A link is too long if you don't plan on making a field from it.

You can also use long links to stop an incursion by the other faction.
Instead of douche links, we call them "yolo links" in our local hangout

We have areas like this, however, it changes faction a couple times a day and not uncommon to be down there and have multiple players undoing what you do right behind you ....I'm only level 6, but a few high level players that play 24/7 and follow other players....so whats the deal with following players? I'm a small female- It's really the only down side to when I play- im almost certain to be followed in dense downtown areas.
121 km link thrown. And it held for nearly a week as another slightly shorter link was turned into a big multilayer field three times
alright, now that I got it I can finally take over my town, been planning my field an entire day but tomorrow's the day I'm going to do it
Collin since watching this video i have begun doing massive fields. coordinating with 3 other players we maintain a 150km field and the smurf tears are real.

hey just wondering what would be your biggest tip to leveling up on low levels
I am Oxcraig Level 4 and been playing for about a week with the resistance. I am in San Marcos, TX and have a problem. In the "downtown" area outside Texas State University there are many portals of both factions that when hacked I keep getting a communication error and restoring resonators I get an error stating that the restore failed. Any suggestions would be great.

our links range from 50 to 600km mostly because we have no portals
Really anything that passes near a closer portal would be close, so depending on how spaced out everything is where you live, you should make the links as short as possible.

I found that "fan"-fielding is quite effective, it creates fields upon fields when you do it correctly.
313 for linking, 1200 for a field, so you'll see a total of 1513AP for a field. Making two fields at once will result in 2713AP, one for the link, and 1200x2 for each field.
Why 313 for a link? I have no clue. Seems random.
As far as a length of a link you should throw, if you're in a downtown area, make links to the nearest portal possible.

oops as a level 2 player my 2nd link ever (before watching this video) i created a 3km link across two towns with a lot of portals. Haha i guess i wont do that again.

70kms is a standard link between Ararat and StArnaud, Australia
Finally the link across the Gulf of Mexico is down. I can now play all the island doors that got caught beach side. Longest link I've seen so far.
What I do is save my keys in a Capsule then I can get more keys for that portal. It helps if you wanna do good fielding. I have 2 keys for each of my 9 portal at work
@amorphus how can i destroy a L8 resonater ?
ronald harrington any player of any level can kill any resonator it just might take a ton of weapons. Of a portal is full level 8 resonayors and has full shielding it can take 6500 level 1 XMP's to kill it.
so all I need is 30 L4 xmp bursters and one ultra strike to kill it
How do I remove mods, and you can only add two mods? I' m only one level 3 right now.
Sethcha Koy Once a mod slot is filled it can’t be changed or upgraded. So pick your mods carefully

The new episodes don't mention my faction since it doesn't matter for unbiased instructionals. But many other episodes will tell you what faction your lovable instructor is :)
Lol I live in an area of one giant resistance field. I believe I have found the center of all the fields but it is a lvl 8 with mods and like 8 links going into it. I am only lvl 5
i made 3 links that are 17 kilometers from one town to another through a bunch of other towns and got 100 MU out of it, am i going to hell?
If your area is saprse enough that 17kn only nets 100MU then you are certainly free from hell. Nowif someone threw a 17km stray link through the middle of a big city downtown with no intent to field that's a different story. That 1 link could potentially screw up 1mil+ MU in fields. But long links are almost always okay if you're planning to close out the field even in super dense areas.

We made a huge field from a small island to the mainland 966km link and 192K field

Population isn't updated dynamically. So people temporarily being in an area won't increase MU scores. Base it off S3 cell population data

I made a 3km link in a city with lots of history
Lol I made a link today that was every bit of 30 miles long. From county to county and will prolly field in the next day or so as soon as I get to another that'll teach back to my hometown lol.. Make links as long as you can but make sure you field it soon.
Max. ingoing links to portal is 8192 :p
In my home town the SHORTEST link I can make is 78km... that's to the nearest town. Idk why I play this game

It's just shy of 12km from end to end...
Blue link in the top left that runs off the top is probably 15km...
When the otherside is dominant in the area any outside town is not right.

marcintomasz The mistake I corrected in Protips 1 was a mistake made in fielding 201 in regards to the order to throw links for the maximum fields
Why not four or five layers fields?
Multi layered fields are covered in fielding 201 (fixed version of 201 coming soon). This was just to cover the basics

+Cynthia Abernathy It can be trickier without a car but I know lots of players that are almost 100% on foot/bike/skateboard who do really well. Hitting areas with high portal density like taking a trip downtown is the best.

Literally I can’t make a single portal Bc my entire town (reaching WAAAAY farther than I care to find out) is covered in an enemy field and I can’t do much of anything about it.... thanks douches!
Screw this good guy crap! If you don't like my links, come kill them. If it's on your team, ADA that shit, and then kill the portal! Why is it that difficult?!

***** links from the same team are the bigger issue and ADA's/Jarvis's are relatively rare. There's many situations where a Random bad link has killed many a massive MU plans and hurt the team as a whole for the cycle. Not everyone HAS to be a team player, but this game involves a lot of playing as a team. I'd say on the average cycle I could easily toss 100,000 to 500,000 more MU for our checkpoints if it wasn't for bad team links and not having the ADA's to spare. So those bad links literally hurt the team
