Old houses actually do make noise without any human interaction. Old houses are typically made of wood and wood shrinks in the cold and swells in the heat. This is why during a really swampy summer you might have trouble getting your closet door shut.
The sounds you hear are typically creaks and pops.
Strong enough wind also puts pressure on old houses and makes them groan and shift.
It's kinda cool.

I mean, the original Evil Dead was more of a horror movie than the rest of the franchise, and it takes place entirely in a small cabin and the surrounding woods.

$5 million. Really easy to make it "20 times its budget" when you don't spend a lot by Hollywood standards.
And it has less attractive CW kids in it.
It's like how "Blair Witch" holds the record for the largest return on investment.
The film got a 10k grant from the gvmt for promoting dental care, which is how they made 10x their budget.
They then spent the proceeds changing their names to avoid all the people who want to kill them for making this crap.
I just finished my Halloween movie binge with this one last night. How it ends gave me real good chills.

I remember, that when I was in Junior High, I read an article by Isaac Asimov, explaining that Ouija Boards were an example of the "ideomotor effect." In simple terms: if you WANT the Ouija to give you an answer starting with "B," then you will start nudging the planchette towards "B," without being consciously aware that you're doing it. An even simpler example is the "Pendulum Oracle" -- you take a wedding ring, or something else with sentimental value, and you tie a thread to it, and the Spirits From The Otherworld will cause the pendulum to move clockwise, or counterclockwise, or back-and-forth at right angles.
So I asked for a Ouija board -- the mass-produced, cardboard-and-plastic Parker Brothers version -- as a Christmas gift, so that I could test out this whole "ideomotor effect." Alas, all of my friends from Jr. High were like: "Oh, if you mess around with a Ouija Board, the devil will drag you soul to Hell."
It was irritating.

that would have been awesome, and they wouldn't have been stuck around the lore of the Ouija game. It could have been just an extra prop instead.

I thought revelations was ass and a disgrace to one of the best horror games of all time (in my opinion) but the first one wasnt bad at all to me.
