My nostalgic connection to spark plugs: fishing with my dad as a kid (where spark plugs were used as fishing line weights); and, learning how to change spark plugs in his 1992 Nissan Hardbody my freshman year of high school. Default question at checkout is whether or not I want to add anti-seize for a buck. I think if I tell someone at the auto parts store counter that a spark plug has a "trivalent coating" they'll look at me as if I had a third eye. I never knew that's what it was called, but now I have a real smart word to use. Great video and content!

Great video Charles! I'd like to add one thing for newbies like me who wants to change sparks + wires on a NA / NB Miata : PLUG THE WIRE UNTIL THE RUBBER BOOT FLUSH THE COVER VALVE ! There was a gap between the rubber boot and the cover .As a result, water and dirt from the road went inside the wells... Causing misfiring 300km after I changed it. 🙄
This brought back memories of my old 1990 Mazda 323 (Protege in US) and the spark plugs I replaced. Used NGK BKR5E plugs which the owners manual recommends (1,6-16valve SOHC, carb engine) and they had the V-shape center electrode.
My 2017 GTI is on the maintenance plan, and in the 40,000 mile service they replaced the spark plugs. One of the spark plugs were defective and caused the engine to misfire less than 500 miles after being installed. The check engine light came on, but they replaced all of them.
No, they told me they couldn’t figure out which cylinder it was that was misfiring so they just replaced all 4 plugs and it fixed the problem and cleared the engine light.

Many fools out there use anti seize on their spark plugs even when the spark plug manufacturers say to not use it. Pretty much all of the automotive channels on RUclips have made this error including Eric the car guy, Chrisfix and so many others.
I’m sure there are some proven applications where it would be a good idea. But i try to stick to the spark plug and vehicle manufacturers info. Especially when they are a 30k interval. Mucking up a well, potentially incorrect toque, possible weak grounding, are all things I don’t want to deal with.
Is because some idiots recommend it is almost screwd up an hyundai 2.4 l engine doing that it throws the torque out of range.and this people are so called Master mechanics.
I use magnetic sockets. I got tired of my rubber socket inserts coming out. Sadly snapon doesn't make a magnetic 12 point socket, so I have to hunt a few of those down elsewhere. "Total solutions provider" my butt.
Ah man. I actually think my magnetic socket just came. Hahah gluing the rubber back in is silly but it’s what I prefer. I think mine is just flat worn out. Ga
Oh no HumbleMechanic, you screwed up. You should never put dielectric grease on electrical terminals. Dielectric grease is an insulator and as such should should only be applied sparingly to the inside or the base of the spark plug boots. See this: ruclips.net/video/-542IYGBbpg/видео.html
They had all the right stuff for the Miata. I’ve been dealing with all levels of parts for a long time, online, dealer, wholesale, retail, used you name it. They all have the potential to make mistakes. It largely depends on communication
Any broad statements like that mean nothing. There are over 5200 stores with about 74,000 people working in them. Know what you drive and what you need. When I have asked people what kind of transmission they have manual or automatic I have asked "whats the difference".

What are you looking for? :) I sadly just donated mine
HumbleMechanic The reliability of them an what common failures of these motors are ,I just got an 1.8t awp just looking to learn more about them!
Ah. That is a great topic.
Still have my ATW with 310K.
👍👍
Ga
See my magnet keeps coming out of my spark plug socket. I went to Snap On and got a socket with just a regular rubber boot, and it’s been fantastic
You guys are always shouting out advance Auto, but I've never been able to get anything for my Audi from them. Not even oil
Not even oil? I’m surprised. Just one particular store or online too?
I work for Advance and sell stuff for Audi's all the time. Can you be more specific? Oil will probably be 5w-40 or 5w-30.

No sandals?
No. I had to hang them up. Plus it’s winter time.
2:10 lol
Repair manual? We ain't got no stink'n repair manual.
Make sure you don't need a thin wall socket. Ask me how I know. Do a search in advance.
Very good point
Balls, i've just spent £30 on iridium plugs aha
It’s okay if upgrade. It’s just more $. Hopefully more performance
@@HumbleMechanic I do believe we do not gap adjust these puppies??
I'm not admitting to this, butt, I have herd that some people use old spark plugs as weight for fishing.
I’ve heard that too. :) I’ve never done it
Warning, video contains spark plug abuse.
Heavy spark plug abuse
If you want the right parts dont buy from advanced auto parts
They had all the right stuff for the Miata. I’ve been dealing with all levels of parts for a long time, online, dealer, wholesale, retail, used you name it. They all have the potential to make mistakes. It largely depends on communication
Any broad statements like that mean nothing. There are over 5200 stores with about 74,000 people working in them. Know what you drive and what you need.
When I have asked people what kind of transmission they have manual or automatic I have asked "whats the difference".
