I have had many requests to do a video on how I make my own gesso!! So here it is!! This saves me ALOT of money!! It is really very simple and the ingredients are VERY inexpensive!! This is all you will need:
A clean air tight container
1/4 cup water
1/4 cup white glue (school glue works just fine)
1/2 cup white paint (store brand craft paint, perfect)
1/4 cup baby powder (store brand works just fine)
You can play with the amounts of paint and baby powder to get to what ever consistency works best for you!!

Thank you Leslie. Turned out I had everything on hand and made a batch with cornstarch. Glad I did not spend the money on gesso, it is so expensive for a beginner painter. Cheers!
You're welcome!! Thanks for watching!!
Your better off using corn starch vs baby powder!
New subscriber here. Love your channel. This is the same recipe I use for my home made gesso and I have made it with the black paint and it turns out great. because the glue dries clear it doesn't change the black.
I just made some as well!! I did add a bit of black india ink into the mix and it is awesome!! Thanks for watching!!
Really liked the video!! I'm new to using gesso and texture paste, so this seemed like it was simple enough for this OLD Grandma..LOL. Can't wait to make a batch. Take care...
Great recipe...thanks. Did you know that if you smear vaseline (petroleum jelly) around the rim of your jar, the lid won't stick.
+Pamela Parker I did not know that!! Great idea!! I hate when my lids stick!! Thanks for watching!!!
@Pamela, Oooooooh. Thanks a bunch!:)
Oh, wow. That was easy. Thanks for your share on this easy recipe Leslie
Just watched your tutorial. Thanks for sharing. Off to make me some Gesso. Bless you 🙏😷😘
I did it! I made gesso for next to nothing. It even smells like gesso! I used cornstarch and its perfecto.
Yea!!!! I'm so glad you did it!! Thanks for watching!!!
You just answered my question Kathy. Thank you!
Can you substitue cornstarch for the baby powder? Thank you
@@deborahanne9793 I don't think that will work, or maybe it would. I'd imagine you would need to add double the baby powder amount, since it's alot finer than cornstarch.🤔
Gone to make me some before I ran out of my expensive gesso. I was adventurous and used 3 parts white paint and 1 part med blue, as I do like to start off with a colored background. Used 1/2 the water as I was using craft paints and warmed up water first so it would mix better. Turned out perfect, thank you.
Two birds with one stone
Thank you. >
You're so welcome!! I have tinted my gesso with different colors depending on the need!! I am so glad the tutorial was helpful!! Thank you so much for watching!! Always, Leslie

your recipe is really amazing.thanks...
This is absolutely great. This will save me a little cash. Thank you!!!
Hi! I love your recipe for gesso, it's the easiest by far! I appreciate you taking the time to share, and the video is great. Hugs xxx
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!! Thanks for watching!!!
My pleasure! You have down to earth, informational videos, presented in a way that others fail to match. I'm addicted to RUclips, lol, and no, I don't want rehab... And you are one of few, that doesn't leave me confused! Thanks sweetie!
LOL I too am addicted to RUclips and I will NEVER go to rehab!! Thanks for the awesome feedback!! Always, Leslie
Spackling works great too instead of powder
A little rubber scraper would help get the glue and paint out of the measuring cups.
Just a thought for us Europeans: the mix ratio is 1:1:1:2 with the 2 being white paint. so the actual measurement doesn't matter - not that there's anything wrong with yours, Leslie, just to simplify for simpletons like me...:)
No worries and thanks for watching!! I like to make gesso all different consistencies, so I have found it best to just play until you find what works best for your needs!! Craft on my European friends!!
Yup I live this recipie and add more powder when I want it thicker,
Thank You, Leslie! Very Simple & Budget Minded Walmart or the Dollar store. This Stuff adds Grip & Bite & Adhesion betterment To Top Coats
Thank you for the recipe. I will be trying it for sure!
Hope you enjoy
Hey girl... great video. Just a tip... avoid the washable school glue because it can break down when other medias are applied on top of it. Its a bit different than PVA glue. :)
+Pink Poodle Crafts I did not know that!! I think I have some general purpose glue around here somewhere!! Thanks for the heads up!!
No problem :)
Instead of acrylic we can use any other thing
What type of white glue would you use then? Most white glues are washable. Thankyou
Washable school glue is PVAC based with some additives. They are interchangeable.

Thanks for the recipe and the tips! I am trying this!
Thank you, how sweet of you to share❤️
This is amazing.. I make my gesso the similar way!

How to make Elmer's glue at home"
The same glue that is used in school. I found the recipe online.
Pour 3/4 cup of water in a saucepan over medium heat.
Add 1/4 cup cornstarch, 2 tablespoons light corn syrup and 1 teaspoon white vinegar.
Whisk the ingredients together until they're blended well.
Stir the mixture constantly until it thickens.
Thanks-good to know!
Would tempra paint work instead of acrylic paint for gesso?
Will that grow mold in it because of the corn syrup? Is it something you should make as needed?
Thanks!
Patty Coghlan I’m reading the comments to learn some things myself & thought I’d jump in here. Gesso does not require any paint to work as gesso. The paint is for preference only, as to get the canvas white or black or clear .. or really whatever color you want. Because we never want to paint on a stark white canvas (if we use store bought gesso or made a white paint gesso) we can also paint the color we want as a ‘ground’ onto the canvas immediately after the last coat of gesso is applied. As the last coat of gesso is just painted onto the canvas we add a color to the brush and paint the wet gesso. Yes, wet on wet. It works wonders to not be paint-blinded by white or off-white if we made gesso without adding any paint or even if there’s white/black/clear paint. Imagine being out in the white snow. After a few minutes we become snow- blinded. The same thing happens with a white/off white canvas and our eyes won’t see tones/values properly. So yes, a ‘ground’ is of absolute importance to stop the white blindness.
Hope this helps some & I wish you a lot of Happy painting!!!! ✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️
Thanks for the recipe, so easy to understand
Thanks! Good instructional video!!
Tha k you for a lovely tutorial.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you. Will give gesso a go
Thanks Leslie!
What if you put black dye in the mix? Thanks for the video
Awesome. Thanks for the recipe. So going to make this.
+Darlene Bromberger you are so welcome my friend!! Thanks for watching!!
Loved your video! Thanx for the great recipe!
this video is so clear to follow,,well done, just one thing from my own experience... stick to talc as shown here ,don't use plaster or plaster of paris as the plaster will set hard very quickly !!! that's what plaster does!! i made gesso with it ,by the time i'd done my third canvas the gesso was nearly like concrete... , but i did paint on the boards i used it on in oil paint,,just couldn't store it in a jar because it had turned solid!! that was weeks ago and i've only just realised my mistake,,you gotta laugh tho,,what a shmuk.. just a warning guys ....
+Bob “Bob B” Long Thanks for the heads up, I had not heard of that happening before!! Thanks for watching!!
I just made me some Clear Gesso 5 minutes ago with the Plaster of Paris, Elmer's Glue and water... It came out PERFECTLY! 🤗🤗
Thanks. Just made some, works great.
Thanks for the recipe. How long can I keep the prepared gesso ? is gesso easily washable from hand ?
I just shake it if it separates. Yes it is easily washed from hands
thanks for getting back to me. I don't use powder anymore, but always have corn starch....lol...no babies here.
wease rainey
this works wonderfully. I had to make more, I had 2 little girls over the weekend, and they used ALL my gesso and most of my paints....lol. you wouldn't happen to have a recipe for paint would you? lol
Thank you for this wonderful video. Have two questions, can you substitute the baby powder with all purpose flour and how do you use this gesso to simulate snow? Want to add snow to my ornaments but do not have commercial snow paint or snow powder.
Sorry so late in my reply!! I would make my gesso really thick and then let it air dry. You could also add some white glitter so it would make it appear as though the snow was sparkling!!
Mary Oakes asked me: Can you use homemade glue when making gesso? And that is a very good question. I would say that the homemade glue should not be washable like a school glue because the tackiness of it could reactivate when other mediums are applied.!! If you try this, please share how it turned out for you. Also, for some reason your question did not appear in my comments section, so I copy and pasted your question for you!! It is a good question because so many of us make our own "stuff"!! Thanks for watching!!
@Frederick Jamal instablaster :)
@Frederick Jamal No problem :D
Leslie, I do a lot of glue gun artwork and would like to know if this gesso will allow paint to adhere to the type of glue that glue sticks are made from? Liquitex Gesso works very well, but it is ASTRONOMICALLY EXPENSIVE!!! I need something that will work for glue gun art. If you have time, could you please just shoot me a "yes" or "no." Thank you.
Yes, this will absolutely work with your glue gun art! And yes, it will save you ALOT of money. Liquitex and Golden both make a great gesso, but both are very expensive. Enjoy!!
Thanks for the recipe! Has anyone used baking soda? I think some people have used that before?
Yes!! Some people have used baking soda! thanks for watching
How about adding a few drops of food coloring 2 make colored gesso? Would that work I'm gonna try it lol. Can't wait 2 make some
Great idea! How did it work out?
It works! I did it😉
@@thisdollslifejenna3841 thanks! I'll be trying soon too. Happy Friday!🙏🕯🌏🌸
@@humanitarianharjot402 a very Happy Friday to you as well!!!😏🙃💙
@@thisdollslifejenna3841 🙏🌸
if instead of the white paint, you use black...won't you get black Gesso?
It would be more gray, but if you use marble dust instead of the baby powder it may turn out more black, I would have to experiment!! Thanks for watching
Thank you so much for sharing.
Why not use the water to rinse out the glue? And paint? Makes sense....
good question... thanks for watching
Thanks for sharing!:)
Great! will try this once i get low..this does not go bad I hope.? Thanks
Excellent! Gonna try it:)
Please make Gesso for oil priming too.
Should we use gesso on canvas before acrylic painting or we can start directly ?
I would absolutely use gesso on a canvas before adding acrylic paint! I will gesso a canvas even if it says it has been treated with gesso! Thanks for watching!!
I can add any color?
Yes you can!! I use acrylic paint or liquid acrylic to tint my gesso, just remember that the glue and baby powder is white, so it will lighten up your color, so you may want to adjust until you find the shade that works best for you!! Thanks for watching!!
Thank you so much for this!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!!
Hi Leslie I use white acrylic on my rocks for decoupage. Do you think Gesso is better. Typically I use 3 coats of white acrylic
I think it's a matter of preference! My suggestion would be to make up a batch and see how it works on your project!! Thanks for watching and let me know what you think!!
Can I use this home made Gesso to prime cotton canvas boards which I sell?
yes, many artists do!!
Thanks... I loved
Thanks for watching!!
Thank you!
I heard the powder has to have talc....so I use calcium carbonate instead......
Can cornstarch be used instead of baby powder? Thankyou
Absolutely!! Thanks for watching!!
Every baby powder now sold is pure cornstarch based, they did away with the talc.
@@alessandriaj7265
This is not true. Cheap ones are cornstarch based. I don't think the results are the same. They definately aren't the same if you use the homemade school glue recipe. It is best to use Elmers or white glue and talc. You want to be sure to have a good base for your painting. I would had to see your painting go to junk because you tried to save a few pennies on gesso. Your art isn't worth being ruined by crappy art supplies. There is no price worth taking my art away.
Baby powder no longer has talc in it. Does that matter?
Nope you're good!! My baby powder doesn't have talc in it either!! tfw!!
Thanks for sharing. I damn love it.
Oh, OK, that's sweet :) Thanks
Thanks 😊. Do you make clear also
Yes I do!! I will add that to my must make video list!!! Thanks for watching!!
I would mix it all in a bowl then funnel it into the jar
thanks for the idea!
@@LesliesCreativeStudio those handheld gravy mixers would work good in the jar I think too. Lol
I made some Gesso by mixing White Glue, Chalk Powder and Acrylic Paint...well at first it looked great but somehow it gave kind of clay surface to canvass...painting on it seemed not very smooth. As if the surface was dry and earthy. Perhaps this particular Gesso is only suitable for Acrylic Paints? Please guide; if for oil painting ingredients of Gesso are to be different?
Maybe darken it with charcoal also good texture
Hi! just made your gesso recipe yesterday , yay, but it doesn't cover the print really well on junk mail return envelopes ... I'm guessing I need to add more white acrylic paint?
"Thank YOU""" This is great ;)
You're welcome!! Thanks for watching!!!
Iv made black gesso it works great
Scrapn Life Away - you said you are skeptical about making Black Gesso. - Please View "Clive5art" video's, he explains in his video's how to make all three Gesso's. - Clear, White and Black Gesso. - Basically the same way as you do, except yours is in American Decimal measurements, his is basically in European Metric measurements. - Thanks for the lesson
I dont scrapbook, but I do paint with acrylics and want to slowly move into oils so that I have longer freedom periods with my art pieces....ya know, cuz oil paints dont dry nearly as fast as acrylics.
and in my opinion it blends better for certain things that acrylics just wont. . anyways ..
this vid is very informative and easy to follow!thank you for that!! also as far as the craft paint u use, what about using a thicker type paint like "premier" brand acrylic? its still pretty cheap. maybe like $4.00 or even less at an ac moore store, with their 50%off coupons!! ;) for what a jar that size would need, im just thinkin about your idea of black gesso! it, "premier" is a little glossy when dry but its alot thicker than apple craft paint or those 3 for a $1 walmart craft paints. so idk if that makes a difference.(I know most cheaper craft paints dry matte or just plain flat) thats why I ask ...but hey, that's what emery cloth or real fine grit sandpaper is for I guess. sorry for the length of this..... but thanks again for a smart video!
When making gesso I"ve even used flat latex paint that was left over from when my husband painted the living room!! When in a pinch, my personal opinion is, use whatever is gonna work best for you or what you have on hand at the time!! I don't have an AC Moore anywhere near me :( That is why I grab the cheaper walmart paint just for making my gesso. When I'm working in my journals, I am a huge americana fan or the liquitex basics when I have a michaels coupon!! Have you tried using glazing medium or gel medium to help your acrylics stay open longer?? I've never used oils, but that is on the list of things to try lol!! Have a great night and thanks for watching!! Always, Leslie
Hi I would like to see the ingredients in writing on screen clearly, all together like a recipe, thank you very much for making gesso I would appreciate that.
ingredients are written recipe style in the description below the video. thanks for watching
question, why do you need acrylic paint? what would happen if you left the paint out?
Evelyn Abston you would end up with clear gesso
Try it
Thank you for sharing
HI, to make your black gesso, just add 1/2 cup of black paint instead of the white paint In your recipe 😍 Have a great day 🌺
Thank you very much for reply
You're very welcome!!!
I was told I need Bob Ross liquid clear ,for the painting I’m doing, with gesso oils and Indian yellow.
Apparently linseed would do in a pinch but it yellows. These r all I have for Christmas, and if I have to order the liquid it takes 2 months to arrive. So frustrating. I’m new to oils , I’m using Liquidex but it’s expensive, and no Michaels here .
Hi!! There are subs for linseed oil, you may be able to check for that on google. But, I do not use oils. May I suggest asking artist Pauline Agnew, she is very knowledgeable on this subject. Here is a link to her website, she is good about answering questions! www.paulineagnew.com/
guys can gesso be used to make like candle holders or like a vase or something like that or only for small stuff like some texture on paper
Gesso and textured paint are the same things ??
Thank you for this video, great turn out on my project. Have a question how can i smooth the surface once it dries on Paper Mache Masks? safe for sand paper or wet smoothing with sponge? thank you info would be great before i paint
sorry so late in replying, I don't know why this question didn't get delivered to my inbox? You should not need to sand your gesso, baby powder texture is smooth (like a baby's bottom lol) but you should be ok to paint over paper mache masks just fine with this!! Hope this helps and so sorry in being so late in replying! Always, Leslie
Nice n' easy! Must give this a try! Just a short question for you....is this good to use for color pigments and create acrylic paint?
Hi Christina!! This gesso recipe already has acrylic paint in it (white), but you absolutely can add color pigments to it!! I hope this answers your question and thanks for watching!! Always, Leslie
Thank you Leslie!
I was wondering if you can use corn starch instead of baby powder?
Hi Wease and that is a good question!! I have used it in one batch when I was in a pinch and had no problems with it!! (I have alot of baby powder around because of my grandbabies) Thanks for watching!! Always, Leslie
Nice video. Did you use Talc baby powder, or Cornstarch baby powder?
At timestamp 3:35 you said the paint was "Walmart brand" but the package said PLAID Apple Barrel Colors. Did you misspeak, or did you actually refill the PLAID container with Walmart white wall paint?
Hi Merryscrapper! So sorry in replying so late! I use cornstarch baby powder, and the PLAID Apple Barrel is the cheaper brand of paint available at Walmart! Hope that answers your question! Always, Leslie
thank's a lot
thanks for watching!
Can you use white latex paint for the "White paint"?
Very useful.
Thank you and thanks for watching!!
Love * this Thanks💞🦋
If you use a higher quality paint, your gesso won't have to be applied 3-4 times. That's the only problem I think you'd have with using a cheaper paint...but for art journals, I'm sure it's okay.
Use what you have!!! Thanks for watching!!
Can you use some other powder in place of baby powder? Won't your work smell like baby powder? btw thanks for doing this video!
Does cornstarch work just as well or no? Thank you!
Yup it sure can!! Actually, I would say, anything that you have on hand, that has a bit of "grit" to it can work in a pinch!! But yes, many do use cornstarch!! Thanks for watching!!
Thank you.
You're welcome!! Thanks for watching!!
hope you dont mind me saying , but would it not be better to use something flat to stir your gesso
As long as it is mixed well, it really doesn't matter what you stir it up with! Thanks for watching!
Can corn starch be used in lieu of baby powder?
Is that school glue or glue all? I bought a big container of school glue for pouring and was told I needed glue all. I was told apple white will crack in pouring( and it did). Could just be me🤔
I have always used the most inexpensive ingredients I could find!! I've never had trouble with using school glue, even though I know that some have warned against it. As far as the white craft paint, it may crack if it is old! Just fiddle with it until you get a consistency that works best for you!! Happy crafting and thanks for watching!!
works great ty
You're welcome!! Thanks for watching!!!
Hi Leslie! This may be a silly question, but I'm wondering if I omit the paint, would it dry clear? I'm looking for a smoother clear gesso .. the huge bottle I got on sale is quite gritty! :)
HI there and there are no silly questions!! I do make my own clear gesso and I got the recipe from Stacy over at pink poodle crafts and here is the link to her video where she makes the clear gesso: ruclips.net/video/cRjj3WXthEU/видео.html
Tell her Leslie sent you!!
can I use white spackle instead of using the white Elmer's Glue or flexible clear sealant it's like a calk made by Dap
Hi Casey!! So sorry in taking so long to respond! I had to think on this one as I have not used either product in my gesso making! I would think that you could use the white spackle (you could also use that as a form of texture paste). If you diluted the spackle with water, you could almost use any color of paint to tint it as well. As far as the flexible sealant, I'm not so sure. I would think that it would dry to a slick/smooth surface. With a gesso, you want a bit of "grit" or "tooth" to it, so that what ever mediums you use have something to grab on to, and the calk would not provide that. If you do try using these ingredients, please let me know how they worked for you!! You never know if you don't try!! Thanks for watching!!
Can u use gesso for pastels
Can you use something else other than baby powder???
Can you use this on wood furniture so you don't have to sand it before painting it?
Gesso was originally used to prep a canvas before an artist began their creative process. Most furniture will have some sort of protective varnish on it, that would need to be sanded off. The varnish causes the surface to be non-porous, whereas canvas is a porous surface. You can try, but I would be afraid that whatever you put on top would eventually chip off.
