It's shaving a couple of million off of the top end talent to make sure the players lower down your line up, or in key positions like goaltending, is also competitive. The -25 point difference between Tkachuk & Marner isn't significant enough to really hinder Toronto in the standings either figuring Toronto finished with a +40 goal differential.
If Bob Ogden was a first pair defenseman making 10 mil, we'd be salty about the cap hit, but we might have gone deeper in the playoffs/actually competed for the cup.

Those kinds of players give you the pushback and depth scoring the Leafs desperately need in the playoffs. It's such a no brainer to move on from Marner given the cap constraints - and I say all this as a Marner fan.

Marner at 12m isn't 3 players at 4m, it's 2 players at 6m. That's Pesce and Matt Roy. That's one of the best D-corps in the NHL, if not the best.
