How exactly do we stop it though? It's not as though everybody is going to stop buying cell phones out of protest over these things. They have us by the balls and they know it. That's where the consumer mentality has gotten us. At some point maybe we could have done something, but as far as I can see it's too little too late, because all of the manufacturers are going in the same direction regardless of whether we like it or not. These things are not done on a whim, they are planned out well in advance. I guarantee you there are already plans in the works for the deprecation of 4G devices now that 6G is being worked on, even if it's ten years or more out yet.

I basically bricked roughly 90% of the phones I used to own trying to root them at a minimum. The only two I succeeded with has been my old Nexus and my current Moto Play Z (the one with add-ons, but they baited people with the "DIY" and SDK add-ons idea, then pulled it down a while after ._. ).
The worst brick I have (yup still got) is the Zenfone ML511 (A00Z) that won't take *any* manufacturer signed firmware (not even the Chinese model firmware) and yet it's based on the X86 architecture. Trying to unlock the bootloader by passing a string to the bootloader messed the signing key and perma-bricked the phone.
This is probably the most egregious anti Right-to-Repair move.
Would be nice for repurposing reasons to have a solder-pad behind the battery called "UEFI" and have that boot like any UEFI firmware does currently and maybe have the UEFI mode burnt into a ROM area in the SoC. (Would be easier to quickly compile a bunch of kernels to see what one boots and thus easier to program. Also It'd be obvious if the phone keeps showing "UEFI" in big writing that it maybe tampered with assuming "evil-maid" attacks, so their "security" argument falls apart)

For me, a wired headphones means reliability (never had my wired headphones go out of battery) and audio quality (no weird disconections or stuttering if i left the phone somewhere)
But i recently came across another argument for headphones jack: it's MUCH simpler and intuitive to use. I installed a Bluetooth sound system in our living room, yet my mother keep listening to music on the phone's speaker. But when she's in the office we have, she intuitively plug the audio cord laying on the desk into her phone, because she knows that this means music and of she goes...

They're also ultrawide like most modern computer monitors and support HDR. They even have dedicated camera buttons and native PS4 controller support out of the box, so they're fun little emulator phones too. They also have the full water and dust resistance as well.

Let's not forget the removal of the MicroSD port to completely render you unable to expand the storage and no more dual-SIM either. Or when they decided to put non-removable batteries in these bricks. As you said, it all boils down to making more money, nickel and dime you as much as possible, squeeze you out of every last cent for shorter and shorter periods. They don't want you to use the same phone for over 4 years and even if you want to, add to that the lack of updates and support. Programs themselves dropping entire lines and models, the obfuscation and difficulty to apply the right to repair... Feels like mobile is already treading that infamously disgusting "you'll own nothing and be happy" Orwellian nightmare. Back to topic, for proper bluetooth phones I would rather get something like those Fiio adaptors that let you turn wired IEMs into bluetooth ones instead of these disposable TWS with their death clocks.

    • @thetechgenie7374

I can understand removing the SD slot as there is a good reason. The reason that put them on cheaper phones is due to bandwidth is not a issue. The high-end phones you have cameras capable of 8k and processors that capable of alot of bandwidth on bus. Even good fast speed class SD cards can't keep up and Likely people complain to much about issues. Then you got the fact most people don't know the difference between faster class SD card, or throw in whatever they have laying around, put apps on it and wondered why is slow, or don'twork correctly and call customer service complaining. I actually had to tell people they need a class 10, or U3 rated MicroSD card and over their head and don't think it worth spending the difference and only think capacity. So manufacturers eliminated it completely mainly for better experience for the mainstream consumers as they can't complain about poor video performance, poor pictures quality and apps crashing, or slow to load, missing files and etc. I wish they when to SD express like most professional broadcast gear but is much larger and likely reason they didn't? So yes the internal memory is much faster and better. MicroSD is outdated and can't keep up pretty much, plus in some case unreliable. Even broadcast and professional level equipment moved away from MicroSD a while ago.
Now to be honest I wish they kept the card slot anyways as some use to store music lossless files which MicroSD is good enough but I get why they removed it on faster phones and reason it still on cheap to midrange phones.
Now the headphones jack there is no excuse but due to pure greed to get people to buy wireless buds. The excuse they use claiming they had to fold display controller under display as edge to edge display the reason is not valid as could have moved headphone jack to top, or side and LG been doing it even with edge to edge display, so definitely could have been done.

It's disappointing to see Samsung removing the headphone jack and charger even for their lower end phones. I'm glad that Xiaomi is still giving you chargers even with their latest Mi 12 Pro. I hope they never stop doing that, or at least give you a choice if you want the charger or not.
Also, I imagine that by using GaN tech and a slim form factor, companies can certainly make a smaller box that can also fit a small but powerful charger.

Unfortunately, I don't know what we can do. It's trivial for these corporations to do as they please and set trends that most people will go out of their way to defend to protect their own egos.

Used to be a Samsung fan back in the days, the days when Samsung were doing the opposite of what Apple is doing and going as far as making a series poking fun of Apple: the iPhone notch family, lack of expendable storage... .
Nowadays they copied everything Apple does from removing the headphone jack to the multiples high-end devices type (Samsung: e, normal, plus, ultra, Apple: Mini, normal, Pro, Pro Max) and even removing the expendable storage on high end devices; the extra money is too important for these companies than Fan Service nowadays.

agree. I've bought a new phone recently, and yeah, it has no headphone jack and such. And i'm still keeping my old, trusty Huawei P30 around, sure it doesn't have a microSD slot, but 128GB for the phone i'd use to listening to music, no hassle. And yeah, what a better way to listen to music = with a WIRED headset nonetheless

Planned obsolescence is a blight. Remember when HP printers were so tough you could practically hit them with a car? HP, in their infinite wisdom, decided that it wasn't as important to have happy customers as it was to produce billions of tons of cheap plastic........ waste. I'm sure it's the same with headphones.

Hey Hugh, I completely agree on the charger topic here. I switched from a OnePlus 5T to a Google Pixel 6 last year. The Pixel obviously came without a charger but the cable was USB-C on both sides. The OP5T still had a USB-A charger and wasn't even compatible with the Pixel 6 (OnePlus uses VOOC and Google uses USB-PD). Fortunately Apple also uses USB-PD and I can use my Google charger for both my company iPhone and my private Pixel. If we really want to make chargers more economically friendly we don't only need to make them mechanically compatible, but also electrically. Sure companies will claim that this throttles innovation, but in the end this will reduce the ecological footprint of chargers. For the headphones, I am not sure sure. I personally use over-ear headphones (Bose QC35 II to be precise) and they have replaceable cushions and also seem to be screwed together. I'd appreciate a repair check from you for this model though.

Their biggest con is getting people to buy a phone that you will never truly own. It may be in your pocket. You might have paid them handsomely for it. But it's still owned by its maker and the supplier of its operating system who change it, adjust it, alter your personal preferences, add unwanted and often undeletable apps etc
That's a crime but they did tell you somewhere in their 250 page microprinted T & Cs - so their conscience is clear at least...
PS. Imagine if housebuilders or auto companies had the right to pop in unannounced to change your seat, mirror and radio settings. Or to move your furniture around.
That's the arrogance of these companies.

A good point that low mid range smartphones have these features but high end ones don't. It seems like an idiot with money trap, buying a high end smartphone. It's like those people who pay 50$ for a white t-shirt instead of just 5$ because it has a tiny emblem on it. Companies want idiots with money to buy their products.
And it makes sense since Apple is clearly dominating the US market, your average American has enough money to just toss for the latest iPhone, while in Asia and Europe people opt for cheaper phones.
Not saying iPhones aren't totally worth it but if you really love Apple buy used, what's the damn difference? It's all about wealth.

What I love about the PC industry is you have channels like Gamers Nexus and LTT who have the guts to criticize and openly sift through corporate bs from companies like GIGABYTE with their faulty PSU’s or NZXT with the H110 that would catch on fire. And these channels will point out the good that some companies do like when Fractal recalled their torrent case. In the phone market there is much less of that and I believe that is due to the fact that not everyone has a PC, so you get a very large group of people with PC’s who are connected, but overall a smaller market. Then with phones it’s a lot of people, but the same group of people who are knowledgeable about phones is extremely small compared to the overall market. Still have the same voice, just so much smaller. There are definitely other reasons but I think what needs to happen to Apple, Samsung and Google, is an investigation by the FTC, and that’s the last thing I want, but it’s what needs to happen.

These problems start with a handful of customers being too stupid to say no to the first couple companies that pull this type of shenanigan. Then it becomes an issue for _all_ of us when _every_ company starts doing it and we run out of other places to spend our money.
For the first time ever, last year I bought a phone and it did not coming with a charging brick. I was furious and would have returned it for a refund, but there was literally no one else that had a phone in this form factor who still offered a charging brick, so I had no option but to eat it.

Excellent video. I've gotten into plenty of arguments with people that insist that the constant removal of features in today's phones is anything other than pure corporate greed at the expense of their customers. It is amazing how people just believe the marketing BS that these companies spout, especially if it is coming from Apple.
It is important to remember, any public company has one responsibility, to make the most money possible for their shareholders. If they are changing something it is because they believe it will make them more revenue or profit which should in turn will increase the share price.

Honestly i loved the Nokia era where they made phones which were completely different than others like the next model looked nothing like the previous. It's like different people designed them. But now it's the same phone with slightly different or higher specs and every phone looks the same you can barely tell the difference between two models.
