Thanks for playing! I do hope you got _some_ enjoyment out of this dated experience. Hopefully it should make a bit more sense where decision to revamp the game from the ground up came from. Although... considering how so-so the reception for the decision to use only FM-styled compositions was, I wonder if they'll listen?
Was there an explanation for why this released? It kinda just appeared outta left-field, and we never got a story for why it was just suddenly released. Did Joseph Waters approve of it? Was this just the last development build before everything on XG went silent??
It got leaked, it was supposed to be released later, in a more completed state but _someone_ got nosey, got a hold of a build (among other more or less unrelated ones), uploaded it onto webarchive and then proceeded to post the link to it on 4chan where it would proceed to spread like wildfire. As for the other questions, Joesph did have a part in New!XG's development before he went radio silent all of a sudden, leaving Euan to basically take his place. To be honest, considering that XG was originally Euan's project I feel like this is still able to be considered a good thing. Additionally, I can't blame Joesph for silently leaving... for all intents and purposes he had been known as "the Sonic XG guy" for many, _many_ years prior, so with the advent of New!XG and XG:Classic, he had an out and he took it; he's free now. As for whether or not this was the final build before things went radio-silent... _kind of._ That would have to be the New Menu / Time Attack build that was worked on around 2017, images of which he posted to the Sonic Retro forums. The only build of that which I have access to has an incomplete version of Final Fall act 1; it was _less complete than the 2007 demo._ In reality, this build was basically me unofficially building off of the last saved pre-widescreen MFA (basically the Clickteam equivalent to source code, for those unaware) dated 2016 (not 2017, as some might mistakenly believe). It was mostly complete, so for all intents and purposes I had plenty to work with, especially with the Sonic spritework "cache" that I had done for "XG Sonic in S3AIR" with the help of someone else prior to starting the project back sometime during late 2020. However, the unmodified version of said MFA could more specifically be considered the final, _most complete_ development build before said development went radio-silent, but not the final one _in general._ Despite it getting leaked, this actually helped me catch and address a few oversights I previously either didn't know about or didn't consider, so if anything this "global playtest" has really helped me out!
@@Raiz136 I see, always felt confused hearing about XG Classic so casually, as if one of the most beloved ""cancelled"" Sonic fangames in history _hadn't_ just been completed and released out of nowhere. Still wanna ask though, where did you get the MFA for everything? Considering XG's rep, I thought most people would know it was in someone else's hands now. Very curious on the history of how XG Classic came to start.
It quite literally came to be as a result of me starting a now defunct discord server centered around Sonic XG research, which over the process of the process of the week of November 22nd, 2020 (the 22nd through to the 28th specifically). The long and short of it? Some mad lad actually managed to get ahold of Joesph and suggested he create a Discord account and join the server, where he answered some burning questions about XG that were just begging to be answered. This was how the bizarre "Metal Sonic gives Tails a first-hand chance to experience what inevitably happens to players when they play Misty Maze act 4 without debug mode in Sonic Megamix" plot point was revealed to us, alongside the final boss of XG being actually Metal Sonic, not Eggman... at least prior to the Super Sonic sequence that followed. While I don't particularly like that plot point, it's all I really have in terms of a proper "ending" to XG as far as XG:Classic is concerned, so I'll take what I can get, even if begrudgingly. In retrospect, it was surprising how easily he just... _shared_ the MFAs with us. The at the time unreleased 2014 demo we had beforehand, but he just dropped the bombshell that was the 2016 MFA and we were just floored. It needed a _a lot_ of work, but I put in the time to at the least fix the more glaring issues like the "god mode" bug, where beating a stage or generally finding a way to restart a frame while Super would cause the invulnerability to remain in effect while the player character was in their base state, alongside the more bizarre oversights like Super States somehow jumping _lower_ than their respective base states while underwater and certain stage hazards lacking hurt detection, among many other things. Anyways, in terms of other things that we found out... it turns out that as of November 2020, Joesph had barely had the time to work on XG. Additionally, if I remember correctly, Joesph had made prior attempts to get XG's development back into gear proper which fizzled out, though I can't be certain if that is what he said, just that something along those lines was revealed. He basically was on his own, since at the time he and Euan had fallen out of contact (although this would later change).
@@Raiz136 Holy shit, can't believe after so long I finally understand the full story behind everything. Joseph really was generous to actually present you guys with the source code for XG itself; can't believe just how simple the interaction truly was. Amazing stuff, and for real, thank you for taking the time to answer all these nagging questions I've had about XG. They've been brewing for a long time lmao I wish you luck on your future endeavors and beyond -and nice reference to debugless Misty Maze act 4 lmao 😭😭-
I'm actually mindblown to see that this game is actually as old as it is. This game could get away with the way it's develop today, but only as a base. With a couple of overhauls, this game can shape itself to be something better and modern at the same time. Great 2 hour longplay Jaypin
The fact that this was *supposed* to be finished 5 years ago and yet only now has these old builds showing what it would’ve looked like if it was actually completed 5 years ago only makes my belief that this game had/still has a troubled development history even stronger
Wait wait, so this is the original version while the newer version is still being made?! I…I’m so happy I can finally play this version, it’s a dream come true. :)
I was still in school when the first demo came out! I remember being super excited for the game for a very long time. It's surreal to see the whole thing after all this time!
I have been waiting for this game ever since I stumbled upon a YT video of it when I was browsing RUclips in its early years. It wasn’t as exciting as I thought it would be, but then again this was made in the 2000’s during the rising amount of Sonic fangames and I have no complaints about it at all. More power to those who enjoy(ed) it!
At first I thought this game was kinda terrible when I 1st played it last night, but the more I played and better my skills got .. it was actually quite fun! I like it 👍🔥
Excuse me but... WHAT THE FACK!? THIS GAME JUST RELEASED??? i've been dreaming about playing this game ever since its first demo came out years ago. After some time i accepted that it would never release, and now... here we are.
"Another thing worth noting is that I MIGHT attempt playthroughs with both Tails & Knuckles separately to see if there's any differences." Well, I'm not part of the dev team, but I do know there are some differences for a Knuckles playthrough. Mind you, I'm not sure if there is enough for an entire video, but... Knuckles has a different intro, some unique routes, and extra boss fights involving a certain Fanged Sniper. His version of the initial Furious Finale Act 2 (the one before the revisit to Cosmic Chasm) also has a different theme than Sonic's. Tails on the other hand has relatively few differences for his playthrough, but he does miss out on Furious Finale Act 2 entirely for... reasons. Hope this answers your questions!
Sorry, this is awful. Most levels are boring, and some of them are an absolute mess (that time warp level, cool concept but shambolically put together). Bad Enemy placements mean that you’re basically running into hazards that are unavoidable unless you take the level really slowly (which defeats the purpose of a sonic game) Id recommend playing Sonic Triple Trouble instead.
Honestly same the ideas in some of these zones are really cool, like Cosmic Chasm, but they’re very undercooked. And some of the zones are bizarre, why is Cosmic Chasm placed between Palm Paradiso and Hydro Haven? With NO transition between them? The boss idea for the zone would’ve worked better for a penultimate zone, given that it’s in space. And Palm Paradiso is also odd. At first I thought Paradiso was a misspelling but it quite literally means Heaven, yet that idea is never fleshed out to the point that it might as well be a typo. All in all I hope the game gets updated so it can be the best it can be. Because I fear the game peaks at Final Fall.
