34 seconds into this scene you hear the distinctive fingerpicking style of 18 year old Jackson Browne and the singing by Nico, Andy Warhol's protege. Jackson wrote the song at age 16. At 18 in nyc he became Nico's lover and that led to him ( ? ) to being on an album called " Chelsea Girl ". with The Velvet Underground sponsored by Andy Warhol. 3 of his original songs were used on the album. Wow! What more could a young boy do?

this film. this scene. this was where i fell in love with the royal tenenbaums and this song.
whenever i watch this scene, it’s almost through the perspective of richie and i can see him falling in love with her all over again. all those emotions come pouring out and he hates her and loves her and i feel the utter anguish he’s going through. especially paired with these days, yeah why doesn’t wes just rip my heart out and set it on fire.
this and that one scene with emma thompson in love actually are my favourite pieces of cinema. nothing competes, it’s just beautiful to watch and i’m so glad i came across this masterpiece.

I remember the beauty of this scene hitting me like a ton of bricks.

Still one of my favorite Wes Anderson shot scenes. What I love most is the few seconds of silence before "These Days" starts up like you're feeling Richie just stunned by the appearance of Margot before his brain has to think again.
This scene makes me miss early Wes Anderson direction. Nowadays his films feel a bit too fantastical and forced.

I love analyzing this scene by the mere visual composition itself. Often times, I'll pause frame by frame and search for compositions that are incredible illustrations. From the pan of the 2 characters intro to take a pic with the ship in the background to the movement of multilplicity ( sea captains) walking in file with the suitcases lined in a row that tell a story of the return home. So much to "unpack."
