I think Android users especially would be wise to shop almost exclusively for used phones unless you really have a desire for something brand new that isn't on the resale market. As long as you know how to test the battery and you can find trusted sellers, you can save 50% or more of the cost. Even something like a used Note 9 or Pixel 4, is a terrific flagship feature phone with a more than capable processor and it's like 200 bucks
Yeah, I've bought a OnePlus 8 with a cracked back for $200, nothing a case can't fix.
android users don´t usually buy used because omg
THEY ARE AFORDABLE
@@MilesProwerTailsFox are you trying to say that new flagship androids are cheap? have you seen the prices some companies are charging??
@@patfluff or just buy NOS of last 2 years flagship model
@@emward6858 I run a jailbrokrn 5th gen kindle fire HD7, the thing is years old and was not designed to run Google play, I have had absolutely no issues with apps not installing, definitely some bigs, but thays because of the jailbreak, not the android version. The only thing you are really missing update wise are security related, and the Log4j hack has shown that 0 day vulnerabilities still exist
Y'all, ALWAYS ask for an IMEI and if the phone has had any work done on, if they're the first owner, etc.
also I wanna thank you again for getting me into repair, I fixed up a bunch of phones and prepped them for the Christmas season and they're actually selling really well! I can finally buy a bit more expensive and personalised gifts for my relatives this year :) Not bad for something I started 6 months ago. I try to adopt your high standards as much as I can (I can't buy refurbished stuff yet cause that's wayyyyy too expensive for me) and I feel very proud of the phones I put out. Hell, might start doing repair vids soon if I can get a proper tripod lmao. Thanks for getting me into this :))
You can change the IMEI
Great job, I’m also repairing phones and trying to be like my role model, Hugh 😄
@@Nahverkehrsfotograf You can change IMEI of some android phones with special tools . iPhone's IMEI can't be changed .
Just a question, looking to get into repair but can't understand all the different parts and how to diagnose. Any videos you watched to help you understand the basics?
@@child3219 just watched a boatload of Hugh and other random repair channels out there. If I had a question on how to change a certain part on a model I was interested in working on, I always looked at videos to determine if it was worth the hassle or not. (Some display replacements are a complete mess) It took me a few months of passive content consumption to even TRY to touch a broken phone. It's a lot of work for my stupid brain, especially for a person who has NEVER been into tech before.
My diagnosis aren't always right and it'll take a lot of trial and error to get the hang of it. There's a lot of guessing involved unless you've been doing this for a really long time, and even then you just go down the list of most common stuff that break or can go wrong.
My advice is to watch as many videos as you can, until you feel confident enough to work on a device. It'll get to that point, you'll start to itch on the inside to fix something. Phones for the most part are very modular and especially androids follow a few simple layouts. For your own sake don't start with iPhones and when you do, buy a couple broken old 4 or 4s to just tinker with, cause their screws and parts are such a hassle to deal with.

Just scored a 64gb iPhone 6s on iOS 11.2.2 today for my collection, But this video sums up about all the things I look for when looking for used devices. Some of the scams I see, I just don’t understand how people keep falling for them. If it’s way too good to be true, it probably is.
Are phones on old iOS versions worth more? I have my old daily, an iPhone 6s on 11.3.1 that I don’t really use laying around
@@CentralPALocos Depends on where you get them and what version the phone is running, I know in the collector community some go for a premium but most eBay sellers are just selling their old ones that have been sitting in drawers for a while, I basically just look at the listing pictures to determine iOS version, and if I’m considering purchasing I tell the seller that I don’t want it updated. I managed to get my 6s on 11.2.2 for $80 and I have a 7 on iOS 12.1 that I got for $50 from a friend. I’d say a 6s still on iOS 11 in 2021 is rare especially with most them running 13-15.
@@CentralPALocos I also forgot to mention to some collectors storage options can be a factor in value. If you sell to the right people they’ll pay more but your average iPhone buyer probably won’t or will see what the big deal is.
@@thehometownidjit4268 ah, thank you! I have a bunch of iPhones and none of them are higher than 13. I daily SEs in both gens, both on 13, and the 2020 SE I haven’t updated since i got it, I’m keeping it as mint as possible since it was my first and only brand new iPhone purchase. I also think iOS 13 is the upper limit for the A9s, and I think 12 is the best for them. My old 6s a1700 64GB on 12.4 my grandfather is using was really good when it was my daily, the SE on 13 is a bit worse, especially in the RAM department. 11 is still somewhat of a mess but historic at this point
@@CentralPALocos I agree with everything you said, my main devices are all the iphone 12 series models that have never been updated past 14.2-14.8 and an 11 and 11 pro on 14.8.1. I have some novelty devices like the 6s on 11, 1st gen SE on 12, and a 7 on 12. i never update my phones. the versions they are on is what I got them on. The A9 devices plateau on 12, the a10’s can run 13 just without too much complications and the a11’s run best on 11-13, 14 wrecks the iphone 8 and 8 plus. Have a junk 8 i got on 15 and it runs horrible, so im trying to track down an iphone 8 on 12 or ios 13.
5:58 you can remove icloud lock from iPad/ipod touch actually. this is done by changing the device identifiers like the SN, WIFI Mac and Bluetooth Mac to ones that are fmi off
That requires microsoldering

I love my iPhone, but I can't stand Apple. Have been buying their products since 1994, but their treatment of customers is just appalling now.
My best wishes to you for the New Year.
True, my first iPhone was 4 in 2018 (I’m 17) and I loved it but from 5s, Apple started doing unrepairable phones ( pairing Touch ID, battery, screen etc).
I remember a customer tried selling us his Note 5 and insisted that you could only pull the notification panel down with the S Pen... He didn't like me telling him his display wasn't functional lol

Amazing video Hugh! Like always. Been watching you for a few years, and your videos never get old my friend. This guide is amazing, and ill be considering it in the future when I buy a phone from eBay next time.
Thanks for watching out for us Hugh! Happy Holidays! ✌
I bought an iPhone 7 from a store that repairs phones for $200. It was legit a 32 GB model. I went to a pawn shop and saw a brand new iPhone XS for $150, with a minor crack on the back. I bought it and it also had 512 Gb.
Lmao @ the iCloud scene 😃😃
Honestly I’d only really trust something like eBay, because eBay has a money back guarantee where you can create cases and there is no bias (sometimes.. not always) meanwhile a business can choose to be bias on what they’ve sold and Facebook marketplace or something like that is just too easy to get scammed and they walk away with hundreds.
b grade iphone 4s
Dude you're awesome! Happy to see your channel growing more & more!
It's not just the "independent scammers" you need to look out for. I called up T-Mobile to unlock a phone I bought on eBay. The first representative told me he'd do it "immediatlely" for $100; or I could call back and tell the next rep all the info I told *him*; phone#, pin#, billing address, etc. When I called back, *that* representative said I needed to pre-pay several additional months, since the phone hadn't been "used enough" by the previous owner. Oh, and I'll have to wait for the "appeal process", 10 business days.
You should keep out with the term “GPP”
These are usually iPhones that are locked to a carrier outside your country and uses a sim spoofing tool that communicates between your sim card and the iPhone and tricks the iPhone that the sim is from the carrier where the iPhone is locked in. These are also refurbished with questionable parts like mismatched Touch ID sensors that didn’t come originally with the main board (which will fail when you update the iOS)
I think those GPP iPhones are called "chip-unlocked"
ebay takes a pretty large cut from all sales, however, the buyer protection is great
Rubbish. eBay never action complaints and PayPal is worse
@@markc6714 I feel like they neglect their sellers more than their buyers.
I mean at the end of the day if you don't get what you pay for, you will get your money back. The tricky part is edge cases but eBay will generally side with the consumer on edge cases. Again, I'm not saying it's the best alternative. Swappa for instance, you at least get an IMEI number ahead of time and several more protections although there still is level of trust.
Always bought the top tier phones up to the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra...Well, I was given a A52S to use for a while and ended up buying one... Realised I never used most of the 'features' that I bought the phones because of...

Exactly, I've used them for a 6S a year ago, it worked.
I've actually just done this today on a 6s my dad found outside about a year ago. After three macOS VMs and two days I've finally done it and I learned a lot using Apple software lol.
@@remty516 Using a VM is usually not recommended. I'm glad it worked for you but a cheap Mac or a hackintosh is usually a lot more reliable for these things
Thank you so much. Finally I can show my grandma what I been trying to explain
Don’t think I would ever buy used. When it comes to this, I would just buy new and have a warranty and support. Where buying used it is more work. However I do frequently buy used on many devices. But good advice. Do research, take your time, and ask questions. I usually buy from reputable business. Though that experience sometimes doesn’t always work out. But your likelihood of being fine is much better than not with business. Phones I just won’t go with the trouble of risking my money on something like this. Just isn’t worth it. Cool video though.
One word, used Samsung Galaxy Xcover Pro. Hotswap battery, modern midrange specs, headphone jack, nice display ~$250
Bought an iPhone 8 in an emergency on May 31 to replace my phone. I knew it was old, but it was cheap and available on a US holiday. Ended up being sold to me with a battery I needed to replace. I did so through Ifixit, and found the battery in the phone wasn't original, and held in with loose adhesive. I think the seller intentionally swapped in an old battery to sell it and profit a bit more. A shop I won't return to.
0:01 i agree i recently got an S20 5G (maxed out snapdragon model) for 300CAD$!! (220usd or 327aud) the snapdragon version of this phone isn't even available here in CA
It's a refurb but it's in perfect condition and works flawlessly! and considering that the same phone from other companies goes for 650+$ here it was an amazing score!
Thank you for your guide! I'm sure this will help many other people and now i finally get to move on from my 3 year old S10 !!

This man right here....is one way or another related to Zuck
Personally I think the iCloud lock should turn itself off after a certain timespan like 3 years. I mean if the device is in fact stolen the value will have decreased significantly by then and it's somewhat unlikely the previous owner still has the password to the account. And it should have a button to send a generic unlock request to the connected Apple account where they can decline or accept. If they don't react at all for a timespan of like 3 months it should automatically unlock the device because then that would indicate that they either don't care or don't have access to their account anyway.
Why would Apple let perfectly functioning phones be used when they're lost, stolen or abandoned when people could just buy new phones? They have no public pressure to provide a tool to unlock iCloud locked devices, it doesn't make them more money (that's actually debatable), and it's not the Apple way of doing things.
Remember, "Think different."
For iPhone use 3utools to check replacement parts and do not forget to check oled burn in
I'm in the UK. So I bought a phone on ebay. However, ut was locked to Verizon in America. I went through hell to get a replacement. Finally, when I threatened to sue, they sent me a good phone. The seller didn't have any feedback or anything. So I didn't know.
Yes, you did know, just you ignored it. Never buy an expensive item from someone who has less that 20-30 big sales.
I never got scammed, when I used Ebay - I simply followed the previous rule and I bought brand new (unopened) expensive phones.
I'm going to buy a phone early next year so this came in time. Cheers

This is the best guide ever. 130k likes only? 99% of used iPhone buyers don’t care about what they’re getting
Bruh iCloud locks don’t completely brick an iPhone if it’s on an early version of iOS 11. You could put in all zeros and it’ll unlock itself. Sadly it got patched.
A perfect example can be found when My Mate Vince repaired some iPhone 6ses.
I got scammed on ebay once. I bought an s10e and got an s10 instead.
That's more of an upgrade lol
So you didnt get scammed, but the seller did, congrats now youre the scammer! /s
I wanted a Samsung Note10 +.
I also found it, of course on eBay. Strangely enough, the price was too cheap to be true - 300 Euros for the 256GB Model in mint condition! No Scratches, No broken Display, Nothing!!
So I wrote to the seller to find out more. He said he was extending his contract, got a Note20, wife didn't want it, neither did child. Complete history. Perfect.
As an extra that was not specified, I got 2 real leather cases, an NFC charging pad and new in-ears!
I got my awesome Xcover Pro for $250, it was sold as Used - Mint. I got it in a hilarious box advertising a IPhone 6 knockoff with "smart phone for smart people" all over it. It came with a 3rd party charger/cable and had absolutely ZERO signs of wear. It must have been open box, yet %50 just for that.
Worst thing I've found is carrier locks I bought an s21 ultra last year used that was confirmed paid off it was originally verizon and even Verizon said it was paid off and unlocked but insert another carrier sim it would work for 5 minutes then pop up a message saying carrier lock and kill the service. After many hours and an fcc complaint later it ended up being incorrect firmware on the phone. When you buy a carrier phone from bestbuy its originally factory unlocked with unlocked Samsung firmware but Verizon has some strange locking software that gets added and won't remove itself unless you go through Odin and reflash the phone with the Verizon model firmware as soon as it boots back up it immediately unlocks then you can reflash it to the factory unlocked firmware and have a working phone. Things like this shouldn't even be an issue but carriers in my opinion are worse then icloud activation locks. Not to mention unlock codes which some carriers will refuse to provide even if the phone is paid off completely and not stolen because your not the name on the account. To me it's the worst of the worst and there really should be some laws preventing these locks from being this hard to remove on something that is legitimately paid off and not stolen
from what i heard here in ro you can get a ic locked iph 11 for 100 dollars or so if u totaled ur own phone and u need a scrren and frame
People have tools that can rewrite the iPhone parts data to replacement parts including display, battery etc. Moreover these programming tools can alter the battery health of iPhone
I got an iPhone 4S for 6€ from a listing where the only picture of the phone working was the recovery screen. Thankfully it's fully working, it just needs a new dock connector
Bro are you that surgeon from the good doctor
Apple has launched Independent repair provider program in Australia. We are one of the IRPs who can service genuine apple parts with calibration after display and battery replacement.
IRP sadly locks you out of many repairs from what I've seen. Or maybe that changed recently, but you never know when Apple will screw you next.
I'm a Louis Rossmann viewer so I'm pretty skeptical of the "good things" that Apple has done recently. They look more like a strategy so that right to repair doesn't become law. They don't want to loose control.
But still, a good thing is a good thing and I have to admit that they've done good things recently. Also I wish for your business to be doing good.
Why did I write all this? I don't know. Please don't think I'm weird I have time to waste. I'll go waste it on something else because I'm looking like a fool.
OK, just buy iPhone SE new and keep repairing it until it fails. I don't think buying anything from non-business is a good idea, unless you have the expertise to examine it.
Skipping a retailer and buy from source is one thing, blind purchase without professional knowledge is another.
Ebay is a really good place to buy phones for low costs, but you need to know how to use it and recognize likely scammers
How ironic, a scammer commenting on a video about scammers replying to a comment talking about scammers

Hey Hugh Jeffreys thanks for the information video about buying used mobile phones any phones that I buy are a shop called CEX the phones that they sell are really good ones I have never seen a fake phone in my life I don't know what they look like.
I once bought a icloud locked Iphone 5s from a friend. 2 weeks later, he told me that he stole it from a kid (passing in the hall @ HS). I was pissed.
And if you're in UK, N.Ever sell to someone who pretends to be deaf and wants to communicate through e-mails because, by the time you realize the paypal e-mail you got saying that the money was hold until you deliver the phone is a scam,.... you're screwed.
No, the Police canNot do anything, Not even if you have an app installed to prove them where your stolen/lost phone is because.... they are helpless - the law there doesn't actually empowers you in retrieving it. Try it, with an old phone, then come back to tell me to be quiet.
Should also mention being able to log in with your Samsung account if it's a Samsung phone. Since Samsung made 2 factor authentication mandatory there's the 403 error where Samsung won't let you log into your account on that phone essentially making it a parts only phone.
