I would like it if Niantic would declare that handing your phone to your passenger so that you can focus on driving is okay. The way I see it, you're physically present and actively participating, so I feel that it's still in the spirit of the game, and it encourages people to be safe. (And no, I'm not asserting that Niantic is okay with it now. The last time I publicly expressed the desire for Niantic to make this declaration, I got shouted at by a ton of people who thought I was saying that Niantic already supported this.) But it's their game and their rules, so it's up to them.
As for the timer overlay app: I don't personally find such a thing useful (the clock works just fine for me), but I never really considered it to be a violation, since my understanding is that it doesn't interact with the Ingress application in any way. If it was a violation, then I'd assert that using messaging apps with "chat head"-style overlays would violate, too.
Zero respect for backpackers, spoofers, bots, Cerebro users and the like.
Robert Walker Amateur allows for such handing off. I can have my 10 year old unlicensed use my radio and call sign if i am supervising but don't want to chat or i'm busy gaming.
Robert Walker I think giving your device to someone to do something on it for you is totally ok as long as you play together with that person maybe he know what link to make for that really complicated multilayer you are making with your friends so he makes the link for you or you are outside your car paying for the gas inside the pump station and your portal is being attacked so he takes your phone and charges tit because he doesn't have a key i think thats fine as long as you are playing the game
Robert Walker if an exception were made for driving, why not do his portal hack while your friend gets you both hot dogs at a vendor? Or while he's chatting up a couple girls playing for the same faction and they don't seem to mind? You get into the habit of doing it while one of you is driving, and it gets easier to rationalize doing it in other scenarios, and weeks or months later one of you is playing the other person's account for the weekend cuz they had to go on some serious business thing and knew they won't be able to pull away. This is way more egregious, but where's the harm right? Who's gonna know? It's just a little thing..

Exceptions WILL be made. People rationalize this all the time, and I am not arguing for or against this. I'm just explaining how some people find themselves being more of a jerk than others, cuz we are each capable of this behavior. It's wrong when other people do it, but if for some reason we find a need to do it, well that's different. It's just a little thing. It doesn't hurt anybody. But if we notice a stranger doing it, maybe someone on the other faction, "oh I can't believe they have the nerve!" I call this a combination of subjective perception of reality coupled with Us vs Them tribal mentality. We rock. They suck. Games like this actually encourage this kind of thinking. It's par for the course, really. And then to learn that Niantic discourages this? Can they police it? Why break ppl up into two separate teams if you don't expect them to use every possible means at their disposal to win?
I don't personally feel it can be policed to have all these extra TOS infringements. If they can't code the game to make 3rd party apps obsolete, people will find apps that make the game more bearable for them. Is that wrong? Probably. I found a tutorial app for the glyphs. It doesn't help me while Ingress is running, but it helps me learn and practice. I rationalized that's okay. Other people may be unhappy. They're like "why don't you learn by trial and error in the game like we had to?" Maybe they have a point.
I read there's an app other people use where it actually predicts what the glyphs will be and shows you little reminder glyphs on the screen as you input them. Woah. I can't rationalize that one, but I can see why others would be okay with that. I can also see that slippery slope. How easy it would be to rationalize. It's no big deal. Who is it hurting? No one will know. etc. There's probably apps that automate the glyph thing so people don't even have to learn them. Where's the fun in that? That's not for me, but other people are probably totally okay with that, and it's impossible to police it. Whether I'm upset with people cheating like that or not, there's nothing I can do about it.

Zachs Mind I don't really see it as a slippery slope, since the situations in which an exception would be allowed would be pretty clearly stated: those where an agent who is actively participating in Ingress cannot manipulate their phone for safety reasons (e.g. driving). The hot dog and chatting scenarios you mention would be clearly out of bounds. Personally, I feel like it doesn't matter where you draw the line, there will be people who will look for any excuse to cross it. So I figure you draw the line as clear as possible where it will do the most good. Those who choose to try to justify going over the line would probably have done so anyway.
Incidentally, I would also support manipulating the phone on behalf of an agent who is blind, but again, only when said blind agent is actively participating.
That's just it though. it's personal and no two people are going to agree on everything. The line you draw in the sand and the line someone else draws in the sand will probably not be in the same exact place. I'm not saying that's a bad thing. I'm not saying that's a good thing. I'm saying that's what happens. We draw lines in the sand, but the sand doesn't care.
Win trading is a very fine line of playing.
The game essentially evolves around win trading.
Win Trading specifically is Trading a portal back and fourth on purpose for extended periods to level a player to level 8, or purely to gain ap between the 2 players in general.
Then again, It's technically win trading that the other team loves to setup these 20k hits for me by trying to field stuff all the time. But it's not. That was just a funny.
too many people are taking this game too serious and people are going to get hurt. there are violent players thats the biggest evil of ingress

I agree with everything, but making doublefisting illegal is stupid. I mean, what would be the alternative? A car stopping every 100m to hack?
It's safer (the driver doesn't have to focus on the game- no start/stops of the car) and you have a friend playing with you.
I see 0 harm in that. Backpacking etc is a whole new level of evil, but doublefisting? meh let them do what they want.
*edit* Timers too. Really. So having my tablet with me with timers is fine, but an overlay isn't. No logic in that either.
You would STILL be using a 3rd party app in the interest of the game.
Funny enough, even if you use your phone clock, it would still be considered illegal since the clock is a... 3rd party app.
In addition to that, trespassing on other's property is also evil.

If Niantic don't want us using IITC they should just do something about the stock intel map. It's soooo slow. I can understand making various plugins against the ToS but for me it's either use IITC and break the rules, or use the stock intel map and wait sometimes up to 20 minutes for it to stop freezing on me. And I have a pretty decent PC, I hate to think how it runs on low end machines.

I just want to say that it's harder to say what you really mean instead of saying the opposite and hoping that the other person can translate into your real meaning. The first thing people do when confronted is to deny it. The second is to minimize it (tiniest of mistakes), and the third is to blame the other person.
I know it's odd that a complete stranger would take the time out of his life to correct your grammar, and if we were having a conversation I might not bother correcting you. Instead I would just walk away and not give you any feedback.

The 2,000 item cap came about because Niantic screwed up. They created a deal with ZipCar where Ingress players could enter the car's license plate number as a passcode to get more gear. The screw up came about when players realized that the ZipCar license plate numbers were sequential and continued entering them as passcodes until they had 10,000 items! Niantic introduced the 2k item cap and the agents that had 10k items could no longer hack until they used up all of that gear.
3:32 the timer on your car is also an "app" so i'm not allowed to use a timer on my phone (i don't but not because of the ToS) just because it's an app.

Elhanan Maayan technically a timer only violates TOS if it's an overlay. Although really no one gives a crap if people use timers. Hence why it's not high on the meter

Thank you for this video. Clearly indeed to read more carefully. I'm guilty of the " double fisting" one while my wife drives. I'll stop that now.
Second, I would like to add " reporting false portals " to that list. I've seen several common restaurants report a portal at their shop just for the free advertising. Some agents will report street signs and " cultural centers " I've personally witnessed some one build a work of art, report the portal, then move it some where else.
I propose that a neutral faction be set up that can investigate portals to confirm good ones and report false ones.

Also, i don't know about that "Guardian hunters". It WAS part of the game. You wanna hold a portal for guardian take the correct actions.
It's more about the use of third party tools to find guardian portals.
The point is moot now, anyway. Guardian is not a thing any more.
Only Guardian Hunting and GPS Spoofing are really bad. The others are tbh really not big deals. When I log out and back into Ingress I get 3 account options. I could make an account in each if I so choose and the game Will Let Me.
Timers are a tool, not against the TOS, because it´s doesn´t affect the app.
I've always let my girlfriend play for me while I drive. I never knew this even was a problem.

I just started playing Ingress. What's the difference between capturing a portal in the middle of nowhere (a "guardian" portal) and any other portal? Isn't it all right to go capture any portal the other faction holds, especially if it's an anchor to a large field, which are often in the middle of nowhere?
Guardian is the trophy set that you get for holding on to a portal for a certain amount of days. The 3rd party app he was talking about lets others see how long you've held on to that portal, allowing them to destroy it before you can get the trophy. Basically trolling.

When 10 people are dedicating 10+ hours each to setup fields spending lots of $$$. Or someone previous took care of hundreds of guardian for hundreds of days you can certainly bet it's a group of people who take ingress very seriously

Item cap is no problem for me. Resonators (lvls 5, 6, and 7) can be another form of power cubes. The resonators are what take up the most space in my inventory and never seem to run out of them.
I created a 200,000 MU field (enlightened) with the anchor portal on a small island (my work) and a spoofer destroyed it the next day I was standing next to the portal and no one was there it is very demoralizing :(

i mean you can even automate the creation of bots.

Subscriptions with extra inventory has been great.
But also how the 8 evils are all used in pokemon go, all the time. Though spoofing is still an issue. :(

Getting rid of the guardian badge would eliminate some of the badwill in the game. Maybe when Ingress goes to 2.0 will eliminate some spoofting but because of Android being such an open system, always going to be ways around it. Mule/Backpack accounts, suggestions have included making all key drops public so they get exposed or better yet, one capsule drop and one capsule pick up per day per agent. That would also add an element of strategy to the game.
As of April 2 2018 they killed guardian badge the people who use illegal means won't be able to hunt your portal because it's pointless.
well, in our local area we have a military training area, and there are people capturing the portals definitely during times when there are no visits allowed, and these are long periods of time. (and yeah, I'm sure it's not the soldiers playing Ingress)
Also I think it should be a crime for higher level agents to hunt down lower level agents because they destroyed their beloved portal; you don't know how long they own this portal. Especially those, that already have the 150 days badge and just are emotionally attached to it. Especially this goes for real life, how sick do you have to be to threaten a player in real life, just because he's picked "the wrong side".
Ethan told me personally in March that the servers crash at 2500 items, so cap won't be going up
Cedar Wiseman I've heard the 2500 from Ethan before but better coding and more servers would help with that and make sure the game doesn't slow down/crash. Alternately having items in capsules not count against inventory would solve the problem. Since then the server would only have to be queried for an additional 100 items at time over the 2000 limit putting it at 2100 total in temporary query even when examining items in a capsule. That's is why most programmers call hooey on the 2500 server crash issue.
well when you talk about win trading only one thing comes to mind and that is Ingress First Saturday. Technically it would be classified as win trading because of both factions holding what seems to be a mini anomaly.
David McGowan Niantic sponsored events are the one place where players are allowed to met at a designated time and do exactly that. So first Saturday's and Anomalies are the only place where that's okay

Not to play from home, but to finally convince my phone I am not, in fact, in the neighbouring village, but standing right next to the bloody portal...
In fairness, that only happened once, but my GPS is ridiculously inaccurate at times. Turning it off and on again helps sometimes, but other times... When it showed me in the village, turning it off and on again would reset my location to where I actually was for a couple seconds, before drifting kilometres away again. Phone, please...

what about "approximate location" or "power saving location" on android its not really spoofing but it uses your approximate location by detecting wifi near you sometimes it moves you on top of wifi's nearby because it is approximate...is that spoofing? it comes automatically on on android but i changed it to gps instead...
Deadtoad5 we actually cover that in a protips episode. As long as you're actually at the location and not doing it to spoof, but instead to correct your location then no one considers it cheating

Deadtoad5 honestly if you're not drifting far (more than a few meters) most players I have met don't care much, but I appreciate someone that looks to make sure they're always in the clear.

if it's doing an overlay then it breaks tos. if it's a completely. separate app then that's different. I also have an episode to help with glyph hacking. check the ingression playlist

How do you feel about using duplicate or plainly fake portals? I've only been playing for a month and a half, but around where I live I've seen a monument with three portals, a bridge with two, a portal with a photo of a novelty spirit bottle on somebody's coffee table (with a dirty couch behind), portals of temporary art installations, and of street art that has long been painted over.

Yesterday I turned over portal to my side in the middle of nowhere (by jervis) and the hate targeted towards me from various players was stunning :-( I came home rather fast without playing along the way because I was scared someone could be waiting for me :-( Obviously it was someones guardian .... but yesterday I had no idea what that is... I had too look it up :-(

Actually a hugh reason i put off playing ingress at first was spoofers Its best to report spoofers if possible there should be a special badge for finding a real one LOL that would defiantly put off losers who deside to ruin ingress by spoofing..
In favour of spoofing, here us my question to you sire: have you ever been to a rural location? There is no sign of a portal in 20-30 miles radius. How are we supposed to play the game then? Its not like I have spoofed or something.its just disheartening to see 0 portals/pokestops near my work or residence.
I just discovered IITC today, but haven't used it for anything in-game. If I use the intel map in Firefox, it crashes (usually before I can navigate the page to the area I want to see). All of the other browsers I've tried on my phone (Galaxy S4), won't let me scroll the map, even after changing the URL with "vp=m". Is there a game-legal solution, or am I screwed until I get a new phone?
Troy McGuire Not sure if this is still relevant, but I use Intel Ultimate. It's literally just an app version of the stock map
Ill never ever do any of this stuff, However, I cant help but notice that most of these problems are very hard to enforce. Any ideas how to fix that? Nvm, after reading the comments it would appear terms of service is a lost cause.
What is the "ruling" on those Android phones that can "lock" (disable?) their gps, giving them more time to smash/deploy on portals while "driving by"? Not quite the same as "spoofing" as you were physically there, but still a touchy subject where I come from. Don't think it is possible with an iOS device ... :/
+David Ostwald I hadn't heard of such a feature before, but it sounds like it would be considered a form of spoofing, since it makes your phone think you're in a spot when you really aren't. "Spoofing" is really just a fancy way to say "fake", and doing that could be very easily called "Faking your location".
How evil would you rate driving walking speed on your mobility scooter, because well obviously (when you own one) walking doesn't really work for you?
ardawen I would rate that at 0 evil unless the person is solely doing that to cheat the trekker badge. Otherwise that's just a legitimate medical condition and it would violate federal law and ADA regulation to discriminate against it. Even if it isn't a legitimate condition it's just a matter of laziness. I can do 6kph on my bike easily and get trekker points
Comparing aggravated assault to having a "Backpack Account" is pretty bogus. A account created just for storage isn't hurting anyone.
Bradley Behrens Obviously in the real world they are very different. It was more an illustration of the various levels of offense. while "Double fisting" might be like jaywalking or something most police officers would ignore. Assault is something that can land a small punishment (30 days in jail). But still isn't the "murder" level of ingress violations which would be spoofing.
If Ingress doesnt like Win Trading then what is IFS?

Still would much rather use something like iitc, Intel Map is still slow as shit period in comparison, except for maybe using it in Chrome.
I'd say this video still won't stop most people from doing otherwise, up to them to decide whether to actually play "fair" or not, though honestly I think some of this is unnecessary.
Last one being spoofing. Yeah, not even about to go into how close that is to being illegal. There's a lot of implications there.
Why is Europe not included on the background map?
Pontus Wennergren I'm US based so when I just zoomed out of the intel map by default it was more centralized on the US. The other trick is in order to maintain a 16:9 aspect ratio for a 1080p video some stuff has to get cut off so I can't realistically fit the whole map in there without distorting it using anamorphic widescreen.

Technically spoofing in the game is no longer available ( I tried a bunch of times and failed all those times, because I didn’t have a car just going out with my family and felt like hack my way out of that small problem but failed) ingress made it impossible to do that so don’t even bother doing it just play by the rules
Sadly spoofing can still be done especially on rooted devices. At least as of last week when people were still spoofing PoGo which uses similar underlying cheat/spoof checks. But considering the point of the game is to explore, spoofing completely misses the point of the game that really makes it fun while also ruining the fun for others
Collin Williams basically for those people because the rooting process may be harmful for the device and I’m some of the types of people that prefer leave it the way is normally working

What about someone who is disabled or who has injured their arms?
Is their support worker allowed to operate the phone for them, if that person gives them clear instructions?
+Bethany Lowe we had a long discussion in a chat about something similar. If someone is under ADA privileged position as disabled then in that case US federal law would override niantic TOS

Multiply acounts, spoofing and hunting guardiand is the most evil ever!!!! Seriouslly this demotivates to play this game, hate it!
One phone per one account might eliminate some of that.

I don't but I can't help but notice the like 90% of the players in my area do.. As they will have almost the exact same name on both Unlightened and Resistance accounts.
Is your backdrop outdated? I've watched a view of your videos and as an L15 shouldn't you have 20500 xm max? I'm only a 14 and can carry 19000. 14.2k can't be right...
BTW I liked your video on speed hacking and which mods to deploy to farm fastest.
Matt Lew Yeah I've specifically kept the same backdrop for a while. I like it since although it shows the enlightened toping the world MU at that point. The enlightened were also getting decimated in my own cell. So it's a good cross faction mix and to me highlights how although I may be the loveable enlightened instructor I can have my ass kicked on my own home turf since ingress isn't just about 1 player

Do you shoot off xmp bursters and any other weapons to destroy enemy resonators to take over and turn a blue portal green? Also I'm only level two should I only try to take on portals of the same level and portals that have not even been touched yet? HELP

Zachary T You sure have more experience now but this could be useful for someone else.
Destroy resonators that are one or two levels above your level. They will go down easily. If you have time and a lot of XMPs, go for any level anyway.
A portal with 8 L1 resonators will fall easy, it will be a L1 portal.
A portal with just one L8 resonator will be a lot harder but still a L1 portal. Even harder if it has shields. But it can be easier if the resonator was hit earlier by someone else or if it decayed.
So look at your screen, if the portal looks whitish, the resonators are decayed. Go get that one too!
If you are a low level player and you can't take down portals or all of them are on your faction then trow links and make fields. Fields get the most AP for a single action, you'll level up fast and you'll be able to take down any portal you want.
Up to the fourth level you can go really fast, 5 and 6 are a bit harder. But at Lvl 5 you can take down anything. Shields? Google how to use Ultra Strikes! even US L1 are great against any shield (you will need quite some for an Axa shield ;D)
I'm a relatively new Agent. You've mentioned Guardian portals before. What are those?
+Adamemnon Spaz One of the achievements you can get in the game is called "Guardian", and you get it by keeping a portal under your control for a certain amount of days (150 to get the highest level). Basically, it takes a long time to get it, and if somebody rolls around on day 149 and takes it out, you have to start from day 1 again, basically. That's why it's seen as such a jerk move to take out somebody's Guardian, especially if they use a third-party app to figure out how long they've had it for.
why didn't u mention Lampje? That's the cerebro like version ENL use to trace us down
+TheRealShadow cerebro used to be a script that members of both factions used till the creator locked it down to resistance only and its the most well known. Also lampje runs a little differently from what I understand and its main core doesn't comm scrape although I still don't endorse its use.

also if somebody were to attack my guardian and I would ask him to maybe not destroy it and he says ok and leaves it and I would at a later point attack a portal and he would message me that's that his guardian portal and I would leave it alone since he also did when I asked would you consider this win trading?

But already spotted some parts that are inopperative by virtue of my country law.
11 or higher: Harassing players in real life because you're salty over losing a portal or something of that nature.
12 or higher: Assaulting or killing someone over the game.

Grant Paterson There has been more then 1 time where niantic has used a band hammer and at least temporarily for several weeks banned players that were identified using IITC. They havne't done it in around a year, but it still technically violates TOS even if most players don't care about it.
Collin Williams its one of those tools that can be a necessary evil to help with planning. Stock intel has got much better recently also so not so much use for IITC.

The win trade is bullshit because nobody gives a shit about the score outside game events and the game needs both sides to be equal in chance or it dies out due to boredom.
Lets take this situation. I live in a city with a lot of relatively high level agents of one side so the city is controlled by that side.
No problem for me, im high level enough level so i can clear out the city main anchors, also they build up high level farms so yea... They actually help me out (im one of the few other faction) (illegal byproxy?)
But low level or starting players of any faction have absolutely no chance of leveling up.
So if we agree on a 24-48-72 etc hour cease fire where we neutralise portals and nobody above lvl 6 does no action so low level players have a chance to grow and fight. Its considered illegal, but if you think about it, it's neccesarry.
Or better... Mark an arena by links where newbs can play and fight.
That would be not only ethical, but neccessary...nonetheless illegal...

1) tether your phone to your pc. 2) download an ios emulator and ingress 3) use cheat engine to alter some stats and transfer them
Don't do those things. Even if they are easy and you could take over whatever you felt like, and then technically 'spoof' the planet or leave some things in northern Africa. Seriously, this game needs server side VAC.

I tried to look into spoofing but was unsuccessful just to have a way to lock my actual coordinates as to reliably play the game as the games GPS is incredibly glitchy for me. I can stand on a portal hit "Hack" and get a portal out of range message because according to the app I suddenly jumped 70 or more meters through several building in a random direction. I register as being on the opposite side of whatever roads I'm walking along or am shown moonwalking away from my destination as I go forwards. About the only thing that works constantly is the tracking of what direction I am facing. It has worked to my advantage once or twice as it will sometimes jump me kilometers down the road to portals I otherwise would not have had the opportunity to go to.
+kirbuu That's most likely due to your phone's GPS or GPS settings. Try checking your GPS settings and making sure that they're set to high accuracy if you're on android. If that doesn't work you might want to look into getting a new phone. A new suggested phone episode is on the shooting schedule planned for November-ish release.

+Levi Heichou There is a very popular alternate intel map. Here's the full layout - On the player side I've yet to meet a player that care if you use the alternate intel as long as you don't use certain plugins (player tracker, etc). BUT It does violate TOS and in the distant past there were times where people were banned (temporarily or permanently) for using it. So there's both sides of the story.

Having someone of the opposite team deliberately help you is an unfair advantage. 2 players from opposite teams just sitting and helping each other gain AP can get 300,000+ AP per hour where as other players may be capped at not even 1/5th of that depending on where they live.

Yeah, and I shouldn't have to leave home to play Ingress, sometimes I just want to stomp guardians when I can't sleep and I shouldn't have to drive to another state to enjoy the game. Emil Niemi According to TOS anything that is IITC or an IITC plugin violates TOS since it is a third party app that is tying into t \he program. Although that's once again on the level where most players don't care about other players using it, but yes it's illegal
Collin Williams Okay! I just watched your Protips 6 video and there you showing in Intel about the "link" feature and that in the link it has the coordinates of the portal. So now I'm more clear how Maxfield works, it simply using these coordinates and then doing the math. So in that way, is it even IITC? As the only it does is parsing coordinates from the link and then I strongly believe everything else is just math to make triangles that follow the rules of Ingress portal linking.

Collin Williams you should mention bots. There have been quite a few examples. The EU XM eating bots, the AXA dropping bots, etc. Posing as players, but not players.
