Why do many Hindus wear a dot near the middle of their forehead?
The mark is known as a "bindi".
The term “bindi” stems from the Sanskrit word bindu, which means drop or particle.
Also called kumkum, sindoor, teep, tikli and bottu.
It’s common to see women wearing a small dot on their foreheads between their eyebrows.
The bindi is traditionally worn by women for religious purposes or to indicate that they're married.
But today the bindi has also become popular among women of all ages, as a beauty mark. And it comes in all colours, shapes and sizes.
Indeed, many Hollywood celebrities have begun wearing the bindi as a fashion statement.
What’s the history behind the bindi?
The holy scriptures called the Vedas were written around 5,000 years ago, in which they described the existence of areas of concentrated energy called the chakras.
There are seven main chakras that run along the centre of the body, and the sixth one called “third eye chakra” occurs exactly where the bindi is placed.
Thus, the bindi’s purpose is to enhance the powers of this chakra.
The two physical eyes are used for seeing the external world, while the third focuses inward toward God.
As such, the red dot is constant reminder to keep God at the centre of one’s thoughts.
When one does yoga, one has to concentrate on this third eye in order to awaken the inner self.
Red-coloured bindis, also serves as an auspicious sign of marriage.
As the Hindu bride steps over the threshold of her husband’s home, her red bindi is believed to usher in prosperity in her new home.
As such, when a woman is widowed, she no longer wears a red bindi due to its association with marriage.
Red powder Tika is always put on the forehead of people visiting temples or during religious ceremonies, as a blessing.
In addition to the simple dot, there are many types of forehead marks, known as tilaka in Sanskrit. Even men wear tikka, made with white clay on their forehead.
Each mark represents a particular sect or denomination of our vast religion.

I have a question, what makes a bindi a bindi? Like the position of it. If it's to high up like at the forehead is it not a bindi anymore? And if it's a jem instead of a red circle is it not a bindi or is it still a bindi? And if the jem is oval and not circular is it not a bindi?

Bindis are more of a sort of fashion in India that women wear. It is usually positioned slightly above the two eyebrows. And I have seen everything from painted bindis, colorful ones and designer ones with complex designs.

well the gem is still a bindi. U can say it's inspired from rajasthani & gurajrati (different communities in India) traditions since in their culture they wear oval & different shapes of bindis.

Ah, so this is what a Bindi is, its a red dot painted on the forehead between the eyes and not only for the ladies, but also for men. I was on Chef AJ's livestream this morning and somebody in the chat asked if her guest had bindis, now I know what a bindi is. I had originally thought it was a red rubi encrusted on the lady's forehead, this from the movie starring Spencer Tracy and Robert Wagner, 2 Swiss mountain climbers who stumble across a crashed airplane and aboard they discover a Hindu lady, alive yet hurt and the younger brother(Robert Wagner) instantly wanted to pry out the rubi but the older brother protected the lady and took her down the slope to the town hospital.

Tikka, bindi, etc are all different ways of decorating your forehead according to the different gods you resonate with. For eg, Vaishnavites draw a V. Some women draw bindi some draw flowers etc, shaivites draw three lines or one . Brahmins have their own tikka. It varies according to the sect you follow.
