I recently changed the spark plugs and spark plug wires in a 2000 Beetle 2.0L (AEG) thanks in part to this video. Where he had trouble in removing his 2nd plug (cylinder #3), I had a similar issue with cylinder #2 (2nd from left FACING engine). My advice, if faced with a stuck plug, is to STAY CALM, spray some penetrant around the stuck plug area, and move to the next one. By the time you get the next plug in, the stuck one should be ready to be removed; if not, be patient and use a little more force each time until it loosens. And, I can confirm, you WILL need that cable removal tool!
Thank you so much you just saved me a good chunk of money from the dealership. I have 2015 Vw jetta. I couldn't find the wire puller so manually do it myself. Big difference in my car. Turnt out great thanks again!
Thanks for uploading this. I have just done the plugs and leads on my wife's 2.0 Golf and having tbat lead puller was very useful/essential. I also bought the 10mm spark plug remover that looked just the same as yours but as hard as I tried, I could not get enough angle onto the 2nd plug (from the left side) and needed to borrow a much thinner socket set to get to that plug. What a stupid design to put the manifold in the way! It's a terrible engine the 2.0 and the hassle of changing the plugs has not endeared me to it any more either!
+Garage Legacy There is a problem I am having. My car while driving in rainy weather. The RPM meter drop too much. And when I Baldaft on the gas pedal there is no response. I feel as if the engine runs only on one cylinder. But when the water dry out from underneath the vehicle. Everything goes back to normal. What could be the problem?

I ordered the suggested tools and the job was a breeze! The only thing I had to look up was the gap of the spark plugs. Maybe you could mention that somewhere? thanks so much! Vrrooommmm!
Do i really NEED that other tool? The 16” i get it but is it that complicated so i cant change em without that tool? My beetle give abit of ”jerk” when idle,every 10 seconds or so. Goes fine while driving. Changed the engine oil,charged battery,changed fuel filter. So i think it could be a misfire with the plugs.
Hi there, Just curious, when is it necessary to replace to wires when changing the spark plugs? I have an 01 VW Beetle 2.0 GLS manual and I absolutely love her! I recently had an much needed oil 🛢 change and next thing I know, she all of a sudden was experiencing a misfire! The check engine light was flashing!😒 Anyways, my regular mechanic confirmed that it's a misfire and suggested that I get the spark plugs but not the wire set. I believe my regular mechanic mentioned an ignition coil as the second possibility. I'll be going back tomorrow to have the tune up done. @@MrsTiffanyMartinez Change the wires. They last about as long as the plugs and it's almost as much work to change them as the plugs so while you're in there change them.
VW Cabrio 2.0 is a shit design for the DIYers....I bought two before I found out what a PITA it is to service. I'm just used to 8 cylinders with roomy compartments I guess.
Yeah, sounds like it. I have an 00 Cabrio 2.0 (convertible) and she has no secrets from me. IMO, the VWs I've owned and the Nissan Sentra were the simplest design and you can fix any issues yourself. When i get a truck again, I'll probably talk to you more about it and get some advice from ya
10 min ???? the idiots at VW have put my Beetle spark plugs behind the manifold.......it took me 60 mins to do the 1st, 2nd and 4th ad gave up on the 3rd...plug (counting from left )...worst car I've ever worked on.....to make it worse still...the star bolts holding the metal cover have been rounded and now i cant get to sump plug....VW engineers need to apologise to home mechanics

using a Ratchet with a extension and a spark plug socket is a lot easier. also change plug wires. they are notorious for going bad.
