This isn't a portfolio for the individual artist. It's to show how a talented person within the company created the mechanics for the chestburster. Also the video footage is prob owned by Stan Winston Studios - So it would require their branding anyway. Great video - I love seeing the mechanics behind how creatures work!
Yes, that's the whole point of our school, preserving and promoting these techniques. Check out our lesson on cable mechanism basics with Richard Landon for a start. - David
Who ever created the xenomorph warriors (Aliens) deserves more credit! I gotten a NECA toy figure of the new alien creatures from Aliens! Before I go to arcade to play some Aliens Extermination, who created xenomorph warriors? I don't think giger did this time because I think fox fired him?
You practical affects guys should teach CGI guys about the mechanics involved in how things move. even with motion capture around, im sure they can still learn a thing or two about simulating natural movements in their subjects
i think we need both CG and mechanical effects, for me the CGI works for far away subjects but for closer subjects, they need to use mechanised or puppetry for that realistic effect movie junkies and critics crave.
i agree this is why Aliens is considered one of the best Sci fi movies ever, they had to use their creativity to deal with this kind of effects, thats a more real approach than CG if you ask me, thats why the movie feels so real even if you are watching space marines and aliens killing each other LOL
Quite true, though I think the best CGI guys don't need it. Look at ILM's stuff... so natural... More integration between puppets and CGI is a must though... together they produce far greater results than if either is used (or misused in some cases) on its own. Jurassic Park is perfection in this sense.
I wish Stephen Norrington would direct again. Blade was such an awesome movie adnd LXG had potential. I'm really sorry that he had such a bad experience making that movie but would hope it doesn't completely deter him from making another movie(even though it looks like that's exactly what has happened).
One of the faults of CGI is that because the creature is digital, it moves at a higher framerate, 60 FPS(currently), than a practical creature. A matter of fact, the digital creature has so much frames of animation per second that it moves at unreal speeds. Films usually run between 24-30 FPS just so you know.
This is in contrast with modern CGI which uses the exact same smoothed dead motions and IK to all their characters.. That's because they basically all use the same 3D tools. Something living like this, has flaws, irregular organic motions due to real constraints, that is what makes it real and gives it impact. To bad modern CGI artist have forgotten this..

エイリアン✨の機械仕掛け の人形スゴイです✨👀😊
I wish puppetry and real effects were utilised more in modern films
Teamed with small amounts of cgi.
Word Lustria StormBorn! - David

Dinoman217 that's awesome!!! I'm yet to watch terminator salvation, I'll grab it today :D
Lustria StormBorn You should! It's well made, has awesome special effects, not to mention that John Connor is played by the Dark Knight!
Stan Winston was one of a kind, I can't even begin to explain what that name means to me. His absences in movie effects is so noticeable. The world needs another Stephen Norrington film, stat!
looks like its singing opera.
True
Awesome movie, awesome acting, awesome effects, even compared to what digital effects are like now.
But that aside, when it was said that the tiny little arms give a lot of character or emotion or whatever to the chestburster, is it me or does it look like he's passionately singing an opera?
It's not just you, MetalSynkk. A few others have said the same thing. Question is: What opera is he singing?? -Matt
Yes, that's the Steve Norrington who directed Blade and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Great debate, guys. We need BOTH. The best effect is the one the movie calls for. Most likely, the ones that make us gasp are begun with something cool on set to shoot & the seams are smoothed out in post.

I wish that you guys would post some Monster Squad stuff if you had any. That Gill Man design was great.
Those Facehuggers and Chestbursters are hard to find in those Comic Conventions (stuffed ones, of course).
+saifMSK, Totally! We can imagine his voice sounding a bit like Placido Domingo's. - Matt
chestburster singing an emotional opera
One of the coolest mechanisms ever made - so simple, yet so dynamic and has so much impact! Fantastic.
Very realistic Stephen! Looks absolutely amazing :D
It's a great effect, isn't it, Emily Detherage? - David
I still think this is one of the most effective cable controlled effects, to date.
The reason things like this were so scary was because they actually had a physical presence. The Thing, Alien etc were actually scary. CGI has literally never scared me and I dare to say most people find CGI less scary as well.
Guissepe, Glad you enjoyed the video. And thanks for the suggestion, but we plan on being around for many years to come! -Matt
Thank you @pH4nTomPL4n3T!!! We appreciate it! -John

Amazing. When that movie came out that scene was gruesomely terrifying.
Truly frightening performance 👏
the technical achievement is so awesome and clever , I wonder if You guys could pull off making an human android coupled with a 3rd party Artificial Intelligence !
Yep, Parady Young, I think we could definitely pull that off. Just need an investor to back it. You in? -Matt
I LOVE the movie saga Aliens, and right now, I REALLY want that model!
Hahaha someone please dub the little guy with an opera song, make him the next Lucialieno Pavarotti or something lol...
It's like the little thing is singing dramatically... Love this.
It really is crazy all the emotion that can be conveyed.

Still creeps the Bejesus out of me even today:-))))) awesome effects:-))))))))
capt picard, We agree. It's amazing how well the movie holds up. - Matt

Gave me a few nightmares. Great work
Here's hoping Neill Blomkamp involves you guys to participate for his upcoming Alien film.
ROCK THE CASBAH. ROCK THE CASBAH.
Thanks mxwil9! -Matt
James, please look at our lesson with Steve Johnson and Billy Bryan. They talk about how they achieved that very effect! - David
You practical affects guys should teach CGI guys about the mechanics involved in how things move. even with motion capture around, im sure they can still learn a thing or two about simulating natural movements in their subjects
Amazing. I love videos like this.
Just voted for you guys. Best of luck with the contest!

Many thanks, pH4nTomPL4n3T! -Matt
What I've always have been curious about is the belly burster/ stomach growth scene from Species 2
This is amazing!
I'd like to see the controls for that and how they linked them in!
For example, I don't understand the reason why the practical effects in the last "the thing" were replaced by CGI. Mystety for me.
i agree this is why Aliens is considered one of the best Sci fi movies ever, they had to use their creativity to deal with this kind of effects, thats a more real approach than CG if you ask me, thats why the movie feels so real even if you are watching space marines and aliens killing each other LOL
it's still adorable :P but that's just my opinion
It looks cuter with tiny arms
Great stuff, really thank you for sharing. Readers of our website will be happy to see this gem as well
Still a better effect than anything ive seen with cgi.
Quite true, though I think the best CGI guys don't need it. Look at ILM's stuff... so natural...

BAD ASS!
this is why animatronics will always beat CGI when it comes to realism.
kinda curious, can you use these techniques to create action figures ?
I think I will try to make this
good god, why I'm not subscribed to this channel yet?
damn i always wondered how they made the scene where it erupts from kane
creepy movie and still creeps me to this very day but good to know how this was done
Awesome!!!
Baby my heart's on fire!
That's even worse.
Nightmares forever!
wow! And now the animatronic facehuggher, please! :-)
Dammit !!, now i gotta watch alien again --_-- hahahahha
Cant wait until they start building robots with the voice of syrie in them...you know walking, talking...thats the next gen syrie...
action figures stop motion with armatronic mechanism, Is it possible?
We always thought aliens would come from outer space. No one thought they would actually come from out out planet.
Better than ANY cgi made today.
Best acting by Johnson the cat
this so awesome.
Awesome!! simply awesome...
Make it walk and sing "Hello My Baby".
And you'll be left alone...
Animatronics is the best!
Great!
I'm confused does this even have electricity or robotics or is it pure wires cuz If its pure wires I want to learn how to make stuff like this
Love it.
It looks like its dancing AVP extinction is awesome.
Best selling toy of 1979
Awesome
StudioADI's chestburster from Alien: Resurrection was just so bad. I really wish that they had watched this video.
This is in contrast with modern CGI which uses the exact same smoothed dead motions and IK to all their characters.. That's because they basically all use the same 3D tools. Something living like this, has flaws, irregular organic motions due to real constraints, that is what makes it real and gives it impact. To bad modern CGI artist have forgotten this..
they tried that
Water, my ass! Get this guy some Pepto Bismol!
Am I the only one that thinks the puppet looks like it singing opera?
And you'll be left alone
If you refuse me...
that's kinda what they were going for
I'm sorry, I stopped listening after "easily mass produced" and started imagining my chestburster army
Puppetry over CG any day !
why have arms ?
Animatronics FTW.
hes the same dude who made Blade
I wish we still got practical effects I love them so much. I'm absolutely sick of over done CGI movies, their so fake looking and I hate them.
What I would have given to do this for a job!
I wanted to write the same thing.
...Hello my darlin'...
Hello, my ragtime gal
"easily mass-producable".......go on.......
57 people appear to have indigestion:-)
