@@HumbleMechanic I found it, and another one, plus 2 10mm spanners. Now, to find that 13mm spanner, I know I had at least 5 of the darn things, but all I can find are 12mm sockets, and only some bolts fit.

I am not sure I mentioned it, but the oil residue is from the rubber boot being split and sloshing fluid out. I could have probably not resealed that housing. If those boots are split you can get a leak like this.
I noticed you forgot to mention the toothbrush you used for cleaning. DO NOT USE YOUR OWN TOOTHBRUSH!!!!!!! The wife's toothbrush is completely fine to use.😂😂😂😂😂

Currently have been watching your videos and doing work on my mk6 GTI! Just bought an NB2 miata earlier this month and I can't believe my favourite VW mechanic got one too! Can't wait to see what you do to it :)
Great video! One thing to add is that on 2001+ NBs there is an extra screw under the power window assembly. There are tabs on the front and back of the assembly so you need a credit card or something to pry it out gently. Then you can take that screw out and the console will come loose. Otherwise spot on!

After a quick scan, I only referenced back to your video whenever I needed another refresh. Noticed a few other videos skipped important steps/details that I would've overlooked/forgot about, due to lack of experience. This video made this job very easy for me (and possible haha).

If you put a clear hose on the end of a baster then you can do this stupid easy. Also getting a scuff bad from the kitchen and some vinegar really cleans these up quick and easy.
I cannot stress enough how tough those pins are to smack out, like I had a pretty heavy hammer and smashing a punch into it on the floor making dents in the concrete floor tough (exaggerated). Anyone doing this make sure you got tools that can really smack on those pins.
Love the channel been a big fan since the early days keep up the great work! I had a quick question I know this is off topic but I need help, if anyone here or you can point me in the right direction it would help me a lot. Heres whats going on, I have a 1991 jeep cherokee 4.0. 217,000 k miles on it, it was burning oil so I had no choice but open it up and see what is going inside. Took off the head saw bad burnt values so I started with the head took them all out cleanded them up and did value job with compound and that rubber tool to re seat them everything looked perfect after that seat was perfect also value steams where changed few months before this so they looked OK. After the head I saw the block walls where smooth with no cross patterns left, so I took all the pistons out rings where not stuck or brunt they moved freely, next I re hoaned the walls to make the crisscross pattern I removed all the rings and cleaned all pistons up everything was super clean and rings where moving like they where new I also replaced the piston bearings cause they showed sign of wear. Before I put everything back I did a simple test put one piston in and poured oil on top of it to see if oil would drop through the rings left it for 2 days no oil went through I did the same test before I did the hoan and clean up of piston rings and oil fell through within hours. So I thought this was a good sign. after hoaning and ring clean up I believed rings where tight and no blow by was going to happen. Then I put everything back in. the car stared perfect and I thought everything was great then I did compression test each read same reading 125.125.125.125.124 126. So I drove it about 100 miles and oil was below safe line, OKi though maybe the rings need time to set in new block walls but no 1000 miles later I'm burning even more oil then before almost a whole quart every 70 miles that's really really bad. My mistake I feel is because I didn't replace the piston rings ? But they looked totally fine and where moving with ease. Please what do you think I did wrong here? I don't want to give up on this jeep but this is crzy how much oil it's going through I'm willing to take it apart again trying to fix it, currently it has good power no blue smoke but the oil I just disappearing. Sorry this is so long but I'm so lost and any help would be greatly appreciated.

I didn't notice the orientation of the shifter. It went in both ways. My shift knob is 180 degrees out. I fixed the shifter knob lock screw and all is fine. I don't know that it really matters. Shifts the same as before.

I remember when you did the shifter bushings on the R32 (fantastic video btw), just out of curiosity, how much more difficult would it be to do a shifter bushing kit for a 20th anniversary Mk4 gli? Anything to watch out for specifically before diving in?
None of those screws are Phillips...they’re JIS cross-head screws. Using a Phillips will damage them. (I chewed up a LOT of screw heads before I learned that.) Late ‘80s Mazda B series trucks had the same nylon bushings in their stick shifts.
@@nickpappas4133 for a Japanese motorcycle, use the tool kit screwdriver for the screws. Do not use the tool kit spark plug socket for the front axle bolt, because it will likely bend it for spark plug use. A lot of people replace the x or flathead screw heads with allen head screws.
I was driving around a Toyota Echo with a shifter so messed up it essentially would kind of flop around as you drove, and the gear pattern was more your imagination then actual pattern. Put it in 1st? Think I'll just slide into the neutral position but just enough to still be 1st.

I would add a lot of Fluid Film spray on both sides of the rubber parts, so they do not crack from age as quickly. It is made from lanolin from sheepskin. Not for door gaskets- use silicone spray or Mothers VLR spray instead.
@@HumbleMechanic most rubber now is not the sap from a rubber tree like the old days- it is made from fossil oil and chemicals. I use Mothers VLR spray for interiors- made for vinyl, leather and rubber. Fluid Film spray is good for most rubber, leather and motorcycle chains- it does have a slight bad smell. The Mothers VLR spray smells good. I use Turtle Wax Trim Restorer for hard unpainted plastic inside and out. The Fluid Film spray might damage door gaskets. I prefer the Mothers VLR spray instead of silicone spray because it smells better, but the silicone spray works better for side window channels. Silicone spray will ruin oxygen sensors.
You can't improve the transmission wiggle with trans mounts, because there are no trans mounts. Miatas have two motor mounts and two differential mounts. The trans is solidly connected in between the two (with the PPF bridging the trans to the diff)
is there a reason to remoove the pin at 12:08 whilst the turret is in the car? seems like it would be easier to replace the seat whilst this bit is out of the vehicle.
@HumbleMechanic I test drove a 2001 Miata with a 6 speed and while driving, the shifter was able to move almost freely like it was in neutral. Is that bad bad or can doing the steps here fix it? I want to buy the car but this is one of the things I’m concerned about. Thanks!

There is a whole kit of the plastic parts for this, either aftermarket or from VW spares. Mostly easy to install, though you will benefit from a lot of rubber grease to help with the places where they go into the housings and where all the sliding parts go. My VW was sloppy, and the one plastic bush for the ball was out of stock, so replaced the rest, and then simply used a lot of cable ties and rubber grease to make the fit better.

If you’re going down that path, the majority seem to land on 180 out from intake valves/ injector. This is one of those things that the theory is sound, and there man be a SLIGHT benefit, but probably not worth the time or added cost. But I think the next cylinder head I have off I may do it just to do it
Surprised you didn't spring for using "Unicorn Tears" (Motorcraft XT-M5-QS), understandable though cause its so expensive. I'm probably going to use Redline MT-90 for mine when I do it soon.

It seems you’ve realized that lower bushing is metal from the factory and installing a plastic aftermarket one that comes in those kits is actually worse than the one it came with from the factory. So pulling that pin in the NB cars is unnecessary unless someone was harsh enough with the shifter to crack the metal bushing or the weavy washer. AFAIK,the NA cars had a plastic lower bushing and that’s why those kits come with it.
@@HumbleMechanic They are funny. Mine were completely rusted and I couldn't turn the screws to retract the piston. I got a used set from Roswell Wrecking that looked brand new with pads for $40!
@@Patrick94GSR yes, true.....none were metal from the factory, and the plastic fall apart often with nothing remaining.....i just did my '02 5-spd yesterday and it was a sloppy floppy loose shifting mess - a couple tiny chunks of that white plastic bushing was all that remained down in there after 90k miles. The new brass (or bronze?) one makes for sweet snicky shifts.

The design of a Japanese Phillips screw and North American is different.You need a Japanese screwdriver for a proper fit.Most motorcycle tech’s know this.A sae Phillips screwdriver will cam out on a tight screw.
Interestingly enough I was in the motorcycle industry for 45 years as a tech, service manager, and finally a technical coordinator for Yamahas International. That’s probably why this stood out so much to me in the first place.

That’s pretty low I think limit is 110. Before I did any mechanical repair I’d try some BG compression/Engine performance restore. If you got sleeves you’d need to have a machine shop do the work. I’d do more digging before I took the engine done

Hey @humble mechanic, I redid the shifter in my 99 transmission I'm wondering do you feel the shifter when pulled to the left to go into first and second moves less than when you go to the right for 5th? This car is new to me so not sure if this is normal if I got bad transmission or maybe did something wrong on the install.
@@HumbleMechanic sure did with a brass one as well. The movement is fine mostly concerned about the left to right difference. To the left it's a short move and to the right it's a longer move is yours the same way?
The only short shifter worth anything for a Miata is the Miata Roadster shifter which is about $350. It’s the only true short throw shifter that raises the ball and lengthens the lever arm below the ball. All other shifters on the market are just shortened height levers.
@@HumbleMechanic But i have not the Shifter with the PVC ball but with the kinematic.It's only adjustable with the 2 special tools VW 3422 and 3192/2 but I bought both last year and now I found the part numbers for the rolls and bushings.Fingers crossed that all this works. Haha the infamous broken NB1 console lid plastic hinge. What a ridiculous piss poor design. Nice DIY repair from the previous owner with the brass hinges. I used a piano hinge to make a pretty nice replacement. Just need to paint it black.
HumbleMechanic that’s the power plant frame unique to Miatas. They use it to keep the engine trans and diff all rigidly mounted as one unit, then put the rubber mounts at the engine and diff only. No need for trans mounts or any rubber on the drive shaft. And I can attest that the Mazda competition rubber mounts make a huge difference if your old ones are torn like mine were.
My takeaway from this is:

Could be piston rings. Is the oil burning? Meaning smoke from the exhaust?

@HumbleMechanic I test drove a 2001 Miata with a 6 speed and while driving, the shifter was able to move almost freely like it was in neutral. Is that bad bad or can doing the steps here fix it? I want to buy the car but this is one of the things I’m concerned about. Thanks!
Is the shifter the same for the NB 5-speed and 1999-2000 the same? If not, will it fit and work?

There is a whole kit of the plastic parts for this, either aftermarket or from VW spares. Mostly easy to install, though you will benefit from a lot of rubber grease to help with the places where they go into the housings and where all the sliding parts go.
My VW was sloppy, and the one plastic bush for the ball was out of stock, so replaced the rest, and then simply used a lot of cable ties and rubber grease to make the fit better.
Is the NA and NB the same shifter?

Well what I did was leave it on the floor, kick it over, spill it, then use an oil absorbent towel to clean it.

Where should the grounding electrode be clocked too?
If you’re going down that path, the majority seem to land on 180 out from intake valves/ injector.
This is one of those things that the theory is sound, and there man be a SLIGHT benefit, but probably not worth the time or added cost.
But I think the next cylinder head I have off I may do it just to do it

Surprised you didn't spring for using "Unicorn Tears" (Motorcraft XT-M5-QS), understandable though cause its so expensive. I'm probably going to use Redline MT-90 for mine when I do it soon.

I used Motorcraft fluid in my trans and Redline in the diff. RockAuto has the Motorcraft fluid for a decent price. Only 2 quarts needed.

It seems you’ve realized that lower bushing is metal from the factory and installing a plastic aftermarket one that comes in those kits is actually worse than the one it came with from the factory. So pulling that pin in the NB cars is unnecessary unless someone was harsh enough with the shifter to crack the metal bushing or the weavy washer. AFAIK,the NA cars had a plastic lower bushing and that’s why those kits come with it.

No, that’s incorrect. The plastic bushing was OEM on all 90-05 Miatas. The bronze aftermarket bushing is a worthy upgrade when rebuilding the shifter.
@@Patrick94GSR yes, true.....none were metal from the factory, and the plastic fall apart often with nothing remaining.....i just did my '02 5-spd yesterday and it was a sloppy floppy loose shifting mess - a couple tiny chunks of that white plastic bushing was all that remained down in there after 90k miles. The new brass (or bronze?) one makes for sweet snicky shifts.

A Phillips Head Screwdriver that actually fits the screw would be nice though...
The design of a Japanese Phillips screw and North American is different.You need a Japanese screwdriver for a proper fit.Most motorcycle tech’s know this.A sae Phillips screwdriver will cam out on a tight screw.
Interestingly enough I was in the motorcycle industry for 45 years as a tech, service manager, and finally a technical coordinator for Yamahas International. That’s probably why this stood out so much to me in the first place.

So my My compression on all 6 cylinders is between 125 and 126. Is that super low? Or just low? What should they be? What if I went and bought sleeves the for block, would I have to to get all new pistons? Definitely new pistons rings
That’s pretty low I think limit is 110. Before I did any mechanical repair I’d try some BG compression/Engine performance restore.
If you got sleeves you’d need to have a machine shop do the work. I’d do more digging before I took the engine done

I reason I think that the rings where not bad was able to pour oil after the Hon and put old rings and pourd oil on top to to see if it would seep thour and it didn't for 4 days....... So that made me think piston rings where OK I guess not a good test?
Not yet. I’d do a leak down test and find where the low compression is coming from
Hey @humble mechanic, I redid the shifter in my 99 transmission I'm wondering do you feel the shifter when pulled to the left to go into first and second moves less than when you go to the right for 5th? This car is new to me so not sure if this is normal if I got bad transmission or maybe did something wrong on the install.

@@HumbleMechanic sure did with a brass one as well. The movement is fine mostly concerned about the left to right difference. To the left it's a short move and to the right it's a longer move is yours the same way?
If any of the seat of bushing is worn it will pop out of gear.

Get a couple of rubber gaskets also! The wear out very easy.

The only short shifter worth anything for a Miata is the Miata Roadster shifter which is about $350. It’s the only true short throw shifter that raises the ball and lengthens the lever arm below the ball. All other shifters on the market are just shortened height levers.
Sadly my 1998 Golf Mk4 has the same issues

@@HumbleMechanic But i have not the Shifter with the PVC ball but with the kinematic.It's only adjustable with the 2 special tools VW 3422 and 3192/2 but I bought both last year and now I found the part numbers for the rolls and bushings.Fingers crossed that all this works.

Haha the infamous broken NB1 console lid plastic hinge. What a ridiculous piss poor design. Nice DIY repair from the previous owner with the brass hinges. I used a piano hinge to make a pretty nice replacement. Just need to paint it black.

Because I want to be sure there is nothing else wrong in the transmission. I didn’t want to add a non-stock variable If something is wrong
No transmission mounts on these, only engine and differential mounts, everything in between is metal
Ah good point. A strange truth I think. Ahah I have engine mounts ready to go.
HumbleMechanic that’s the power plant frame unique to Miatas. They use it to keep the engine trans and diff all rigidly mounted as one unit, then put the rubber mounts at the engine and diff only. No need for trans mounts or any rubber on the drive shaft. And I can attest that the Mazda competition rubber mounts make a huge difference if your old ones are torn like mine were.
