4 months, 7 custom circuit boards designs, 3 disassembled iPhones later, it works. It's the first modern iPhone with a headphone jack - the only one like it in the world.
More details here (and answers to all your questions): strangeparts.com/bringing-back...
For diehard Strange Parts fans, go here to find out more about how to get a limited edition headphone jack circuit board: strangeparts.com/headphones
The design is completely open source! Go here to find out more: github.com/strangeparts/niubi-...
I NEED YOUR HELP! Tell me what you'd like to see me do next in the comments! I'm really looking forward to exploring the back alleys of the industrial world outside of just cell phones and China. And if you think you have a really awesome idea, please email tips@strangeparts.com. In particular, if you live somewhere cool (particularly India or Africa), I want to hear about the industrial world(markets/factories/mines/etc) where you live. And if you're an engineer in manufacturing, hit me up with that cool factory story you've been dying to have someone tell. Thanks guys!

FUCK YES!
It is pretty much impossible for people who don't posses certain engineering knowledge.
No it actually IS impossible lol unless you have a certain set of skills that would take years to acquire, engineering skills. So you can't just attempt it.
This is practically impossible anywhere in the world. He was in Shenzhen where he had access to all those parts and folks who were able to throw out suggestions and help him whenever he came across a problem.
For a headphone jack he went this far. I can't believe it. geek on an another level!!!!
I can't believe that the repairman at the phone shop said that you couldn't add a headphone jack to the phone even if you wanted to... If you really want to get gritty with it, you could just scrape away the protective layer on top of a PCB trace responsible for analog audio output.
I have gone through a lot on my professional career studies, but looking at you trying it again and again has been such a motivation to keep going and never give up! Greetings from Dominican Republic 🇩🇴

If I grew up. I literally gonna do things ur doing. What your doing is really my thing. I really loved watching your vids. I'm 13 when I started fixing my own earphone ciruits. I'm 16 years old when I fixed my own andriod phone and learned it's ecosystem. Until I tried changing the whole operating system and reprogram it just for fun. Now I'm 18, I fixed simple circuits of little machines and even fixed our old netbook and made it fully functional. Like in your videos, I also came to the point that I almost broke my only smartphone and became a mess. But then after I finished my project. The full fillment in finishing it really makes my heart flutter and loves the feeling of achieving something that I didn't expect I would do. What I am saying is you're an inspiration bro! I love you!

wow i was wondering when jerryrig was gonna say this.. i came across the channel recently and its so much great content!
I was waiting for you to go to the apple store again and try to buy an iphone 7, but insist on the model with the headphone jack. When they tell you they don't make any, pull yours out and show them, just to see how they'd react.
I have seen something like that happen. They will take many pictures of it and send them all over the company. Just don't let them inside it if you ever want it back working again.
As an engineer and a maker who makes my own prototypes and PCB's I applaud you. You have my great respect for your skill, endurance and perseverance! Thank you Sir.
We need more innovative engineers to rise up and challenge Apple --- the world is sick of their BS
Bill Belzek the tech world is getting away from the Apple mainstream. But the lack of earphone jack is purely for financial reasons and not engineering difficulties.
I find myself actually on edge of my seat during the testing and cheering along when things work. Great video.
Really great video! This is the type of content I'm looking for
9:04 oh that's such a good businesses practice. Taking it out of the package and assembling and debugging it in front of you before you even buy it. Increases the perception of legitimacy and probably saves from the hassle & money loss of customers returning with broken devices or who couldn't figure out how to assemble and want to return it
that's pretty much the norm on very expensive industrial equipment, you won't see this pratice on cheap consumer products
That's not common? Never been in a shop that doesn't do that.
Yeah, it was very legit.
Yeah that microscope costs like $5,000 or more and its in China, so you have to make sure it works and is a legit machine as theres a ton of counterfeits made in China.
Chinese marketplace sellers do that because they know they're up against huge competition from other vendors in the market, and want to provide the best possible customer experience. Even the lady selling me a ¥160 power bank did that when I went to one of those huge electronics shopping malls...

3.5 mm barrel jacks have gotten extremely tiny. Especially the PCB surface mount variety. There are some extremely high-quality and tiny jacks available now, basically the exact size of the headphone plug except the reverse shape.
I pull them from boards all the time. I’m amazed how tiny they are with little surface mount pads, extremely nice solid billet machining, thick gold plating, and high-quality spring mechanism.

Somehow I saw this video was suggested by RUclips and then I just clicked in. At first, I thought it'll be another tech guy that just showing off how to add a headphone jack in about 20 minutes or so, kinda like just buying some sort of kits/adapters online and soldering something in, kinda like how you mod a retro video game console and add RGB or something, and that's it. But then as I kept watching, I started to realize that this is going to be huge, and then as time went by, weeks after weeks, lots of trial and errors, the sadness of him seeing the unexpected results, and the happiness of him finally succeed. I see how a man dedicated himself to this challenging project, with his hard work, and never giving up attitude. This is truly amazing. It is not the mod itself that excites me, but his story, the dedication and the spirit that encourages me, to do your best, and never say never. And of course, shame on Apple for not having the headphone jack on purpose.
BTW, I wonder what Tim Cook would react if he sees this video. We should definitely let him see this.
