    Jurassic Park - Evolution of a Raptor Suit
    FULL STORY: bit.ly/RaptorSu...
    Stan Winston Studio created multiple raptors for JURASSIC PARK, including full-size cable-controlled puppets, half-puppets, insert legs, and men-in-suits.
    This exclusive "Making of" video, narrated by raptor suit performer, 25-year SWS supervisor & co-founder of Legacy Effects, John Rosengrant, walks you through the evolution of JURASSIC PARK's raptor suits, from first foam fabricated "garbage bag test" to the finished suits that you see in the final film.

    I love this. This is a fantastic example of when Jurassic Park took things seriously. No locusts, no hybrids, just dinosaurs. And scary ones at that. You think blue the Velociraptor can scare you as much as these can?

    • @WafflesssFalling
      @WafflesssFalling Год назад +6

      I think the new raptors (like Blue) are less about being scary and more about being animals lol- they still create prosthetics/physical dino props like this for the new movies!

      These are terrifying. The Big One is an evilly-motivated sadistic killing machine. Blue is far less malicious.

      Well, they were hybridized with other Animal's DNA, so I guess it would be accurate in that sense.

    • @Dino_Guy69
      @Dino_Guy69 3 месяца назад

      @@L_TrainFor it's time it was extremely accurate. This movie helped bring the idea that dinosaurs weren't lizards and instead were more related to birds. And it's scientifically accurate. If you're going to insult nerds, do your research.

    God bless you Stan Winston the legend that brought dinosaurs too life. With his awesome talent just like Ray harryhausen did for his time. Practical effects and stop motion were both ahead of there time. I still wished they used it today I know they do mildly. But not like they used too do back then. Thanks too all of them for making such masterpiece of a movie it was my childhood.

    • @ChronoSquare
      @ChronoSquare 10 лет назад +3

      Have you seen the Where the Wild Things Are movie? I haven't, but I remember reading about it (or a movie close to it) - animatronic suits that had the fine details of emotion and facial expressions CGI'd on. There's some range of emotion that is qutie difficult to capture with practical stuff like that!

    • @StanWinstonSchool
      @StanWinstonSchool  10 лет назад +20

      BlackenTheSky6 ChronoSquare Sometimes you can make things practically that you wouldn't expect like the raptor suit. Then there are some things that practical effects just can't do. And it is that collaboration between CGI and practical that makes things more believable.

      I really love to have a Raptor from those used in the movie Jurassic Park, not the suit, but rather one of the models that are like mannequins and don't move, (not as they are called xD), for example those that are in the Universal Studios, no matter the price could pay whatever, but honestly it would be great to have it. :/

      A Koala with Shades
      Only like, six minutes out of the whole movie are actually CG, the rest is practical effects and for the most part, you can’t even tell the difference. Did you notice that in the scene where Rexy attacks the car with the kids inside, the car itself was CG in some shots? I sure as hell didn’t, it freaking blew my mind when I first heard about it. Jurassic Park was a well-done blend of both, unlike many recent movies that lost sight of this balance and just use CG for everything regardless of whether it looks right or not. There’s a time and a place for both CG and practical effects, and they work best when they work together and balance out each other’s flaws.

      @@AppGuy The sad thing is that today, its too expensive and 'time consuming' to create this kind of thing, so everything is just CGI....I really hate that about modern action movies today. They lack real world emmersion. The other week I went back and watched Died Hard 3 (1995) and I'd forgotten just how emmersive that movie was....almost no CGI... everything looks shot in the real world. You can't put a price on that when it comes to action films.

      DJBURBZ Nope, CGI started seeing use in the very late 80s. It wasn't until the late 90s that it really took off. Jurassic Park made cinema history with its photorealistic CG creature effects seamlessly blended with practical effects. Basically most scenes where a dinosaur is running were CG, like the T-Rex chasing the jeep.

    • @HunGerMovies
      @HunGerMovies 7 лет назад +9

      There was CGI in Jurassic Park, but they did not overdose it and cared about the quality. Still the best parts are the animatronics part of the movie. Ironically James Cameron waited for decades to make the Avatar with improved CGI, but still ended up in a much shittier result than Terminator 2, which was made decades ago. Because he got senile and forgot that if he wants to make a good movie he cannot just rely on CGI alone.

    Interesting - I thought all the dinos in Jurassic Park were CGI'ed. I always wondered why they generally looked more real in the original from 1993 than in later films. Now I have some of the answer.

    • @annetYHS78
      @annetYHS78 9 лет назад +1

      The reason in the original film they looked more real was because they used animatronics instead of complete CGI. They used CGI for the legs though, as animatronics could not move like that. Also, they only used the raptor suit for a few parts in the movie. For example, if you search up something like "Jurassic Park T. Rex animatronic," you'll see some videos showing footage of them using it.

    1:09 ...and here we see the velociraptor in its natural habitat, a fancy wedding. The raptor has shed it's feathery plumage in favor of a white tuxedo and black bow tie. At first one might assume that the lack of a gown in such formal setting indicates that this is a male, however, it is in fact a female trying to avoid being hit on by drunk dilophisaur after the ceremony, proving that she is beyond doubt, a clever girl. That is how the velociraptor do.

    Good god but the raptors in Jurassic World looked bad. Even the trash bag model looks great in comparison to those renders. And the stuff with the raptor heads, just the heads, in cages being touched by the actors? The actors were clearly touching empty air. There was nothing there.
    Stan Winston, we miss you, we love you. and I want to hug all my old Jurassic Park toys and cry. They spent 200+ Million on Jurassic World, and I felt like there was barely a single dinosaur in the whole movie.

    • @timmey227
      @timmey227 9 лет назад +13

      slappy2013 you're only half right. During the filiming process, yes the actors had real puppet raptor heads to touch. But during the editing, CGI heads were put on top of the animatronic heads to "make it look better" (which is, in my opinion, the worst idea ever)

  • @gsimon123
    @gsimon123 10 лет назад +12

    The beauty of the special effects from the first Jurassic Park was in the variation of techniques used. When I watched the making-of videos I was shocked at certain scenes being the reverse of what I thought. Certain scenes I could have sworn were CGI and others animatronics only to find out the reverse. When it was released people thought everything was CGI even the raptor in the egg! Amazing that even today I could not guess the correct technique. How many people noticed that when the T-Rex steps on the vehicle to bite the tire that the entire CAR and LEX were CGI only to turn into a REAL model of the T-Rex and the REAL Lex in the next cut? The art is in the trickery and arguably no movie has done it better ;)

    • @DJVPRB
      @DJVPRB 10 лет назад +3

      The kids were put into that shot by 'green screen'. So it was always the real actors, just camera tricked. Same as the scene where DR Grant is laying on the grass and he sees the heard of dinosaurs with Ellie. They are 'green screened' into that shot.
