Koishi's theme. ...The imaginary friend whose presence will never be remembered for long. And yet we remember her every year on this special day! She's such an amazing character.
As if the interpretable backstory needed to get any more tragic after her sister Satori... Koishi had the ability to read people's thoughts, but this caused her to be feared and hated by anyone she got close to. She chose to forcefully close her mind, sealing away her own consciousness and sense of existence from everyone, including herself. The empty girl can never again be hated, but also never be loved. The harsh disconnect explored in the lyrics can apply to love of others or to self-love. Which is worse: to be someone whom no one knows, or someone who doesn’t know herself?

Fun fact, Koishi's color palette is Satori's but inverted. So if you invert the two, Satori becomes Koishi and Koishi becomes Satori!!
Another fun fact: Satori and Koishi are likely inspired by the painting "The Two Fridas," by Frida Kahlo. According to Frida Kahlo herself, the image originated from her memory of an imaginary childhood friend. Later she also admitted that the painting expressed her desperation and loneliness with the separation from her husband, Diego Rivera.

@@jakcesleepingrn5739 But it would've rhymed with "eyes." Lyrics generally like to set up the expectations by making them rhyme. Although I didn't thought of eyes, I was genuinely caught off guard by the word "face" because it didn't rhyme, which is genius.
I honestly hated that lyric choice, but smart.
I love Koishi, she's the only fictional character I think of that explores how terrifying it is to have no identity, presence or consciousness

Koishi's name pretty much means "little pebble on the side of the road" because she's quite forgettable.
Clever.
Eeeh, kinda. "Koishi" means "little rock" or "pebble," nothing about any roads in her name... However, in Symposium of Post-mysticism, Akyuu compares her to a pebble on the side of the road because even if you do see her, it's almost impossible to actually _notice_ her, let alone remember her.
That's one of the two meanings, the other one has something to do with love; that's the reason it's "Closed Eyes of Love". And that's the one used in Chinese, instead of the "pebble" one.

I feel like these lyrics really drive home the point I never heard from anyone until now: Koishi's power could very well be a curse, leaving her forever unable to maintain a true relationship with someone, because they'll always forget her the moment they look away.

People seem to be forgetting that Koishi literally doesn't have a conscious mind. Her actions are controlled entirely by "the unconscious", which is also why Satori can't read her mind: She doesn't have a mind for her to read. Yeah, Koishi can talk and fight like any normal Yokai would, but she can't really *think* or *feel* like one. I don't think she even knows what her power does, because knowledge requires consciousness - Even when she explains this to other people, she does it unconsciously. Is the desire to have a lasting relationship not also something that requires the aspect of the mind that Koishi lacks?
Humans are the only known race to have an « ego » that allows theme for reflexion and thoughts, but even babies, which debatably don’t have a consciousness higher than natural instinct, will cry for people to come to them, not necessarily because they need help, but because no being cannot be social.
I'm pretty sure babies have enough of a consciousness to feel emotions and want things.

Watching this again now, the lines "Sooner or later was anyone's guess" and "You look in my eyes, yet you're looking too far" leads me to believe since they grew up, they stopped noticing her and only had a vague feeling that "something" is there, which might explain the fear.

Unyu Okuu is smart she's just arrogant.
Really like how there is something resembling a story here, or even character development. It starts with the silly and childish greetings, with some degree of something off hidden. A bit later, and we see Koishi's facade breaking slightly: "No I mean, stay..." When we get to 1:15, it feels like a climax. Koishi completely drops her childish attitude and reveals herself fully to her "friend", like in an outburst of emotion. And then the climax, when both of them ended up forgetting eachother. Bravo.

I feel like the concept of Koishi is something that children would see as an imaginary friend (which is actually kinda cannon? She's the invisible friend to many young human children because their consciousness hasn't fully developed) and then as you grow older and become an adult she represents something that's inevitable and terrifying, and that is that we're all going to be forgotten eventually, just like Koishi. But Koishi can't necessarily be forgotten because of Satori and the immortals that know she exists.
It just occurred to me that her favourite song being the same as the one she’s singing too is because she’s forgotten all the others.

Usually I like to pick out a line of lyrics to analyse in a song, but this cover of Hartmann's Youkai Girl is so dense with symbolism or narrative that it's really hard to do. No wonder that this is Lyrica Live's top cover in views as of writing.
I have managed to pick out a line that really resonates with me though:

"And believing you believe in me is making me believe that
maybe I'm a thing that doesn't have to fade away".
I can't stop thinking about this line. Initially, it sounds like it's just a clever play on words, repeating the word "believe" in different contexts. The more I think about it, though, the more this line really captures the conflicted mood of Koishi in this moment. For most of the song and story, Koishi is blissfully playful, to the point that it's eerie, and her lyrics are filled with double entendres that are uncomfortable to think about for us who know about her background, but easy to miss for whichever new friend she happened to meet at the time.
But during the down part, where she seems to let out her vulnerable side, we hear of Koishi's insecurities (Ironic, considering that her insecurities stem from her literally closing herself off from the world). No matter how enjoyable her times with whomever she's with will be, she is someone that will be forgotten, and someone who forgets. A two-way amnesia, that makes it as though the encounter never happened. It's a hopeless situation, and Koishi knows as well as we do that there is no point in thinking that anything will change this fate.
But then she begins to feel hope. And this is when this line strikes home.
"Believing you believe in me" - this means that she has no proof that the other person believes in her. She just somehow convinced herself that it's so. *That's* how fragile the hope is, so much that she isn't even able to tell if the other person genuinely feels the same connection that she does.
"is making me believe" - and this results in her starting to think that maybe this time is special. Even though we all know that people forget Koishi as soon as she's out of sight, the hope begins to build. Childish optimism begins to take hold, and we begin to think: Maybe, just maybe this time is different.
"maybe I'm a thing that doesn't have to fade away" - she sings, even as she begins to fade away. Again, ultimate irony. At the moment when the song is at it's most heartfelt, and has finally built up a modicum of optimism, it's already stomping out that hope even as Koishi continues down that line of wishful thinking.
And then we loop back to the regular playful melody, and we hear how whomever she was playing with doesn't recognise her, and soon she forgets them too. Which creates the question: How many times does Koishi go through this cycle? Make a friend, feel sad that they'll forget each other, believe that they won't forget, then forget anyway. Each time, she will be brought the false hope that this time is different, and she only believes this because she doesn't remember all the other times she thought the same thing.
If it was hopeless all throughout, perhaps it wouldn't be as bad. But there is hope, and genuine faith that the power of friendship will prevail. Yet it doesn't. It never does. And we know it never will.
What a wonderful analysis!! Thank you so much for thinking so closely about it. This is very much a lot of what I intended to invoke, and phrased so eloquently!
Hearing it read back so explicitly, actually, makes me so sad that I'm inclined to acknowledge that this song is overdramatizing things a bit... by juxtaposing the situation of her current consciousless self with "the thoughts that she would have if she were still able to think." Which is inherently a contradiction, isn't it? In reality, she may not even be able to process "the worry that she will forget again," so it wouldn't result in any meaningful false hope. You can say she literally only experiences the positive feelings of hope before returning to the alternate positive feelings of a new friendship. Koishi is quite a happy character in canon Touhou, who truly does just enjoy the moment while she lasts. The situation is theoretically sad, when considering the things she theoretically gave up, but I don't think it actively causes her to suffer.
On the other hand, there IS one canon line that says "for the first time, she regretted closing her third eye" -- so perhaps it is possible to say she can experience anxiety about it. I don't know. I really specifically like the two-sided interpretability of Koishi's character. You could portray her as purely carefree, or you could focus on the lingering effects of the tragic side.
More to the point, maybe the more positive tone in canon Touhou comes from the fact that there are, in fact, ways for people to remember her. By associating her with other things, rather than just "her existence," which is too unstable in and of itself. Like her involvement in the incident of Hopeless Masquerade, I believe, solidified her presence a bit.
@@lyrica-live This is what I love about Touhou. You're free to interpret it however you want, like a fairy tale or a mythological story. The narrative and characters suit your purposes, not the other way around, and it's brilliant.

I know less than nothing about touhou, but I’ve listened to this about a dozen times. It’s so good
I'll tell you enough to give context for the song:
Koishi Komeiji is a Satori like her sister... Satori Komeiji. Satori are a species of youkai that can read minds and because of this they are hated. Not only does it make a proper conversation borderline impossible, nobody likes to have their secrets exposed. They lived away from everyone, only accompanied by their many pets (who enjoy having their minds read) until Koishi had had enough and closed her Satori eye which had the side effect of closing her conscious mind. She now acts entirely on her subconscious whims, living a borderline emotionless haze of a life.
Due to her lack of a conscious mind she's completely unnoticeable unless she allows it and even then, she's forgotten the moment you take your eyes off her. She got her wish of not being hated, but now can't be loved either. Only children retain some memory of her, to whom she exists as a sort of imaginary friend but even they forget her when they grow up.
I realised that the as cute as a kitten as smart as a crow part is probably referencing Okuu and Orin

Despite it being my favourite by far I still haven't commented on this one unlike so many of the others. It took me a while to warm up to it like it does with a lot of these covers since having vocals on them is a big change. But I just love how you capture the tragic side of Koishi like so little else does.

All in all, of all the amazing tunes that you make me randomly sing to myself (especially when listening to the normal versions of them) Hartmann's Youkai Girl is #1 to the point that you're probably one of the main reasons Koishi's one of my favourites 2hus.

A lot of people talk about how they just want to hug and comfort poor Flandre... but, honestly, between a girl who was locked in the basement because she was just way too dangerous, and two sisters who exiled themselves to hell, only to find that they were not wanted there, either, and so they confined themselves, one in a palace and one within her own heart and mind, just so they could escape the hatred... yeah, I think it's clear who the real ultimate woobies of Touhou are... poor Satori has even lost her dear little sister, and poor Koishi can only form imaginary relationships...

It is nice to Koishi being able to remember and be noticed more thanks to having kept Kokoro mask of hope though it will fade giving time but at least she can even without it be remember as Satori sister.
Though apparently she has some pets(and now a day is able to remember at least she scared someone with miss marry and that a human from the outside world dropped a smartphone since she told Satori about it) which is why she went to the shrine where she fought them either Marisa or Reimu(Because she had heard someone had beaten her sister and her pets and one of Satori pets had been granted power so she went so she could grant her pets power but she ended up regretting a bit that she closed her third eye)

Ahhhhhhhh!! I love this so much! The part that starts at 1:15 especially was my favorite section of the original song, and likewise I adore your part for that segment. The somber, almost reflective tone Koishi takes in a sudden moment of clarity, perfectly befitting that sad-sounding melody.

From reading from the wiki, i think she appears as a "imaginary friend" to a child. When the child grows up they start to forget about koishi. In this song i think koishi tried to stop that from happening (a thought from the lyrics "LOOK STRAIGHT IN MY FACE!")
I’ve always seen her as more sad than creepy, but you take the creepy angle and run with it! Especially the cute voice in contrast to the dark music!

This is so fantastic. The panning of your voice, the multiple references to her surroundings (like orin and okuu) the fact she can no longer read hearts. References to her attacks within roses, as well as that phone ringing. your tempo is great for it and the only thing that threw me off was the pitch of your voice. It was a beautiful and jarring experience and I love it. Probably one of my favorites you've done so far.
Beyond that your editing skills are getting even better for these things its so fun and flavorful now

I can't stop hearing this when listening to the original theme. I constantly feel how heart-touching this song actually is, especially since I've been feeling all these things recently.
Not a lot of places I can hear Touhou songs sung with English lyrics, really love the care put into the wordcraft. I love the Japanese sung versions as well, but when I am playing or listening to instrumental version of Hartmann's Youkai Girl, these are the lyrics I am hearing in my head or singing outloud.

Before Little Princess, this used to be my favorite character theme, and Koishi is one of my top favorite characters if not the favorite. So therefore THIS FUCKING SONG IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING~
I'm definitely satisfied with how you portrayed her here, including the voice which I feel fits her more than the mature voice some people apparently prefer for whatever reason. How do you expect her to have a mature voice if she's an eternal child? She's an imaginary friend that communicates best with children and your own self in childhood, and is still present even in your adulthood. Therefore, she never "matured" like you did which is why you don't communicate with her as much anymore due to the differences in personality you developed over her. For an extremely complex character I personally feel like she's relatively easy for myself to understand her a bit better so I accept nothing but the best portrayals of her in regards to fanon, and you for sure did that beyond expectations~
And the more I listen to it I realize how properly sinister the theme and Koishi are. Ugh she's so amazing. She's sweet, cheerful, bubbly, nice, but at the same time creepy, dark, mysterious, insane... It's like flipping a personality switch WAY more than just once, and it happens instantly and too often to your liking, but just enough to make you stay around her instead of getting the fuck away as far as you can, lol. And you captured all of it perfectly, I can just picture the whole scene conversing with Koishi so easily in my head. Yeah I'm insane, sure, but that makes me understand Koishi better for being so insanely complex~ :P

Screen goes black and white. Koishi has one of her little semi-lucid moments of insight. I also forgot to mention (now that i'm not screaming) I really like the transition between the semi-lucid moment and the last verse there. It's a nice bit of subtext suggesting there was a large passage of time.
Especially since Hartmann's is a REALLY difficult song to... do anything with really. I think you nailed it perfectly.

I found this song a few days ago and I could not stop listening to it, just love the lyrics, it feels great to Koishi, I have respect for those who add lyrics and vocal to existing themes because of the difficulties that this brings and your voice also has potential, keep polishing it and you will improve a lot, you won a new subscriber!

Thank you very much~ ;v; I was worried about people not liking the "weird" sort of sound here. I don't think it's very pretty or elegant, but there was a certain vibe I wanted to capture. That said, I am surprised by some other comments saying that they expected a lower or more mature voice; that's a counter I didn't predict. I did consider switching to a lower voice for that one more serious part, but overall I definitely see Koishi as one of the more childlike and thus higher-pitched characters in the series. So I'm glad you agree!
To answer your question, I have more or less four different levels of pitch editing that I do: no pitch (natural voice), +1 semitone, +2 semitones, and +3 semitones. Depending on the original pitch of the music and how I intone my voice while actually singing, it might sound higher or lower even between different characters with the same level of editing. So yes, this one is the highest, +3 semitones! But several others have also been +3, including Nazrin, Kyouko, Kogasa, Ellen, and Remilia.
Also, both Star _and_ Sunny were pitched +3 in the fairy song, while Luna and Cirno were +2. I can barely tell after the fact myself, and I'm proud of that because I was purposely aiming with my voice to sound more cutesy for Star and more rough for Sunny.
