Thank you so very much! I am an aspiring artist with failing eyesight, so it seems foolish of me to spend unneeded dollars on commercial gesso if I can reclaim failed paintings with your recipe! I am also 72 years old. Late to the calling, but truly enthusiastic and having loads of creative fun! Thanks again!
Actually failing eyesight can be turned to an advantage as we all should squint when painting so if you paint what you see don't try and paint what you think you see you will be amazed at what people may say
You can make your own calcium Carbonate with Egg shells from Chicken Eggs. You need a heavy duty blender or food processor. I would purchase one at a second hand store. Just wash and dry the eggs then grind then to a fine powder by pulsing the blender on and off. Just don't do to many egg shells at a time, because it will bind up the machine and burn out the motor. You need to remove and clean the blades each time you do this. You can also make side walk chalk with the ground egg shells. Leaving me to believe you may also be able to use regular children's sidewalk chalk for the Calcium Carbonate. In the US many times you can find Sidewalk Chalk at Flea markets in large Tubs for a dollar or two.
I liked your detailed explanations about many things, for example as to why using distilled water, the difference between paints, and why the other recipes are not stable. I have been looking to find detailed info, and here I found it. Kudos to you. Thank you!
Just recently found you and can't thank you enough for your advice. I use your "recipes" for Gesso and Pouring Medium and they are great. Happy to find a British artist as most are American and their products aren't always easy to find, also expensive. Also the Welsh accent reminds me of my Dad (Not that your'e that old!)
What a joy to finally get some solid info on materials in gesso! I have to restore an old gilded carved jewelry box. I could get any info from museums like the Getty or Asian Art Museum in SF, and the conservators they directed me to, deliberately confused me with high priced products and misleading trails. Now I have it! This was so important, thank you!!
I love your videos. I especially love listening to you talk. Your accent is just wonderful. You could narrate children's stories and do voice overs for animated movies. You really should check into that. Let us know if you do.
Thank you for this great tutorial. I watched a number of different ways before hitting on yours as I need to cover a very large area of MDF for a backdrop and it needs to look like an old crumbling wall. Your video has saved me a huge amount of bother and cuts out using a lot of different shop products. Top marks !
I made some according to this demo and it is fantastic. But I ground up calcium supplements that is past their sell-by date. My goodness, it is pure calcium carbonate with mint flavour!
Clive this a way superior gesso compared with your previous formulations. It requires very little stirring from storage and goes on very smoothly. I respectfully suggest that you withdraw the earlier videos. All the best for Christmas and New Year.
Thanks for making this video. I was wondering if the white paint that you are using is a sealer paint for priming houses ( limelock ) or a blackwhite paint used for finishing. I will be painting with acrylics on my homemade canvases made with linen and I am going to follow your gesso recipe. Could you please give me any suggestions?
For crying out loud - I wish I had of found this video first - it would have answered so many questions I've spent hours trying to find answers on! LOL!
So you use emulsion paint that is made for plaster type finishes on walls and ceilings. Surely using water based paint for wood is the way to go? Harder wearing and many are acrylic based. PVA might not even be needed with this. It will be dearer than emulsion but stronger I’m sure. Not a criticism but a thought to run by you.
Clive i need to learn alot from u i never knew about gesso until tonight I have to test alot of ur Instructions i think i could do alot better with a bit of ur Knowlege👏 Many many blessings to you
Thank you for sharing these tips. If I wanted to make a more absorbent gesso for use with acrylic stains, could I just add either more calcium carbonate or marble dust? I find that commercial absorbent ground is really pricey and want to make my own. Where do you buy calcium carbonate and/or marble dust?
hi! im just starting out with acrylics, but im a construction painter. so here my question: why should you use gesso? acrylics for professional painters in constrution are made out of acryl, pigments and fillers (calcium carbonat) and they cost around 4-5$ per kg. i dont talk about the cheap stuff u find in ur local hardware store, but professional level paint. where is the difference and why cant you use that paint to gesso you piece? thank you in advance :)
Pro contract paints are higher pigmented yes I agree. The gesso is used more as a rough surface for artist acrylic to be able to hold on too it's a process that has been used even for oild. It's more about the paint finish flow and archival properties. If your happy using your method then go for it .. I only show what is proven to work
@@CLIVE5ART thank you for your answer! i didnt meant to say like the construction paint is better or something like that, but when i reread the comment, it sounds like it^^ i was just confused haha
I just got 1kg of the calcium carbonate for just £3.99 off eBay (it was actually advertised at tortoise/reptile food). I have plenty of PVA, the same big tub of emulsion you have, so what a bargain price that much gesso will be, thank you 🙂
Hello! Thank you for making these videos. This is perhaps a silly question, but once dry would a gesso recipe like this create a suitable surface for oil painting? I'm an art student and I've fallen in love with building frames, stretching canvasses, and gessoing surfaces, but commerical acrylic gesso here in the states is ~$25USD/gal, and that adds up when working with larger canvasses.
If I understand you correctly, you don’t recommend using acrylic paint? What if I need black gesso? Just add black paint? Will the other ingredients make it gray? I’m just now learning how to use oil paint to paint the Bob Ross style. Actually, I’m just now learning how to paint, period. So far, I have taken one class a month for the past 3 months. I want to save as much money as possible as I do not have much money to spend on hobbies unfortunately.
You are lovely Clive. Love all your money saving tips. You sure you are not Scottish? Accent is good but maybe give us a singing demo next time to prove your Welshness.
Calcium carbonate, latex paint, pva glue. I have lots of chalk sticks, Elmer's glue...will that work? Also, can I just boil water or use REverse Osmosis water?
Could you use Carbodium (I think that's how you spell it)? It's also called Tripoli rock. The only place in the world it is mined is in my home town. I can get as much as I want free. It's like chalk.
Correct latex paint is used in house paint and it degrades faster that’s why we need to re decorate regular artist paint is polymer resin they can be mixed and used together the true archival properties are unknown
I found a white glue (school glue) that is acid free but the packaging doesn't say PVA. No ingredients at all. Would that be PVA glue? I will contact the store to try and get an answer about ingredients.
Clive, can you omit the white paint if you want clear gesso? isn't plaster of paris calcium carbonate? thanks for video. could you tell us what the grams would be in cup or spoon measurements? love your informative tutorials such as this one.
Ok simply cheaply you can add 4 cups of pva add 1/4 cup water add little at a time you want it like a cream add 1 cup of chalk or plaster it will look milky but will dry clear
For those who don’t know Diatomaceous earth is a naturally occurring sand extracted from the earth. It consists of microscopic skeletons of algae, known as diatoms, that have fossilized over millions of years There are two main types of diatomaceous earth: food grade, which is suitable for consumption, and filter grade, which is toxic to humans but has many industrial uses. So it’s best to stay with what’s been used for 100s of years and works which is chalk
Instead of rabbit skin glue, have you ever used regular pva to size a canvas? I know there is a special pva size but for all us poor people living in areas without art stores and expensive shipping rates. Lol. Great vid will try in the near future.
i have use ur this recipe from calium carbonate caco3 but i have problem..i pressed the strech canvas frm back side cracks occurs...kindly help n reply

In North America calcium carbonate can be purchased in bulk at pottery suppliers. It is used to make different clay. Hope that helps

Most products can be made at home manufacturers want us to buy off them but artists have traditionally made there own
Thank you, Clive. I am brand new to this hobby/craft and I really like your style of sharing what you know!
I’m always happy to share

Have fun and happy Easter

LOVE your videos, I learn so much! tyfs! xoxo from Canada
I appreciate all your tips and tricks. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, talent and experience. Have a beautiful day! 😃 🌈
Thank you 😊
I tried the plaster of Paris once and it did peel off eventually so I’ll try your recommendation thank you!
I made some according to this demo and it is fantastic. But I ground up calcium supplements that is past their sell-by date. My goodness, it is pure calcium carbonate with mint flavour!

Calcium carbonate, white latex paint (Matt), distilled water, glue. Thank you for sharing this!
Thank you!! Just wonder: PVA yellows in time. Won't this gesso turn yellow as well?

Thank you
Thank You for the tips Clive.
Going to try this… my previous concoction was basically a mix of all the things you said you shouldn’t use 🤣
For crying out loud - I wish I had of found this video first - it would have answered so many questions I've spent hours trying to find answers on! LOL!
I mix gesso to about 15 percent grey
Thanks Clive, I've learned a lot from you in a short time.
Thank you very much for this video
,Please can you tell me how grames of calcium carbonte and pva with number you add in this video
Hi. Nice video. I tried with sodium carbonate but I get a very granulated mixture. Any tip? Thanks in advance for you answer!
I love your videos. Would Chalk Paint work as a base, therefore replacing the addition of grit?
Chalk paint water based that is is basically gesso
So you use emulsion paint that is made for plaster type finishes on walls and ceilings. Surely using water based paint for wood is the way to go? Harder wearing and many are acrylic based. Www.clive5art.co.uk I sell it there
This is great! Thank you for sharing! Do you know if stucco mixed with PVA be a stable texture paste to use?

So kind thank you 😊
Please tell me must gesso be wet before you paint or can it be dried
Thank you very much for sharing this video
Thank you for your videos!!!! 👍I made Gesso with plaster of Paris and it got stoney after awhile. How do I avoid Stoney lumps?
It can go lumpy that's why I don't use it but try mixing it to a thin paste before adding to the paint that my help
CLIVE5ART thank you. Here in Canada Calcium Carbonate is expensive. But if I find it at a better price - I’m going to give it a try.
I wonder why that’s is chalk is chalk
very informative...thank you ..

Gesso can be used with oils or acrylic
good morning thanks so much very creative and useful work i will try it and tell you
Thank you 😊
Thank you great info. What about pva drywall primer
Unsure sorry never used it

Use just plain Matt interior house paint and add chalk and pva
Thank you so much.
Thank you!!!!
Thank you😁
Thanks for the info. I enjoy your videos.
Thank you
You are lovely Clive. Love all your money saving tips. You sure you are not Scottish? Accent is good but maybe give us a singing demo next time to prove your Welshness.
I sing like a sheep 😂😂😂
Clive can i paint with latex paints(eggshell) on canvas and sell the work.because these paints last long on walls
They are not so archival but yes you can a lot of artists use them they are not so pigmented I would use them with normal paints that would help more
Thanks, it was helpful!
The plastic cups are cheap but they also can be reused so they don't end up in landfill quite so much 😉
I use biodegradable pots now they look like plastic not sure how they are made tho
Calcium carbonate, latex paint, pva glue.
I have lots of chalk sticks, Elmer's glue...will that work? Also, can I just boil water or use REverse Osmosis water?
Elmer's is PVA . No need to filter your water just boil let cool same thing
Where can we get calcium carbonate?
That paint was gel? So thick?
Is calcium carbonate in the video is same to calcium carbonate like garden lime or limestone powder?
Plaster of Paris has Calcium Carbonate in it, does it not?
Great video! Thank you :)
thank you so much !
Your welcome
From where can i buy chalk ? Can you tell me about website that sell chalk ? thanks
Could you use Carbodium (I think that's how you spell it)? It's also called Tripoli rock. The only place in the world it is mined is in my home town. I can get as much as I want free. It's like chalk.
Thank you soo very much!
I recommend VALSPAR premium Matt emulsion as the pigment and density is far superior to Dulux or crown..👍🏻
I tend to agree with you on this as I have just started to use valspa
CLIVE5ART it really is good. BUT the premium paint (gold pot) is not available in tester pots any more.
Can you i know the grams of chalk, pva glue and water ? Thanks
Thank you 👍🏼😁
I found online that they dont use latex in paint anymore...its all acrylic now
That’s not totally true it is used but I think it’s getting less normally only in house paints these days
I would like to make a 5 liter of this.
What would the percentages be?
Just scale it up
*500 grams = 17.6 ounces*
*100 grams = 3.5 ounces*
*20 grams = .7 ounces*
what if I used baby powder or corn starch instead of CaCO₃ is it gonna be good ?
I don’t recommend talc but it’s does work
surely acrylic paint is polymer/plastic and latex house paint will have latex/ rubber in it?
Correct latex paint is used in house paint and it degrades faster that’s why we need to re decorate regular artist paint is polymer resin they can be mixed and used together the true archival properties are unknown
Calcium carbonate, where can we'r buy it?
can i use raw chalk in as its come out of the ground? i live on the new haven chalk formation uk? so plenty there
Thank u Clive.. Plz share lesson on abstract painting 😃
Not my favourite subject but I’ll look into it for you
Thank you so much 😃😃
Thank you so much! :)
Is this recipe good for denim materials? And are those paint water resistant?
All acrylic is water proof I have no idea about demin
Thank you but please reuse your plastic containers or better still use ceramic. 😊
Can you use crushed calcium tablets?
You could but that whole be very expensive
I'm going with baking powder because I'm new to this. But I wondered about the pills too!
Hi, is this also applicable for oil painting?
Yes
PVA... Stands for... Polyvenylacetate
I found a white glue (school glue) that is acid free but the packaging doesn't say PVA. No ingredients at all. Would that be PVA glue? I will contact the store to try and get an answer about ingredients.
Most school glue and woodworkers glue is PVA
CLIVE5ART thanks!
How would I make clear or coloured gritty gesso like Liquitex or Colourfix primer to prepare my own pastel ground? Love your videos, btw.
Use pva glue and calcium carbonate mix well it will look milky but will dry clear
Can I use oil paint instead
No it a water based product
I have a question please. How can I make the clear gesso I get at any local store more fluid?
Clive, can you omit the white paint if you want clear gesso? isn't plaster of paris calcium carbonate? thanks for video. could you tell us what the grams would be in cup or spoon measurements? love your informative tutorials such as this one.
Ok simply cheaply you can add 4 cups of pva add 1/4 cup water add little at a time you want it like a cream add 1 cup of chalk or plaster it will look milky but will dry clear
Did you get a discount on the paint because it's lumpy?
Lumos don't matter as long as you always stir well before use that counts for all gessos as it settles
🤔 egg shells plus vinegar ... mostly calcium acetate results .....
🤔
Can you use diatomaceous earth in place of calcium carbonate?
For those who don’t know Diatomaceous earth is a naturally occurring sand extracted from the earth.

Pva and water works well
When you're showing a product, please don't shake it around. I wanna read the label. Thx. Oh, love the video too.
👍👍
i have use ur this recipe from calium carbonate caco3 but i have problem..i pressed the strech canvas frm back side cracks occurs...kindly help n reply
I have never had that happen unless your application is to thick on the canvas it should be like paint
The gallons of Dulux paint are VERY PRICY!
Maybe use what is available in your country
I hope you are recycling, sir. Thanks for video nevertheless.
Always
I've just noticed that Alkyd/Acrylics are a thing. Considering it's a "resin-paint," I'm wondering if I could use such a thing instead of an Acrylic/Latex/Waterbase?
Would that be a terrible idea? Hahaha
🤔
