I have played Hungary with Fascist King. It is the same as historical AI with Horthy, but you SIMP more for Germany (you elect as king some German Royal who was part of the SS) and join the Axis earlier.

I have unironically played all democratic paths in the game except I think Czechoslovakia and New Zealand (I also didn't do it on Lithuania and Latvia, but the paths are the same as the estonian one so it doesn't matter), and I think the democratic paths and democratic alt-history paths in this game would be a lot better if you simply had more access to wargoals. For example, getting wargoals against all non-democratic nearby countries, wargoals against nations you have cores or (historical) claims on or letting you justify as democracies against non-democratic nations even if they didn't create any world tension would help.
My favourite democratic trees allow expansion as one, like Japan, although it takes some cheese to take the phillipenes and Siam by justifying before switching over
What if they just added a more comprehensive political system in democracies, so that wartime policy is actually dictated by war performance. perhaps democratic nations will be called to a whitepeace if their support falls too low, so offensive wars are possible, but naturally discouraged by the game features.
Paradox should finally make an Italian focus tree, cuz at this point it's the meme that they made focuses for countries that didn't matter in WW2 and neglected Italy.

I would strongly recommend a mod called "hungary expanded". Its probably one of the biggest mods that focuses on a single nation and makes hungary a lot more interesting and playable.
I think a focus tree for Austria would be great, it doesn‘t have to be a big one but just having a few cool things to do for this nation would be very nice. At least give them also a alt historical focus tree to reform AuH. I‘d have so many ideas for an austria focus tree. And besides that there should be a branch when they basically do nothing until getting anschlussed.

Thats where mods shine like the Cold War mod, Kaiserreich, Great War or the Empire mod. But vanilla just gets boring because the normal ww2 setting just gets boring. Still, they should at least do everything they can to make the vanilla expirience good or at least f***ing complete.
One thing that should be added is custom uniform designer for your units like the tank designer, and research for better drip. Certain hats helmets and looks could give bonus support for certain ideologies and you could improve armor to have units more protected. In this world, it’s drip or drown, why not have in WW2 game?
They fixed this in R56 too, you should try this path with the mod, it adds portraits and fixes the country flag and doesn't call it a ''republic'' when its a consitutional monarchy.
Fun fact, Democratic Hungary is actually the first path I ever played on HoI4. I tried it when I bought the game and DoD, and died almost immediately when WW2 started, with almost nothing to show for it but some equipment from Sweden.
so, I actually unironically played democratic hungary in a mp game with 2 of my friends, basically they were co-oping as germany because one of them was learning how to play and I was playing hungary because muh austria-hungary, they decided to justify on austria for some reason and I was like "wait don't, I need muh austria-hungary" so they decided that I was going to be invaded next, considering that austria is going to be gone soon and I had no chance on taking germany alone in 1937, my only choice was to get some AI to bail me out, can't join the axis for obvious reasons, soviets are too far away to help(remember this is 1937 and poland is still around) so my only choice was to join the allies, so I built some forts behind the danube river and the plan was to hold the river until I finish the join the allies focus, and it worked! the danube was an absolute bloodshed for them, couldn't even push a single tile(forts+river op lmao) and soon enough I got in the allies, just in time for the french to join and absolutelly smoulder them, it was a glourious game!

What to be added to Hoi4: DLC cross-compatibility. Right now the PDX DLC upgrade policy, especially for Hoi4 is atrocious. Every friggin DLC keeps adding (mostly irrelevant) stuff to the game, without any attempt to update and optimize older content. Like when La Résistance dropped in the armored cars, every major nation got their own unique skins... So i bought Death or Dishonor and that mod had this feature, what gave skins and models for the small middle European countries. La Résistance dropped and no armored car skins for those, who bought the earlier DLC. No Csaba for Hungary (sad piano music). It would be a really nice touch, if they keep updating earlier DLC's when a new one arrives, but no. Give historical content and game mechanic for free. The infamous "Buy for the Blitz" command in Together for Victory. But as i just noticed, even the fuckin' minimap is behind a pay-wall. Fuck you, Paradox! Same i could tell about the focus tree's. Wanking the Tiger, Germany got a whole new alt-history tree on which it can assassinate Mussolini in Italy. If they do that, the whole german cooperation branch of the italian focus tree is gone, because they have to be fascist to do that. That's a good quarter of their content, so thx pdx. Same could be told about the death and dishonored nations. Imperial Germany can reform Austria-Hungary (Why would they do that, i don't know), but when they achieve that, it's totally random which middle european tag switched to be the Monarchy. If it's the czech, then you will have the Monarchy with a Czech focus tree, instead the already existing AH tree from Hungary. Quality. Maybe less meme and historical masturbation content. I already talked about "Germany can reform the Austro-Hungarian Empire on their Kaiser path"... It's garbage. Why would they ever want to do that? Hungary's focus tree needs a lot of work. The democratic path especially. But I'd also love more flavor for the Hapsburg path, maybe a choice to stay Austria-Hungary, or just the Austrian Empire, or choose to federalize as the United States of Greater Austria or the Danubian Federation. Each path having their own different buffs and stuff. Also I'd love if Otto got to have a uniform like all the other monarchs. And also get listed as Otto I or something since every other monarch is listed that way.

I'm a little biased because it's my favorite tree to play but the coring mechanics introduced in La Resistance with Anarchist Spain could really do with being expanded on and reworked so they're less equipment/manpower hungry, while also making it available for more countries. whether the trees that receive the mechanic are also anarchist or communist or not, I don't really care, like I think the mechanic would work pretty well for some democratic countries (imagine being able to core regions by making them official states and/or territories as the US or one of the UKs dominions, for instance). idk just always seemed like that mechanic was kind of half-baked and under utilized, like it's just a tantalizing taste of what *could* be a really cool mechanic carried over from over PDX games but with a distinctly HOI flavor.
The vanilla Hungarian focus tree is Italy-tier shit IMHO, it just gets overlooked because it's not a major nation. Hungarian Flavor mod fixes the problem, consider giving it a try.
I would second that. That mod is HUGE. 4 communist paths, 3 democratic paths(including revisionist democratic hungary) 2 brown ideology paths and 3 ways to go on with non-aligned.
Hey, I played this path once! I remember spamming the button to request help from Sweden once I got into a war with... Someone. I can't remember. It's kinda hard to remember stuff that's as boring as that, you know.
Outside of the obvious (italy, air, diplomacy and peacedeals...) and the unthinkable (POWs, war crimes, genocide...) i think elements such as food supplies (kinda similar to fuel) and army/troops moral would be intresting mechanics.
Thank you for the mod information you provided. I played Hungary in a game where all countries were set as democratic routes, and then I was surprised to find that Paradox didn’t add a separate leader portrait for democratic Hungary. This company is too Lazy, didn't give enough options for each route, resulting in boring democratic routes in most countries
What must be added: Zapadoslavia and Iberia formable nation, South American Union formable nation, Middle Eastern and South American Focus Trees, make nukes be able to wipe out enemy divisions instead of just attritioning them, give the USSR the ability to form ASSRs and Military Okrugs (basically Soviet Reichkomissariats), buff Bolivia.
I think they should give Vichy France advisors back as currently they are without any, especially if they have an achievement tied to playing as Nationalist, or Vichy France, and it's also sorta fun purposely loosing as France, and then seeking revenge as Vichy with the Latin Entente

I think local autonomy along with their high command bonuses (like +25% army xp and -50% army advisor cost, or +2 starting levels on new generals) makes Democratic the secret best ideology in the game now on average, and I really wish pdx would lean more into that in focus trees and gameplay mechanics/decisions. like, Democratic Czechoslovakia gets some great buffs and one of the only 14 day focuses in vanilla, Democratic Netherlands can easily form the United BeNeLux by 37, along with it's EU being capable of blocking Sudetenland against AI, Democratic Mexico gets a bunch of leader choices, can do either atheist or Catholic state more easily, and still can expand south, Democratic estonia can get ~-50% training time , like 8% Recruitable pop, and about 20% factory output from the Baltic union...Democratic paths actually have a lot of cool potential so it would be great to see them fleshed out more
Democratic Netherlands and Czechoslovakia are personal favorites of mine, but Democratic baltics are real fun with the NSB trees. Democratic Japan is surprisingly good, and ahistorical Democratic UK gets pretty funky too with all their puppeting wargoals
It would be cool if the decisions about Operation Valkyrie are extended or that there is even a focus for that and for forming a new gouvernment afterwards, making peace with the (western) allies etc. Of course new portraits and political advisers should be added as well, including making the Kaiserreich-path ones available for this focus.
As much as it's memed there should be a serious Italian focus tree added to Hearts of Iron 4. Of course there's your typical stuff about forming the Roman empire or oppose Mussolini with the King or PCI. However I think there's a lot of fun potential outside of that framework though. For example, seeing a more mentally stable Italo Balbo path might be interesting, but also having futurists possibly able to take power over the fascist regime could allow for an interesting path that's rather unique to Italy. On top of that, there could definitely be a conflict with the PCI between Togliatti's stalinists and Bordiga's left-communists. And on top of that, seeing a democratic path with or without a king, and maybe even a king Umberto path.
I think Paradox should revork Italian and Czechoslovak focus tree, and probably add SNP and Prague uprising event, just like they added polish underground state.
Everyone try Hungarian Flavor mod. It basically makes Hungary the country with the most and best flavour, while it is not making the country op (it has both realistic and easy mode)

Try democratic greece, you end up beating up turkey and getting involved in a massive land war with italy and bulgaria, would recommend!

Wanking the Tiger, Germany got a whole new alt-history tree on which it can assassinate Mussolini in Italy. If they do that, the whole german cooperation branch of the italian focus tree is gone, because they have to be fascist to do that. That's a good quarter of their content, so thx pdx. Same could be told about the death and dishonored nations. Imperial Germany can reform Austria-Hungary (Why would they do that, i don't know), but when they achieve that, it's totally random which middle european tag switched to be the Monarchy. If it's the czech, then you will have the Monarchy with a Czech focus tree, instead the already existing AH tree from Hungary. Quality.

Hungary's focus tree needs a lot of work. The democratic path especially. But I'd also love more flavor for the Hapsburg path, maybe a choice to stay Austria-Hungary, or just the Austrian Empire, or choose to federalize as the United States of Greater Austria or the Danubian Federation. Each path having their own different buffs and stuff. Also I'd love if Otto got to have a uniform like all the other monarchs. And also get listed as Otto I or something since every other monarch is listed that way.

I'm a little biased because it's my favorite tree to play but the coring mechanics introduced in La Resistance with Anarchist Spain could really do with being expanded on and reworked so they're less equipment/manpower hungry, while also making it available for more countries. whether the trees that receive the mechanic are also anarchist or communist or not, I don't really care, like I think the mechanic would work pretty well for some democratic countries (imagine being able to core regions by making them official states and/or territories as the US or one of the UKs dominions, for instance). idk just always seemed like that mechanic was kind of half-baked and under utilized, like it's just a tantalizing taste of what *could* be a really cool mechanic carried over from over PDX games but with a distinctly HOI flavor.
That 0.5 second of the every-province mega radar was pretty funny
The vanilla Hungarian focus tree is Italy-tier shit IMHO, it just gets overlooked because it's not a major nation. Hungarian Flavor mod fixes the problem, consider giving it a try.

Outside of the obvious (italy, air, diplomacy and peacedeals...) and the unthinkable (POWs, war crimes, genocide...) i think elements such as food supplies (kinda similar to fuel) and army/troops moral would be intresting mechanics.

I played Hungary in a game where all countries were set as democratic routes, and then I was surprised to find that Paradox didn’t add a separate leader portrait for democratic Hungary. This company is too Lazy, didn't give enough options for each route, resulting in boring democratic routes in most countries

I think local autonomy along with their high command bonuses (like +25% army xp and -50% army advisor cost, or +2 starting levels on new generals) makes Democratic the secret best ideology in the game now on average, and I really wish pdx would lean more into that in focus trees and gameplay mechanics/decisions. like, Democratic Czechoslovakia gets some great buffs and one of the only 14 day focuses in vanilla, Democratic Netherlands can easily form the United BeNeLux by 37, along with it's EU being capable of blocking Sudetenland against AI, Democratic Mexico gets a bunch of leader choices, can do either atheist or Catholic state more easily, and still can expand south, Democratic estonia can get ~-50% training time , like 8% Recruitable pop, and about 20% factory output from the Baltic union...Democratic paths actually have a lot of cool potential so it would be great to see them fleshed out more
Democratic Netherlands and Czechoslovakia are personal favorites of mine, but Democratic baltics are real fun with the NSB trees. Democratic Japan is surprisingly good, and ahistorical Democratic UK gets pretty funky too with all their puppeting wargoals

As much as it's memed there should be a serious Italian focus tree added to Hearts of Iron 4. Of course there's your typical stuff about forming the Roman empire or oppose Mussolini with the King or PCI. However I think there's a lot of fun potential outside of that framework though. For example, seeing a more mentally stable Italo Balbo path might be interesting, but also having futurists possibly able to take power over the fascist regime could allow for an interesting path that's rather unique to Italy. On top of that, there could definitely be a conflict with the PCI between Togliatti's stalinists and Bordiga's left-communists. And on top of that, seeing a democratic path with or without a king, and maybe even a king Umberto path.
