A tip to make this strat even better. Make the paper 3 by 3. Laminate it. Small erasable marker and small eraser. More portable, more compact, more reusable, and better for the environment.
+Garrett Krahn eraseable is good if you have the time/capability. I still do pen and paper because the back of my pen is a stylus that i use to glyph.
+Collin Williams I decided to use Memrise to learn the glyph language (Memrise is recommended by Tim Ferriss for rapid acquisition of languages, and has the glyph language as a learnable language), and began practicing P8's. Through a few days of intense focus, glyphing on our local 26 portal P8 farm, I'm hitting a ~70%+ 5/5 accuracy by memory... thanks to your encouragement. :)
My main question.... if you are using paper and pen, are you walking around with a ton of paper, or just not glyphing a lot? Because a 4 pass on that 26 portal farm (closely spaced enemy portals with axa, axa, force amp, turret on all of portals) is 104 glyph hacks per burnout. That would be a lot of paper!! And especially a lot to carry around!!
I usually had 100 glyph sheets in my car (600 hacks total) at any given time. Now I just have them down. I found glyphing enemy 8 farms proved the best option for learning/gear/AP
+Collin Williams Interesting. I do hope that you are recycling the paper, as well as using recycled paper, and (optimally) printing it double sided. It is important to care for nature.
I've been able to bump that number from 70% accuracy to 80% accuracy in a day, 100% by memory, through ~3 or so hours of solid glyph hacking exclusively on Level 8 portals. I received my gold badge last night (6000), and I'm now at.. 8376 points. No sheets. Personally... I like not having to carry sheets of paper with me :) I'm fine with sacrificing some accuracy now... to have paperless freedom forever.
I recommend using the command Channel to request slower Glyphing.
I simply memorized the names of the glyphs, the shape comes naturally when you remember the name. The fact that the sequences usually create some kind of sentence makes it even easier. Its possible to guess a glyph in case you missed it.
My technique has been to completely ignore the real names given to the glyphs and just make up my own based on what the glyph looked to me like "pipe", "bridge", "hat", "witches hat" etc. its not perfect as there are several with the same "name" to me but it was a big improvement on just trying to "memorize the patterns" I did try a third party app that allowed you to trace the glyphs on the screen as they appeared, but they just went by so fast that it actually made me worse.
I did the same exact thing - I never attempted to learn the name of each glyph, I simply just gave each shape my own set of names
The 5 glyph patterns make a sentence sequence. By learning the actual glyph names, the sentences make sense, and the patterns become easier.
The first person to achieve Onyx Translator recommended learning the actual names. I figured that it was great advice.
Turns out it was :)
Cool I do the same thing! Bowtie, canoe, community cup, plateau, house roof, 🤣
@@chesterha11 "Bowtie" haha I know the exact glyph you're talking about! It tends to come up in sequence with Journey and Hide on an L3 glyph hack, so I just call them "Tuxedo, Bowtie, Cufflinks" 😂
I use the similar way but in my native tongue
I'm going to make a magnetic glyph board and just place 123 magnets on the ones that pop up.
Dont know about your memory but you have some sense of humour :D
I struggle to remember the first glyph I have to watch the first one then close my eyes so I don’t forget
I just got the app "Glyph Mastery", and drilled on it for a little while when I had time to kill and wasn't near a portal. It wasn't long before I understood the glyphs as words, which made them simple to recall. Now I'm just honing techniques to trace faster without missing dots, since some glyphs like _open all_, _close all_, _portal_, _chaos_, etc. are more time-consuming. Bending lines or tracing a bit past a dot can help make faster glyphing more smooth and accurate, since any line which doesn't hit a dot will correct itself.
I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this yet (I didn't want to sort through all of the comments), but there is a free app in the Google Play store called "Glypher" which lets you practice glyph hacking and learn the names of the glyphs. That way, when you are playing Ingress, you only have to remember the sentence, not the pattern. Example: Remembering - "Question Hidden Truth", instead of "Wonky Question Mark" - "Broken Shopping Cart" - "Bow Tie". The settings let you choose individual glyphs or full strings. I use it and usually score 80% to 90% depending on the difficulty of the incoming message.
great set of tips/tutorials for us new people. Thank you. I watched 101 and 102 and this before going out and got to level 4 in 3 days in a fairly rural area.
There's a free app available on google play store called Glyphon that does essentially the same thing right on your phone's screen eliminating the need to carry a paper and pencil around with you while glyph-hacking which would be very cumbersome to say the least.
For me it was simply a case of 1) Practice. Practice. Practice, and 2) don't give the glyphs funny names. Learn the names. Within three days of "Practice. Practice. Practice", you should have a lot of them sorted (Depending on how much you're playing), and you'll also sense the repeat messages, plus, if you know 75% of the glyphs in the message, actually knowing the words/reading the message can help give you that last glyph you're not sure about.
Agreed. Once you actually know the names, you can learn the sentences. And the brain will pair the sentences with the glyph patters, and will better store the sequence in memory.
Some people might have a hard time "just" learning the glyphes so this is a quite good method for them. + they eventually learn them on the road while still getting the good loot. The laminating idea is very good.
Wow! Dude, you're awesome. We are learning so much from you. Thank you 👍
I tried the same thing. I couldn't draw fast enough.
Didn't know about glyph hacking before this vid. Thanks Collin.
I found that spending about an hour in a glyph hacking practice app, or just learning the names does wonders. Then all you will have to memorize is one sentence.
Tried it today using the tracer sheets on L8 portals. Does not work for me. The sequence is too quick for me to write it down. I guess I will have to keep memorizing.
Where can we get a copy of that sheet with all 80 glyphs on it? Studying that could be helpful too.
Great tips for a new agent. Thanks! !!
I'm team blue and this helped me out alot thank you i only just started too. I'm level 4 almost 5 I believe
Go resistance oh yeah!
-The Con
appreciate you for this, it's a great idea.
where is the glyph hacking page link to download?? it isn't in the comments below?
Awesome. Now I will walk around everywhere with sheets of paper on a clipboard, a pencil, and my phone... As if a phone on it's own wasn't bad enough. Lol just kidding nice video though.
I tried the whole writing it down method, but that doesn't work for me. I just remember what the shapes are and their names. My accuracy rate runs about 95%, but that's for 4 glyphs or lower. I've only attempted 5 twice and got 100%
the main problem I have with it is the huge pause before it lets you draw them and the light flash it does to blank your memory before you start..
Hi Collin Williams!
I really like your Videos an helped me a lot, but one think I'm not able to figur out - how the hell have I to draw the "imperfect" glyph??? Not like shown, it always show as incorrect.... any advice?
Daniele Defilippo Imperfect is the only "trick" glyph. So you start at the center then draw the "triangle section of it. Then draw the "tail" then you have to connect the "tail to the end of bottom end of the triangle WITHOUT HITTING THE MIDDLE DOT AGAIN.. essentially double drawing the line without the middle dot
Thanks a lot :D
Hello, I would like to see someone use this technique... because I often have my hands full of my phone, carrying a sheet of paper plus pen (in a ready-to-write position) seems quite strange. But whatever works for people, right? My way is straight - learning to know the glyphs by their names so that I can understand the messages, it helps repeating words instead of the line mess. I have 90+% accuracy but unfortunately I do not meet P8s in my area.
I have a desk portal, this works great at work!
+Collin Williams is allowed to use Glyph Predictor? Its too hard to remember and i think its better use the predictor than the tracer sheet. I didnt installed it yet because i dont know if is allowed to use. Pls answer to my comment, i only trust you. Im Enlightened, lvl 5
Glyph predictor acts as an overlay so it would Violate the Ingress TOS
you can use it, it won't get you banned for that, just don't share screenshots of you using it
Jusi learn the language, the glyphs have a meaning and it makes it easier to remember them
I give the glyphs names of my own.
This is hilarious 😂 I would die laughing if I actually saw anyone doing this in public. Practice makes perfect, learn the real names. You don't need pen and paper.
Agreed. 1000%. And I don't even play anymore.
The advantage to knowing the words rather than using names for things shaped like the glyph is that the glyphs form sentences which makes it easier to remember the sequence, e.g. create future not war is easier to remember than slash, right bracket, , big mountain.
But I'm not going to carry around paper and write it in the field. Instead, there are free apps to help you learn the glyphs. Glyph Mastery on IoS and Glypher for Android.
Even if I get distracted and miss seeing a glyph, I can often figure out what goes there.
+Collin Williams I tried your Glyph Sheet but in the haste of glyph hacking I found myself using dots that didn't belong to the current glyph. So I asked my coworker to fixed that for me, and I think her version is better, would you like to take a look?
drive.google.com/open?id=0B_K5_2Vrq6_VN21IdG5zeVpPVU0
I didn't know any tricks when I started glyphing, so I just struggled through until I learned them all. It was damn frustrating until I got somewhere between gold and platinum.
Why dont u create a database of the glyphs u found and set it open?
TheRealShadow There's already several websites that have lists of all the glyph combonations. The only thing my info would do is show a overall probability of getting certain glyph sequences, but digitizing that information would be a tooooooooon of work and I just don't have the time for that right now
Discussing colour you have on your t-skjorte.
Does it matter at which point I start tracing from?
It doesn't matter where you start, but I recommend starting at one of the 2 "ends" since starting in the middle increases the chance that you'll accidentally hit a spare and screw up your score while trying to double back
chrisg905 if it is a closed glyph start anywhere, like ALL. Any dot will do.
If the glyph has ends, start from any side for easier glyph hacking.Until version 1.71 you could redraw the same part of a glyph a lot of times, useful for when you miss one dot on a line, like in CREATE, you can go back and forth over the same line to redraw the missed dots. But on 1.72 and 1.74, you can't do that too many times, you can only go back once. Doesn't works on corners, if you miss a corner, forget it, go for the next glyph.
For instance, if don't you start in one of the ends, go forth, back then draw the glyph, it will work. ENLIGHTENED, you start in the midle dot, draw the triangle and then redraw one of the vertices to make the semicircle. It will pass.
This also means you can start tracing anywhere.
Genius !
in my experience the glyph's comes waaay to quickly for this.. and its also very anoying that you need to find a place to sit and write it down.. I even tried some of the apps to trace the glyphs.. and i think those suck too.. so i guess its back to just training my memory and learning the glyphs.
WiggersART for walkers I like using a clipboard. If you're driving then you really shouldn't be glyphing while driving anyways so you should already be pulled over.
Since I'm right handed I usually have my phone in my left hand and have the glyph sheet and pen ready before long pressing hack. Then once the sequence is done I drop the pen and prep my finger to redraw
Are you on resistance or enlightened
Enlightened, that's why he's wearing green
Thank you Colin. From @GrumpyCuss
Niceeeee👍
when the complex hack appear, 5 glyph's hack is cannot use paper..... only if you can per 0.6 second record a glyph.... but I think this is impossible... haha
For the Android, MemoGlyph is an awesome app to learn glyphing. When I would have a break at work, I would knock out 5-10 minutes of training. In about a week, I am completely fluent in the shaper's language.
Get the android app called Glypher for practice glyph patterns with names.
Dry erase board maybe?
Link to the sheet? Don't see in the comments....
Christopher Herbert @1 the link actually ended up in the video description
Sometimes I get the weird sense that Ingress is a tricky way Google is training up an army, complete with a secret language. ;-)
WillsWords I've sometimes wondered the same thing,. Then I remember how little overall coordination there is in both RES and ENL communities (I dare you to try organizing all the players in your city to pick even just a common spot to meet without getting decent) and I stop worrying.
However Ingress players will be very useful in post apocalyptic scenarios since we'll know the local areas and be able to navigate by landmarks.
Wouldnt work here it rains most the time. I need to learn the names haha
Ok, There is no way I am standing in the middle of the street with my phone in one hand a bit of paper against the wall and drawing symbols O.o
I will however use this tactic on the portal I have at home :)
Great tip! But I just don't print stuff out anymore, and as I ingress 90% of my time on a bike, a pen and paper is just too cumbersome for me. And since this is a memory based game, the more you glyph, the more your brain will be trained to memorize those glyphs!
Android Users can use Glyphon - play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=info.loadlimits.android.glyphon2&hl=en
guys anyone khows if the game comes in to WP????? and when.....?
Nikos Xronis no listed WP plans. took a year for iOS and that's a much larger potential user base
Collin Williams ohhh!!! well i see... soo atm i will not buy any WP :D
I keep forgetting to glyph hack. I'm always so scared of being seen.
Check out www.faxmelior.info/ingress/IngressGlyphMemorizationGuide.htm for more tips on how to memorize all those glyphs...
This guy is from Pluto!! Lol
I have an enemy portal right before my home. so yeah, I can play from home
This is a great idea! May I suggest that you re-do the tracer sheets so that the dots line up correctly? If you try to draw a straight diagonal line (for "create" or "destroy," for example) it's quite wiggly on these sheets. I created my own tracer sheets (with straight lines) by copy/pasting the glyph grid www.glyphtionary.com/glyphs/thumbs/Calibration-Grid.png into a word doc:
Joan M Thanks Joan I'd been meaning to fix that for a while but kept forgetting. New link has the corrected version using the dot template you linked to above.
Collin Williams Thanks, Collin. Your revised sheet prints out much more clearly than mine did (my grid dots were not solid enough.) I do think that ultimately the better overall strategy is just to learn the things. Here are some really useful tools to that end:
Glyph memorization guide:www.faxmelior.info/ingress/IngressGlyphMemorizationGuide.htm
Glyphtionary glyphtionary.com/
Anki Spaced Repetition Learning program (you have to also download the Ingress Cards into the program) play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ichi2.anki&hl=en
Glypher (glyph simulation program; good for any time you have to wait, in line at grocery, in Doc's office, etc) play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dmidroid.ingress.glyphs&hl=en
ENL L10 agent JoanTheFrog
Joan M I completely agree learning is the best way in the long run. That's why i mention writing the names above the symbols after you get em correct. I rarely use my sheets anymore since that technique got them drilled in my brain but you also get points using the sheets method versus just using glypher. Glypher is an awesome app though if you have spare time with no portals nearby and I will second your recommendation of it!
You need to be fast as hell to do this!
How do I engage slow-mo on my phone?!
iCrille Swe once you get it down you'll be all good to go. You can even get 30%+ speed bonus on lvl 8 glyph hacks
iCrille Swe Get shitty phone that can barely run ingress. You'll get it slo-mo alright, but it can often jam the drag and you might miss connections in the glyph hack attempt. Other than that it's always about practice, just like maths, you won't learn to count unless you practice, there is no other way.
tbh, I did no glyph hacking because I thought I couldn't get it, I tried to name the glyphs to remind them easy, that's not the way it works, if you know the names, you get the sentence and then it will be much more easier to do.
I used to do this as a noob
Wisper the necessary information, must have voice.
I make words for every glyph. I live in Argentina, END looks like the shape of my country so it is Argentina for me. You don't live in Argentina? It looks like a field too. You don't like fields, you are a destroyer? Ok, it's a burrito.
You just need some imagination for most glyphs... and a LOT of imagination for others like FOLLOW/LEAD, I call them... sh*t.
Sometimes even Batman appears to solve all the glyph CONFLICTS xD
You like,Scott manley but for ingress :D
Furkan BULUR He sciences so much betterlier than I science, but thank you.
just get the app tracer
hi Collin,
here over view of ALL the 4-glyph hack sequences!
you can choose at the top 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 or 5 glyph hack sequences.
www.ingress.tv/4-glyph-hack-sequences.html
Grtz
or you could just download the glif predict app.
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chibatching.glyphpredictor&hl=en
You should have named it and traced it for us :)
Love your tips....but this one is horrible. Sorry. It's exactly what I tried when I first started. There was no time to do it. Now, this is "simple" glyph to slow things down.
I'm resistance. But you were very helpful. Thank you
Oh for eff sake. Just practice offline using a glyph hacking practice app and learn what each glyph represents. U don't have to use pen and paper. XD Can u imagine running about and juggling a phone, a paper and a pen when you're outdoors and glyph hacking?
mdzz
Lol cheat. Maybe it's not cheating but it seems like cheating
It's a waste of time and attention and paper. Better to actually learn the glyphs.
@@hybby its a tool to help you learn
Ask any of my ex girlfriends XD
This is hilarious, spend time actually looking at the glyphs as you learn them and if need be get some sort of trainer glyph program that will quiz you on your glyphs. I have never seen a single person use this method and I find it hilarious. I have however seen people use third party applications and I think they are 100% cheaters. Glyphing isn't meant to be easy, so put in the work you lazies.
How is using an app cheating? Wouldn't using this paper and pen "tip" be cheating by that same logic?
Khanin the Uhnahkian the app allows you to trace the first few glyphs then predicts the rest right on the screen so you don't need to do any work. It is against the TOS to have a third party app running over ingress. So yes using an app is cheating. The paper and pen tip doesn't break any ingress terms so it technically isn't cheating but it is hilarious.
Brandon Capelle I probably won't be glyph hacking just yet but I wanted some tips. I agree, this is hilarious! I wasn't sure about an app. Didn't seem "practical"
FOR THE RESISTANCE
your going bald!
+Ashish Gupta What is it with you and my mom constantly bringing this point up ;P
+Collin Williams Well since your a video host i figured you might not have noticed :P
dude. not cool.
There's an easier way. Just learn the actual words that the glyphs represent, and then write them out. All the glyph sequences make sentences, and have something to do with the game - and frankly, the more glyphs in a sequence, the more sense the sentence makes, the easier it is to remember, and the faster you can write the glyphs. Not any different than learning the alphabet, then learning to write words. Stop using crutches.
what a gay misleading title
+joão Miguel you can (and I do) get 100% accuracy with this method.
+Collin Williams there are apps for that ( it's called glyph predictor), way more practical than walking down the street with a book of sheets.
joão Miguel Using those apps violates the Ingress TOS so this way keeps it 100% legal
No it doesn't lol, did you actually read the ToS? It says "you may not access the product or content through any technology or means other than those provided by Google...", translation is any kind of intrusive app that may mess with the game. The app I referred to is an overlay, which is in No Way intrusive. If you still doubt it, why would an illegal app be in Google Play?
+joão Miguel overlays violate section 2f of the TOS. Overlays obscure. And niantic doesn't control the app store. You can also find spoofing apps in the Google app store but that doesn't mean they're okay with TOS
