Thanks for the info. I hired a company to prevent this but still pulled crab grass by hand in the heat of the summer. It became an obsession because I am so over crabgrass.
I did not split the pre-emergent application between spring and summer last year like Ryan suggested. And paid the price with some late summer crabgrass. I will follow his advice this year.
If I use prodiamine doing a split application in the spring, would I still be able to overseed in the fall? Soil temps cross 50 mid March, then across 65 beginning of may. So my last application would be early may, would I still be okay to overseed in early September?
Ryan, great to see new content from you. One thing you mentioned that made my ears perk up was experimenting with the idea of not applying a pre-emergent after a few years of no weed issues. 🧏🏼♂️. I like the sound of that.
I've never really used herbicides in granular form. I love my WDG Prodiamine. i've only used it twice, last fall, and 2 days ago, but it worked very well on my Zoysia by stopping winter weeds from successfully germinating, and Zoysia is more tolerant than many grass types so I have more wiggle room with my application rates. I keep Quinclorac and 2, 4D on hand for spot treating as needed, and a Spectracide product that has Quinclorac, 2, 4D, Dicamba and Sulfentrazone and that is inexpensive and works pheromonally well for me! I bought the Spectracide primarily because the Sulfentrazone would treat my previous nut sedge issue. One application cleared my lawn of sedge and most other weeds. Quinclorac and 2, 4D is safe on many newly seeded lawns too, so it is a great way to fight back weeds while trying to establish a new lawn or over seeding with tender new growth. Thanks for your channel Ryan! You're one of very few people I respect and like to watch for lawn care. Dang, I say that, and realize I hadn't subscribed, which I just fixed.
The weather and temps here in St. Louis, MO, is pretty crazy. Knowing when soil will be consistent at 50 to 55 degrees is really difficult, but I am waiting for it to happen. Got Green Cast online tool, and a soil thermometer to use.
Ryan, I am glad you mentioned at the end that you don't have to continue to apply these year after year. Once your lawn has reached a point where the grass and soil are functioning well, herbicides and pesticides can be used sparingly. Nothing wrong with hand pulling some stragglers as long as your lawn isn't too large. :)
Getting ready. I am not far from Iowa and waiting for rest of snow to melt and get those steady temps. Got the pre-emergent sitting ready to put down. Got a battery sprayer for xmas. Last year used hand pumping backpack which was brutal for my size yard.

Hi Ryan, Thanks for continuing to putting out quality content. I did a partial renovation last year after having irrigation installed, but a lot of weeds came up in the summer. The new turf appeared to do very well coming in, but now I'm at a stuck point because I hate seeing the weeds. I don't know if I should use pre-emergent this spring or should I just seed and then use the pre-emergent in the summer or fall. I'm in Maryland, so I have cool season grass.

Do have snow still on the grass, I m praying to start spraying, so I don’t get a bad case of snow mold, or even worse Jersey voles/moles... what’s the plan Coach.
Absolutely but the scope of this video was to talk about what can't be used with seeding so that people are not confused by it and to talk about seeding projects in spring or fall with tenacity in other videos about seeding itself
I did a full lawn renovation last year. But this spring I’m getting absolutely hammered by clover. Tall fescue and live in Tennessee. What can i use to control my clover problem without damaging existing healthy grass this spring?
Explain to me when I broadcast sprayed prodiamine and then bio stimulants, why spots turned brown year after year. Do I need to wait before spraying the bios? There was no disease but the grass pulled up easily. Reseeding was useless until fall.
I wonder if you use a granular product for the post emergent herbicide, if you apply it in the morning with the dew still on the blades or after a rain so it will stick, if it would still be effective?
Honestly it might not be a battle you can win. I would love to see someone just embrace it and go all in reel mowing very low like they do for poa greens
This is great information. I purchased Prodiamine 65 WDG and will be applying it for the first time this spring. Measured the soil temperature today and it is 45/46 degrees in Western WA. I am also planning to do detaching and liquid aeration. Can the detaching & aeration be done after applying the pre-emergent? Will detaching undo the pre-emergent barrier? Or will the preemergent barrier interfere in some way with the liquid detaching product? Or should the detaching & liquid aeration be done before applying the pre-emergent?

Thanks for the vid, informative as always - in your research, have you come across any studies showing the impact of pre-emergents on lateral spreading turf, so for example prodiamine slowing rhizome growth of Kentucky bluegrass?
I don't think I've seen one specifically on prodiamine and rhizomes but in general prodiamine tends to be the most harsh but if rates are appropriate it won't be anything earth shattering.
@@ryanknorrlawncare Prodiamine is the least harsh because its vapor barrier stays relatively shallow. Dithiopyr is next in terms of depth but it is not as long lasting. Pendimethalin moves rather deep in the soil.

I live in an area where a 17 year brood of cicadas is expected to emerge mid May and last through June. Will their emergence impact the vapor barrier of pre-emergents like prodiamine?
I live in that area as well. That is a great question. Also would the die-off of the cicadas alter our lawn fertilization plan? Dead cicadas in the lawn should be good for the grass, correct?
sorry if i missed it, but did you cover Mesotrione (Tenacity)? from what i have heared, this is one of the only preemergent that you can seed fescue, kyb, or rye with if you spray at the time of seeding.
I didn't cover tenacity in this video because it often confuses people thinking they can use it instead of prodiamine or similar when it's not intended for that kind of use.
A good watch, this will be my first year using prodiamine as I've never really needed it the last 10 years I've been in my home, I've mainly been able to keep up with spot sprays and have been good my yard hasn't really had weeds for years except for last year they were starting to come in heavier than ever before. Got some seed down in the fall and now I'm anxious to get out there and work. So prodiamine application needs soil to be 50ish and then watered in? Is there a too early or too late to apply?

Should I lay a pre and post emergent in the early spring? Should I mix it (granular) with fertilizer? Or should I fertilize later in the spring?
Apply pre in early spring, the do a pre with post in later spring. I would do all granular as it is harder to mess up. Try to use a product with low N as Ryan said if got good fert down in fall, won't need much Nitrogen in spring

Pull weeds by hand. Cut with a regularly sharpened blade, at the right height, twice a week. Water appropriately. That’ll work for any yard, organically treated included!

@@ryanknorrlawncare would it work to apply that for the seeding / over seeding and then maybe 5 or 6 weeks later put down a pure pre-emergent to carry through the rest of the season?
Hey Ryan, my grass took a hit last year near the end... My daughter was born and finishing up my school caused some issues in the lawn. It needs to be seeded, flattened out, and pre emergent. What do you think, I don’t want crabgrass but my lawn looks like it’s so patchy and you see the mower tracks of dirt. Do I risk the weeds this summer to fill in then take next summer for the million dollar view or can I achieve both this season. Thanks a lot, miss your vids!
Sounds like you might need to do some seeding this spring and not do the traditional pre-emergent this spring. You can still watch it closely and spray for crabgrass later before the plants get mature
I did a full reseed last Fall, but came in a bit thin in a lot of spots, so I did an overseed late November before the first snow down here in Des Moines. What would you recommend to help get the best results going in spring for the new grass and the seed that was laid down in late fall early winter? Thanks!
Soil test would be a good idea and then try to provide whatever might be lacking for nutrients there. If you didn't have the soil test then typically a starter fert for that young grass would be appropriate
So if my yard gets completely overrun by crabgrass (the while neighborhood does!) and doesn't have a lot of established grass right now, how can I prevent crabgrass AND do a spring seed?
Man you all in the US have it easy.. all those types of stuff for the lawn are banned / they are not for weeds in the grass, but rather on your driveway for example because it kills the grass. There used to be stuff like that here but now it is all about getting on your knees and pull weeds up
Hey Ryan. Greencast tells me that my current soil temp is 62 degrees. (KC) Past 24 hours has been 45. Past 5 days has been 40. Do I need to put down pre-emergent now or wait for warmer temps?
I put down about a cap full of that prodiamine those yellow prills on a small yard with some milorganite mixed in. It sprinkled for the past 2 days and 🌧 all day today. Will reapply likely in a few weeks.
Hey Ryan I live in Texas and have Bermuda grass. I put down a Pre-emergent in the beginning of Feb bc I was some weeds starting to show there heads. Then we had that big winter storm. Is my Pre-emergent still effective or will I have to put down another application? Thanks in advance.
Hey Ryan, I completed a KBG renovation in my front yard last fall but did have some clover show up. My plan was to overseed more KBG this spring to thicken it up, so I wasn't planning on using a pre-emergent. But ... since KBG takes time to grow, should I let the existing grass do its thing and use a pre-emergent to prevent any potential crabgrass from coming in?
I'd probably go pre-emergent and work to push the bluegrass. It will get going in the spring following a fall renovation and should do well without overseeding
For the podcast: what are your thoughts on Greenview Fairway Spring Fertilizer Weed and Feed + crabgrass preventer (24-0-6) that kills broadleaf weeds as well?
Ryan, question for you. I am planning on doing a spring overseed beginning of April. I would like to use tenacity as a pre-emergent after I aerate and thatch. Is this a good time to use tenacity to help prevent new weed growth even though I am planning on seeding? I have heard varying opinions? Thank you
@@ryanknorrlawncare Thank you Ryan for the information. I enjoy watching your videos. One more question. My lawn is well established at this point and have been working on it for about 3 years now. I was debating putting tenacity down about a month before over seeding to keep the weeds at bay instead of at the time of overseeding. What are your thoughts about when I should put the tenacity down? Is it better a month before or at the time of overseeding? Thank you for your time and thoughts.
One more question.. I fought ground ivy at my new house all last summer, I used tenacity to help. I just bought prodiamine but that maybe the wrong stuff the more I research. Should I wait and use a post emergent with triclopyr?
Ryan, I already invested in a big bottle of Dythiopir. You said it lasts a bit less than Prodiamine. Would you advise applying Dythiopir twice; early spring and then again in July? I am in North NJ.
Didn't talk about that as a traditional pre-emergent because it confuses people that they think they can use it just like these other products and it's only a temporary solution for seeding.
I need to do a full lawn level, overseed procedure to my lawn (New house, previously neglected). The current lawn has some patches of weed grass I’d like to get rid of. Should I avoid the pre emergent since I want to overseed and promote new grass growth? Just tackle that this fall instead once some new grass comes up?
If you are going to overseed then you'll need to avoid pre-emergent now. You could just get started this first part of the season and get comfortable with the current lawn and get your renovation stuff planned for fall
Ortho Weed B Gon with Crabgrass Control as 2,4-D, Dicamba, and Quinclorac. I used this on some crabgrass that had really matured and it really worked. You did not mention Quinclorac. Is that ingredient a good one in your opinion for the crabgrass?
He was discussing preemergents. What you mentioned are postemergents. I've had some luck with quinclorac if applied while crabgrass is young. Once matured I've had to do multiple applications. But use a preemergent, and avoid this all together.
Yes you will be fine by then. Just do one full application when soil temps hit 50 rather than the split application that Ryan discussed towards the end of the video. This will give it plenty of time to wear off before your fall seeding
@@bradneilly Does that apply to prodiamine at full rate? I know there's a pretty long residual on it. Wondering if I should go with dithiopyr or pendimethalin instead, but I already bought prodiamine WDG.

I will be updating a few things soon on that
Hey Ryan, my grass took a hit last year near the end...
You can still watch it closely and spray for crabgrass later before the plants get mature
your Dithiopyr link goes to a prodimine product page.
You could seed but then be prepared to spray for crabgrass early summer when it's just starting to come up
Ryan, why do you use the Scott's spreader when you have nicer ones? Do you have different spreaders for different products?
I just have the old Scotts and the newer Elite but some of the clips are from a couple seasons ago
Take a look at your 10 day and see what the trend is looking like. For me it's looking colder next week with rain
@@ryanknorrlawncare Great idea. Will do. Thanks so much for the reply.
Any chance you would want to share your thoughts about the soil testing companies?
This is the one I've been using ruclips.net/video/vjNwCwzgaKc/видео.html
@@ryanknorrlawncare Thanks for your thoughts
I just can't wait to MOW!
How long does Tenacity last? When do I need to reapply it?
when seeding it would be at the time of seeding and 4 weeks later
So there is no pre emergent for dandelions or clover?
I had same question so I did scotts weedex today but what do I do for dandelions
@9:21 damn!! too perfect
You should be fine as long as it was watered in
Hey Ryan, I completed a KBG renovation in my front yard last fall but did have some clover show up.
What about Tenacity?
That's a temporary solution for seeding
Cant wait to hit the lawn.. need the damn snow to melt!
Ryan, question for you. I am planning on doing a spring overseed beginning of April. I would like to use tenacity as a pre-emergent after I aerate and thatch. Is this a good time to use tenacity to help prevent new weed growth even though I am planning on seeding? I have heard varying opinions? Thank you
yes it can be used with seeding. It's not 100% effective from my experience but is your best bet in your situation
Should I wait and use a post emergent with triclopyr?
check out my video on creeping Charlie which is similar as far as control
Ryan, I already invested in a big bottle of Dythiopir. You said it lasts a bit less than Prodiamine. Would you advise applying Dythiopir twice; early spring and then again in July? I am in North NJ.
check out that split application article linked in the description
Is it possible to seed after a month or so of adding the pre emergent?
You might want to look into tenacity at the time of seeding. I think he’s mentioned it before, and I’m curious as to why he didn’t this time.
Didn't talk about that as a traditional pre-emergent because it confuses people that they think they can use it just like these other products and it's only a temporary solution for seeding.
How do I prevent Chinch weeds
Welcome back...
What do you do in an area like here in Phoenix, AZ where the soil temps never really get below 55?
I'm in mesa Az. I put mine down mid to late February last few years with good results
@@jrplorins6679 Sounds good. I put some down this past weekend. I hope the timing lines up.
Hi Ryan, what is your opinion of mesotrione?
Temporary solution for seeding but not a good solution for pre-emergent that will last into the summer like these products mentioned
Oh ya it’s time !!!!
Ryan, do you use or recommend a Soil PH Meter ?
I don't have any experience with those so far, sorry
What can I use to prevent over?😔
Could you do a video about treating moss? The struggle is real with that nonsense.
Next episode of the podcast has a segment on moss control
I need to do a full lawn level, overseed procedure to my lawn (New house, previously neglected). The current lawn has some patches of weed grass I’d like to get rid of. Should I avoid the pre emergent since I want to overseed and promote new grass growth? Just tackle that this fall instead once some new grass comes up?
If you are going to overseed then you'll need to avoid pre-emergent now. You could just get started this first part of the season and get comfortable with the current lawn and get your renovation stuff planned for fall
@@ryanknorrlawncare I read tenacity is ok when seeding. Do you think it’s worth spraying down some of that?
@@shakenbake11 you can certainly use that and it's better than nothing at all but is not 100% bulletproof either from my experience
Usually for post quinclorac works but if the plants are mature adding in some tenacity to the mix can help
Hi 👋🏻
I still have 2” of snow on my yard and a lot of dog poop!
I hear ya on the 2nd part
Thanks bud!
Anyone have any idea how to kill wheat grass/false oat grass? Or just keep mowing it and hope it dies out? Currently have a tall fescue lawn
Hmm I am not familiar with that one
If you're planning a fall renovation, should you still apply preM this spring?
Yes you will be fine by then. Just do one full application when soil temps hit 50 rather than the split application that Ryan discussed towards the end of the video. This will give it plenty of time to wear off before your fall seeding
@@bradneilly Does that apply to prodiamine at full rate? I know there's a pretty long residual on it. Wondering if I should go with dithiopyr or pendimethalin instead, but I already bought prodiamine WDG.
I used full rate prodiamine last spring and overseeded in the fall with SeedSuperStore SS1000 I believe and got good germination
