I make my own gesso too but use baking soda instead which makes it a tiny bit coarse. I also add extra baking soda when I want to make it a bit thicker for using as a texture paste.
Drops of reinker, food coloring, coffee or tea, and similar items can be added in place of plain water to give color to the gesso. Coffee grounds, glitter and other tiny elements can be added to add more interesting texture.
    Thank you for sharing!

      @@shilpidabral4372 Hii Shilpi !
The gesso did not crack and my canvas is perfect after 3 weeks after applying gesso.
You can see it on my story on Instagram -- instagram.com/stories/highlights/18138719449226840/
I made my first few acrylic paintings on already primed canvas stretched around wooden frame that I bought online.
So I had no idea about gesso. But recently when I bought a canvas panel from a shop, it did not look very appealing. And thats when I googled about it and got to know we need to apply a primer/gesso over canvas before painting on . :D
I did not have the time to paint on this canvas.
But after seeing your comment, I recorded a video of the canvas panel and added to my story.
This is such a cost effective method using things that are easily available at home. I totally enjoyed making it.
Good luck with your paintings . 😀

I saw a video that said it can cost as much to make as to buy.. no idea if thats true . Yet. But I also found interesting a video i found that showed both a thin and thick version and what they each are used for. So it seems to me that making it thick would be great especially for storage and if u need thin you can always thin it down later if u need. The same goes for coloring it. Or use your paint/ink/ect with some water or vodka(because vodka evaporates later & is clear as well as non-toxic.. I used in food crafts so that's why i use it else where. Truthfully, clear vanilla is an easy go-to for the same reason) and use it in a mini spray bottle (they come in cheap 3packs at hobby lobby or Michaels) to color your texture after it dries (or before. It produces different results depending on when u apply the color).

Thank you a lot. I’m a spray paint artist(I know how does this apply to spray paint art?). Well I repurpose old canvas and gesso over the canvas. I can’t wait to make white and black gesso.

I am not a painter. I use this gesso in crafts only, not in painting, so I can't give you a definitive answer on that as I haven't ever tried it on a canvas with oil or acrylic, or with spray paint. I generally use it for mixed media on paper and fabric. tfw

    • @shawcraft1
      @shawcraft1  5 лет назад +25

Hey Debby ... I just simply take children's school glue, mix half glue and half water and stir it up ... that's my home made mod podge ... so much cheaper!

A good hack for bottles that smell like Garlic residue, place some vinegar vinegar on the bottle and do not cover, leave it for like a day. The vinegar will evaporate and it won’t smell anymore

See I'm makin junk journals and this video called for 3 different gunky things in a jar. Lol. I need to make them all at home but I dont recall the third thing. It was thick goopy and like a gold color. Mercy all this for one journal cover? Ok found it...its called YES paste. It's like glue in a jar that isnt real wet or whatever . Lol

ty ty, I tried following a couple other recipes...but they were long boring and a tad confusing regards the products they use cos of the country they liv in and the brand names. Your recipe and stuff used was simple, easy and you have saved me $18 (what our cheapest version of gesso is in nz)

Oh wow! Yes, Gesso is not cheap to buy. I'm so glad this recipe was helpful for you. Please test it on your crafts before you dive right in, as it works differently on different kinds of mediums.
