DΛDDY I'm not sure if this is 100% correct or not but being Latino I know that in the Caribbean there a lot of voodoo, Santeria, and a couple other types of witch craft and spiritual stuff that people mess with. In Latin America as well, mostly because of the slaves brought over by Europeans from Africa and the natives from around those areas. These things are still practiced over there so a lot of older Latinos especially know about that type of demonic stuff because family members are into that sort of thing.
CiCi Melendez You are correct but I can't say all your details are since I'm not very connected with my culture but anywho from what I've seen of modern American horror movies- it's typically the grandmother, an elderly neighbor, or someone who's first language isn't English that knows about the "evil spirits" and warns the main character. It's a relatively new trope that I'm honestly not too fond of.
It's probably so they can say something 'mystic' in a different language so it seems extra scary or something even though it's stupidly ridiculous. I could probably say "Me encanta los perritos calientes" and tell people it's a supernatural chant and some people would believe me.

DΛDDY true I feel like that's because the older family members are usually more connected to the history of their families and in their time it was more important to know about your family's heritage and history(wether good or not) than it is with the younger generation of today. I guess that's why in these movies the maid is not only Latino but also a little old.

$5 million. Really easy to make it "20 times its budget" when you don't spend a lot by Hollywood standards.
And it has less attractive CW kids in it.
It's like how "Blair Witch" holds the record for the largest return on investment.
The film got a 10k grant from the gvmt for promoting dental care, which is how they made 10x their budget.
They then spent the proceeds changing their names to avoid all the people who want to kill them for making this crap.

Also, the board Debbie found in her attic was clearly a different board than the one they played with as kids. The first one had a plastic planchet, while the one later in the film looks wooden.

Old houses actually do make noise without any human interaction. Old houses are typically made of wood and wood shrinks in the cold and swells in the heat. This is why during a really swampy summer you might have trouble getting your closet door shut.
The sounds you hear are typically creaks and pops.
