Regarding Milan Rastislav Štefánik's death, based on an Italian eyewitness, his plane wasn't shot down, though a rumor spread that the Czechoslovak Army shot it down because they thought the Italian plane was Hungarian (this is because he tried to land in Bratislava which was in a conflict area between the Hungarian Soviet Republic and Czechoslovakia). According to the eyewitness, on the first landing attempt at Bratislava, the wheels touched the landing path, after which the cooling water immediately started leaking which caused the overheating of the engines. And then on the second landing attempt, one of the engines exploded, resulting in the deaths of everyone on board. Regardless, he was an absolute legend for joining the French army so he could train to become an aviator, and organized Czechoslovak Legions as resistance to liberate their homeland from Austria-Hungary which led to the founding of the Czechoslovak National Council. Heck, a minor planet was discovered in 1982 by the Kleť Observatory in what's now Czechia and they chose to name it after him, 3571 Milanštefánik.
